Summary
With 2,912 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,465, 31.9% of 2020 Jeep Compasses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Jeep Compass 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Jeep Compass stands out most clearly for buyers who want a small crossover with real off-road ability. Its appeal is tied to Jeep’s adventurous image, but the practical question is whether that capability matters to you. For shoppers who do not need that kind of trail focus, the Compass is less compelling.
As a daily driver, the 2020 Jeep Compass has some useful strengths. It is comfortable and spacious, and owners often appreciate its affordability of features and its handling, especially in urban settings. At the same time, its performance is fairly pedestrian, and value for money is a weak point. Some owners also mention limited headroom, rear visibility issues, and concerns about certain safety aspects, including the battery’s location.

I got the Trailhawk version of Jeeps Compass lineup. I’m very impressed with the amount of features it came with, in fact, it’s very comparable to my Grand Cherokee High Altitude. Surprisingly, the Compass is peppy and maneuverable and it will do great as an urban 4x4!

How much does the 2020 Jeep Compass cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,467 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,467 |
| Year-Round High | $17,093 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,095 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.52% |
Prices have softened 9.52% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,913 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2020 Jeep Compass a good car?
Generally — the 2020 Jeep Compass earns a 4.33/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its affordability of features, handling, and styling, and they also respond well to its comfortable, spacious cabin. The trade-offs are clear, though: expert testing points to fairly pedestrian performance and weak value for money. For you, that means the Compass makes the most sense if you want a small crossover with Jeep character and useful everyday space, rather than the most polished all-around commuter. Even so, 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market still offers some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Jeep Compass reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a model that feels generally satisfying over time, with buyers repeatedly noting its features, performance, and styling in a positive light. The same feedback also emphasizes that owners can count on its affordability of features and its urban-friendly handling. Expert testing adds that the Compass is a decent tool for regular off-roading, which reinforces its dependability if you plan to use it for more than just pavement driving. Jeep also makes the first scheduled maintenance visit easy to absorb by including it on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the Compass’s strengths are unevenly matched by its refinement, so you should expect a vehicle that can satisfy on capability and features while still asking you to live with some compromises.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Jeep Compass?
At 66.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example or one with optional equipment. Focus on condition details that matter in daily use, including cabin wear, visibility concerns, and how well the vehicle’s features and safety equipment are functioning. If you want the Compass for its capability, make sure the specific example you are looking at actually has the equipment that supports that use case.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk, and the base trim is where you are most likely to miss out on the nicer upgrades that make the Compass feel more appealing. Higher trims add more of the soft-touch materials, premium leather, and sophisticated technology that help offset the model’s cost-cutting feel.
- Powertrain: The 2.4-liter four-cylinder makes 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque, but expert testing describes it as loud, slow, and thirsty. The nine-speed automatic can shift harshly or resist downshifts, so you should pay close attention to how the drivetrain behaves on a test drive.
- Safety package: Jeep’s driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technology is optional, even though it is available on the base Sport trim. When equipped, it includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic warning.
- Infotainment: Available Uconnect brings an 8.4-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and 4G LTE WiFi connectivity. It also supports extra-cost connected services, and the system is generally easy to use.
- Fuel efficiency: Expert testing returned 23.1 mpg, which fell short of the EPA combined rating of 25 mpg.
Which 2020 Jeep Compass trim should I buy?
The 2020 Jeep Compass is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited, Trailhawk.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it makes the Compass accessible if you mainly want the Jeep badge and basic utility. It is the trim where you are most likely to feel the absence of the nicer materials and technology that make higher versions more satisfying.
- Latitude: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it sits in the middle of the lineup and should give you a better balance of equipment and price than the base model. If you want a Compass that feels more complete without chasing luxury-level extras, this is the one to focus on first.
- Limited: This trim is the right choice if you want the more upscale side of the Compass, including the richer interior feel and the kind of available equipment that makes the cabin more pleasant day to day. It is the trim that best matches the model’s comfort-and-tech strengths.
- Trailhawk: Choose this one if you want the Compass for its off-road capability. Expert testing highlights added ground clearance, an Active Drive Low AWD system with a 20:1 crawl ratio, and an exclusive Rock driving mode, making it the most specialized version in the lineup.
Jeep makes its driving-assistance and collision-avoidance technology optional across the lineup, including the base Sport trim, so you should verify whether a specific used example has the safety package you want.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Jeep Compass?
The market looks moderately favorable if you are a selective buyer.
- Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,913 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.52% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,467, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Jeep Compass's resale value?
The current average of $15,467 sits slightly below last year's $17,095.
That decline suggests the Compass has softened in the used market, which can be good news if you are buying now but less encouraging if you are thinking about future trade-in value. A lower current price can help you enter ownership at a more attractive point, but it also means the model has not been holding value as strongly as it did a year ago. If you plan to sell later, the best protection is to buy well, keep the vehicle in strong condition, and avoid overpaying for extras that the market may not reward later.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Jeep Compass safe?
The 2020 Jeep Compass earns Good ratings in all IIHS tests except for headlight performance, and it receives a mix of three-star, four-star, and five-star ratings from NHTSA.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Jeep’s driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technology is available on the base Sport trim, but it is optional and bundled through the Safety and Security Group and the Advanced Safety Group. When equipped, the system includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic warning. Expert testing also notes that adaptive cruise control can overreact in traffic and that lane-keeping assist can be more assertive than you may want.
Should I buy a 2020 Jeep Compass or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.52% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model stands out for its mix of everyday comfort, available off-road capability, and improved tech, while still asking you to accept modest performance and value trade-offs.
The bottom line: If you want a used Compass now, the 2020 model is the better path when you can find a clean example with the equipment you actually want, especially if you value Jeep character and available trail capability. If your priority is simply the lowest possible price, you can also shop carefully and let condition, accident history, and equipment level decide whether a different year offers better value for your budget.
