Summary
With 2,908 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,508, 31.8% of 2020 Jeep Compasses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Jeep Compass 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Jeep Compass stands out most clearly for buyers who want a small crossover with real off-road ability. Its appeal is tied to Jeep’s adventurous image, but the practical question is whether that capability matters to you. For shoppers who do not need that kind of trail focus, the Compass is less compelling.
As a daily driver, the 2020 Jeep Compass has some useful strengths. It is comfortable and spacious, and owners often appreciate its affordability of features and its handling, especially in urban settings. At the same time, its performance is fairly pedestrian, and value for money is a weak point. Some owners also mention limited headroom, rear visibility issues, and concerns about certain safety aspects, including the battery’s location.

I got the Trailhawk version of Jeeps Compass lineup. I’m very impressed with the amount of features it came with, in fact, it’s very comparable to my Grand Cherokee High Altitude. Surprisingly, the Compass is peppy and maneuverable and it will do great as an urban 4x4!

How much does the 2020 Jeep Compass cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,479 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,479 |
| Year-Round High | $17,105 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,106 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.51% |
Prices have softened 9.51% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,908 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable range of choices while shopping.
Is the 2020 Jeep Compass a good car?
Generally — the 2020 Jeep Compass earns a 4.33/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its affordability of features, handling, and styling, and they also describe it as comfortable and spacious. In use, that makes it a practical fit if you want a small crossover that feels easy to live with in the city and offers more personality than a typical commuter SUV.
The trade-offs are clear, though: the expert review calls out fairly pedestrian performance and weak value for money. The overview also frames it as most compelling if you want Jeep’s adventurous image and real off-road ability, while being less convincing if you do not need that trail focus. Even so, 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Jeep Compass reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a model that feels dependable in day-to-day use, with satisfaction centered on its features, performance, and styling. That same feedback also suggests you can count on it for the basics if you choose a well-kept example.
The expert review adds that the Compass’s off-road hardware and available technology are part of its appeal, and the cost-effectiveness section notes that Jeep offers a lot of desirable equipment as optional upgrades. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the most appealing versions can become expensive once they’re loaded up, so condition and equipment level matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Jeep Compass?
At 66.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage or heavily optioned example. Pay close attention to body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment on the car matches the trim and option level you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Compass comes in Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk trims, and the base Sport is where you’re most likely to miss out on the richer feature content that makes higher trims more appealing. The lineup also includes packages and special editions that can change the equipment mix, so you should compare the actual car in front of you rather than relying on the trim name alone.
- Powertrain: The Compass uses a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The expert review says it is loud, slow, and thirsty, with sluggish acceleration and nearly non-existent passing power, so you should judge whether the driving feel matches your expectations.
- Safety package: Jeep’s driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technology is available across the lineup, and the test vehicle included adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic warning. The base Sport can be equipped with this technology, but it is not standard.
- Infotainment: The available Uconnect system uses an 8.4-inch touchscreen and includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and 4G LTE WiFi connectivity. It also supports connected services, and the test vehicle added navigation and a premium audio system.
- Fuel efficiency: The test vehicle averaged 23.1 mpg, and the expert review says that came up short of the EPA combined rating of 25 mpg.
Which 2020 Jeep Compass trim should I buy?
The 2020 Jeep Compass is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Compass nameplate. Just keep in mind that the most appealing comfort, tech, and safety features are more likely to show up on higher trims or as options.
- Latitude: This is the trim to target if you want a better balance of everyday equipment and price. It should give you a more satisfying ownership experience than the base model without pushing you into the most expensive versions.
- Limited: This is the best-value trim if you want the Compass to feel genuinely well equipped. The expert review’s test vehicle was a Limited with AWD and a long list of upgrades, which shows how far this trim can be pushed if you want comfort and tech.
- Trailhawk: Choose this one if off-road ability is the reason you’re shopping the Compass. The expert review highlights its added ground clearance, Active Drive Low AWD system with a 20:1 crawl ratio, and exclusive Rock mode, making it the clear pick for trail use.
Jeep’s driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technology is optional, but it is available even on the base Sport trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Jeep Compass?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards shoppers who compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,908 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.51% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,479, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Jeep Compass's resale value?
The current average of $15,479 sits slightly below last year's $17,106.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can reduce the impact of that depreciation curve.
The key for future resale is choosing a clean, well-equipped example that still feels desirable to the next buyer. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Jeep Compass safe?
The Compass earned Good ratings in all IIHS tests except for headlight performance, and the NHTSA gave it a mix of three-star, four-star, and five-star ratings.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Jeep’s driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technology is available across the lineup, and the test vehicle included adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic warning. Those systems are optional, though, so you should confirm that a used example actually has the safety package you want.
The main caveat is that the expert review says the adaptive cruise control can overreact in traffic and the lane-keeping assist can be more insistent than desired. That means you should test the systems carefully during a drive rather than assuming every equipped Compass will feel equally polished.
Should I buy a 2020 Jeep Compass or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.51% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The expert review says the Compass is especially compelling if you want Jeep’s adventurous image and real off-road ability, but less compelling if you do not need that trail focus.
The bottom line: The 2020 Compass makes the most sense if you want a small crossover with Jeep character, available off-road capability, and a market that currently favors buyers. If your priority is everyday value and you do not care about trail ability, you may want to shop carefully and compare it against other options before committing. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2020 can still work well if you focus on a clean, well-equipped example at the lower end of the market.
