Why it stands out
The 2020 Kia Sorento stands out as the last model year of the third generation, and it benefits from the larger, more refined direction Kia had already taken with this SUV. By this point, the Sorento had grown in size and stature, with improved interior quality and more passenger space than before. It also offered a third row, though those seats were still best left to kids. For shoppers who wanted a midsize SUV feel without moving to a newer redesign, the 2020 Sorento remained a practical, familiar choice.
What makes this version especially distinctive is its mix of powertrain choices and everyday usability. The lineup included a 185-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder, a 240-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and a 290-horsepower 3.3-liter V6. The base engine was described as too weak for the larger Sorento, while the turbocharged engine was recommended, and the V6 was the best choice for those who needed the third row. Fuel economy varied by engine, with the base four-cylinder estimated at up to 20/27 mpg city/highway, the turbo version at 21/28 mpg, and the V6 at 18/25 mpg. The 2020 model also brought a light exterior refresh, with updated lights and bumpers, while the EX and SX Limited trims were dropped.
Safety and technology were solid strengths for the 2020 Sorento. It came with standard rear parking sensors and available forward collision and lane-departure warnings, and the model had earned strong crash-test results over its production run. At the same time, the third-row seats were still limited in usefulness, and the turbocharged four-cylinder had already been discontinued by this model year.

This was the perfect car for us! But for a family whose best vehicle was over 16 years old, maybe we were just easy to please. Such a great value though compared to other seemingly overpriced manufacturers.

Great interior and runs really good. We tried several other cars but did not like the fit. This one is very comfortable for us and room to expand! It will last us for years!

How much does the 2020 Kia Sorento cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,762 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,762 |
| Year-Round High | $16,586 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,580 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.96% |
Prices have softened 10.96% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,982 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of used Sorentos to compare.
Is the 2020 Kia Sorento a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Kia Sorento earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. The overview describes it as a practical, familiar midsize SUV with more passenger space than before, improved interior quality, and a third row for added flexibility. It also frames the Sorento as a good fit if you want midsize-SUV utility without moving to a newer redesign. With 33.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Kia Sorento reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The overview also highlights solid safety and technology, standard rear parking sensors, available forward collision and lane-departure warnings, and strong crash-test results over its production run. For used buyers, that combination suggests a vehicle that can make sense for long-term ownership if you verify condition and maintenance history carefully.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Kia Sorento?
At 66.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection to check for prior collision repairs and any signs of uneven wear. Focus especially on body condition, panel alignment, and how well the interior and electronics have held up, since those details can reveal how the SUV was treated.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Kia Sorento?
This looks like a moderate market where you can be selective, especially if you compare condition and pricing carefully.
- Deal availability: 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,982 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.96% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,762, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Kia Sorento's resale value?
The current average of $14,762 sits slightly below last year's $16,580.
That price movement suggests the Sorento has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you keep mileage reasonable and maintain the vehicle well, you may be better positioned when it comes time to sell. The model's broad appeal as a practical three-row SUV should also help support demand.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Kia Sorento or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.96% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $13,635, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $14,762 average.
- It offers a stylish, luxurious feel with strong family-friendly value.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,844, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $14,762 average.
- It adds a redesigned look with more advanced tech and safety.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price and satisfaction, the 2020 is the primary path to consider. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2019 is the better value play, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the newer redesign and can stretch your budget.
