CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Honda Pilot
overall

Summary
With 2,333 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,543.00, 32.3% of 2020 Honda Pilots for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Honda Pilot 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
69.6% of 2020 Pilot models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Honda Pilot is a versatile, comfortable three-row SUV with a strong practical appeal. It offers tons of cargo space, an adult-friendly third row, and an impressive list of standard safety features, which helps explain why it remains attractive to shoppers who want family-friendly utility in a mainstream package. Its powerful engine is another plus, and owners also praise its performance, comfort, fuel efficiency, spacious interior, and responsive handling.
Even so, the Pilot no longer stands out from the competition the way it once did. Honda’s driver controls and in-car tech are its biggest shortcomings, and the interior materials feel cheap. Some owners also note that it is not the best choice for towing and that city fuel consumption can be higher than in other vehicles, so buyers should weigh its strengths in space and comfort against those limitations.

Truly next level, crazy fast and responsive SUV for what it is, did not expect to be so agile and fast. Throttle response and braking are unbelievable again, for something this big. Corners amazing, all while getting great gas mileage. This is the Black Edition, it’s better than anything else in its class, period.

Perfect size SUV. I love everything about it. The hands free options are amazing. The fact that you dont have a key switch, was a little getting use too. Drives smoothly. Great on gas. Very comfortable interior.

Great value with awesome upgrades! Wish it had the right rear view mirror camera like our 2015 Honda Accord. Much better bang for my buck in gas mpg than the other vehicles we considered like the Lexus 460 and Toyota Highlander.

How much does the 2020 Honda Pilot cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,630 |
| Year-Round Low | $22,510.90 |
| Year-Round High | $24,613.87 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,616 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.07% |
Prices have softened 8.07% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,351 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
If you find a listing below $22,510.90, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Honda Pilot a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.7/5, and the expert rating is 8.00/10.
The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its performance, comfort, fuel efficiency, spacious interior, and responsive handling. The Pilot also fits well if you want a family-friendly three-row SUV with strong everyday utility and an adult-friendly third row.
The main trade-offs are its unintuitive technology and cheap-feeling interior materials. The overview also points to a practical, comfort-first setup rather than a standout driving experience, so you should expect usefulness over polish.
With 29.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Honda Pilot reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on its performance, comfort, fuel efficiency, and spacious interior. That kind of feedback suggests you can count on it for family duty and regular commuting.
The expert driving notes also describe a refined, comfortable driving experience built for easy commutes and relaxing road trips, which supports the sense that it is a trouble-free long-term companion for many buyers.
If you’re shopping used, the biggest ownership risk is less about outright mechanical drama and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn hard.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Honda Pilot?
At 70.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the price looks unusually strong. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the cabin and controls show wear that matches the mileage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LX is the most basic version, while the EX adds remote start, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, LED fog lights, Smart Entry, tri-zone climate control, a 10-way power driver’s seat, and heated front seats. The EX-L adds leather upholstery, a power liftgate, a power moonroof, second-row in-door sunshades, and a 4-way power front passenger’s seat. Touring, Elite, and Black Edition bring progressively richer equipment, with the Elite adding a panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, and heated and ventilated front seats.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. LX, EX, and EX-L use a 6-speed automatic, while Touring, Elite, and Black Edition use a 9-speed automatic that should deliver more refined acceleration and better fuel economy.
- Safety package: HondaSensing is standard and includes forward-collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and parking sensors are optional, so you should check whether a used example has them.
- Infotainment: LX gets a 5-inch color LCD screen, while other trims use an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. HD Radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Cabin Control Remote Capability are included on all but the LX.
- Fuel efficiency: The most efficient setup is the FWD 9-speed configuration at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, 23 combined. AWD versions return 19 mpg city, 27 highway, 22 combined, while the 6-speed FWD setup returns 19 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined and the 6-speed AWD setup returns 18 mpg city, 26 highway, 21 combined.
Which 2020 Honda Pilot trim should I buy?
The 2020 Honda Pilot is offered in 6 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, Elite, and Black Edition.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the least expensive way into the Pilot, but it is also the most stripped-down. You get the basics, including the smaller infotainment screen and fewer convenience features, so it makes sense mainly if price matters most.
- EX: This is the best-value trim. It adds remote start, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, LED fog lights, Smart Entry, tri-zone climate control, a power driver’s seat, and heated front seats, giving you the most useful upgrades for the money.
- EX-L: This is the right pick if you want a more upscale family SUV without jumping too far in price. Leather upholstery, a power liftgate, and a moonroof make it feel more complete, and it still stays below the luxury-leaning upper trims.
- Touring: This trim is for you if you want more comfort and convenience features, including larger wheels, roof rails, ambient lighting, an upgraded stereo, navigation, and rear-seat entertainment.
- Elite: This is the most premium mainstream choice, with a panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, and power-folding mirrors.
- Black Edition: This is the style-focused top trim, with blacked-out exterior details and nearly the same equipment as the Elite.
HondaSensing is standard across the lineup, so even lower trims start with a strong safety foundation.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Honda Pilot?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,351 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.07% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $22,510.90, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Honda Pilot's resale value?
The current average of $22,630 sits slightly below last year's $24,616.
That price movement suggests the Pilot has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later.
The current softness also means your entry point matters. A well-priced purchase today gives you more room to preserve value than buying near the top of the range.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Honda Pilot safe?
The Pilot earns a five-star overall crash test rating from NHTSA and a Good rating from IIHS.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
HondaSensing is standard, and it includes forward-collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Front and side-impact airbags, child-seat anchors, Vehicle Stability Assist, and traction control are also standard.
Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and front and rear parking sensors are optional, so you should confirm whether a used example has them if those features matter to you.
Should I buy a 2020 Honda Pilot or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.07% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 adds the Black Edition trim and keeps the Pilot’s strong standard safety equipment.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,531, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $22,630 average.
- It emphasizes interior quality, powertrain, driving dynamics, and simple but useful technology.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the stronger starting point because prices are softer and inventory is broad. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2021 is the better path for buyers who prioritize a more refined overall feel.
