Why it stands out
The 2020 Honda Pilot stands out as a versatile, comfortable three-row SUV with a lot of everyday usefulness. It offers tons of cargo space and an adult-friendly third row, which makes it appealing for families who need real passenger room rather than just occasional extra seating. The Pilot also comes with an impressive list of standard safety features, and its powerful engine is another clear strength.
At the same time, the 2020 Honda Pilot no longer separates itself from rivals the way it once did. Its biggest drawbacks are its unintuitive technology and interior materials that feel cheap, which can make the cabin less satisfying than its practical layout suggests. Even so, owners are very satisfied with its performance, comfort, and fuel efficiency, and many appreciate its spacious interior and responsive handling.

Truly next level, crazy fast and responsive SUV for what it is, did not expect to be so agile and fast. Throttle response and braking are unbelievable again, for something this big. Corners amazing, all while getting great gas mileage. This is the Black Edition, it’s better than anything else in its class, period.

Perfect size SUV. I love everything about it. The hands free options are amazing. The fact that you dont have a key switch, was a little getting use too. Drives smoothly. Great on gas. Very comfortable interior.

Great value with awesome upgrades! Wish it had the right rear view mirror camera like our 2015 Honda Accord. Much better bang for my buck in gas mpg than the other vehicles we considered like the Lexus 460 and Toyota Highlander.

How much does the 2020 Honda Pilot cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,511 |
| Year-Round Low | $22,505 |
| Year-Round High | $24,489 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,485 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.06% |
Prices have softened 8.06% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,510 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2020 Honda Pilot a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Honda Pilot earns a 4.7/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating.
The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its spacious interior, comfortable ride, and responsive handling, and they also value its performance and fuel efficiency. On the practical side, it works well for families that need real third-row space and everyday usefulness rather than occasional extra seating.
The trade-offs are its unintuitive technology and interior materials that feel cheap, which can make the cabin less satisfying than its layout suggests. Even so, the Pilot’s roomy packaging and family-friendly use case keep it appealing if you want a versatile three-row SUV.
Only 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you may need to move quickly on the better examples.
Is the 2020 Honda Pilot reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as dependable in everyday use, with strong satisfaction around performance, comfort, and fuel efficiency. The feedback also points to a vehicle you can count on for spacious family duty and responsive driving manners.
Honda’s V6 powertrain is described as stout and refined for real-world driving, which supports confidence in daily use. The 9-speed automatic in higher trims is also called out for more refined acceleration and better fuel-economy potential.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the vehicle’s condition and maintenance history match its reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Honda Pilot?
At 70.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of the body, interior, and electronics so you can judge whether the vehicle’s condition matches its asking price.
Because this SUV is often bought for family use, focus on signs of wear in the cabin, seat surfaces, and cargo area. You should also pay close attention to how the technology and controls operate, since that’s one of the Pilot’s weaker points.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LX is the most basic version, with 18-inch alloy wheels, remote keyless entry, push-button start, power locks, and power windows. The EX is the recommended starting point because it adds remote start, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, LED fog lights, Smart Entry, tri-zone climate control, a 10-way power driver’s seat, and heated front seats. The EX-L adds leather upholstery, a power liftgate, a power moonroof, second-row in-door sunshades, and a 4-way power front passenger’s seat. Touring, Elite, and Black Edition trims add more luxury and convenience equipment, with the Elite and Black Edition standing out for the most upscale content.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. LX, EX, and EX-L trims use a 6-speed automatic, while Touring, Elite, and Black Edition trims get a 9-speed automatic that is more refined and should help fuel economy. Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive available.
- Safety package: HondaSensing is standard and includes forward-collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Front and side-impact airbags, child-seat anchors, Vehicle Stability Assist, and traction control are also standard. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and parking sensors are optional.
- Infotainment: The LX gets a 5-inch color LCD screen, Bluetooth, a USB port, and a 7-speaker stereo. All other trims use an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. HD Radio, SiriusXM, and Cabin Control Remote Capability are included on all but the LX, while navigation and rear-seat entertainment are optional on EX-L and standard on Touring, Elite, and Black Edition.
- Fuel efficiency: The most efficient setup is the FWD 9-speed configuration at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, 23 combined. AWD with the 9-speed returns 19 mpg city, 27 highway, 22 combined. The 6-speed FWD setup returns 19 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined, while the 6-speed AWD setup returns 18 mpg city, 26 highway, 21 combined.
Which 2020 Honda Pilot trim should I buy?
The 2020 Honda Pilot is offered in 6 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, Elite, and Black Edition.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the least expensive way into the Pilot, but it is also the most stripped-down. You get the core space and safety package, but the smaller 5-inch screen and simpler feature set make it the least appealing choice if you plan to keep the SUV for a while.
- EX: This is the best-value trim. It adds the features most shoppers will actually notice every day, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, remote start, heated front seats, tri-zone climate control, and Smart Entry, making it the sweet spot for comfort and convenience.
- EX-L: This is the right pick if you want a more upscale cabin without jumping too far up the price ladder. Leather upholstery, a power liftgate, and a moonroof make it feel more complete, and it still keeps the Pilot’s practical family focus.
- Touring: This trim is for you if you want more luxury and tech, including the upgraded audio system, navigation, rear-seat entertainment, and a 9-speed automatic. It makes sense if you regularly carry passengers and want a more premium experience.
- Elite: This is the most upscale mainstream choice, with a panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and power-folding mirrors. It suits you if you want the Pilot to feel as close to a luxury SUV as possible.
- Black Edition: This is the style-focused top trim, with blacked-out exterior details and nearly the same content as the Elite. It is the right choice if you want the most distinctive look and are willing to pay for it.
HondaSensing is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up trims to get the core driver-assistance suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Honda Pilot?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough price softness to create opportunities.
- Deal availability: 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,510 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.06% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $22,505, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Honda Pilot's resale value?
The current average of $22,511 sits slightly below last year's $24,485.
That decline suggests the Pilot has become more affordable for used buyers, which can make it easier for future sellers to attract interest if they price it realistically. The current market also shows that well-kept examples still have room to hold value because shoppers continue to want roomy, family-friendly three-row SUVs.
If you own one and keep it in strong condition, the combination of broad usefulness and steady demand should help support resale performance. The biggest factor for your future sale price will be how well the vehicle’s condition and history compare with similar listings.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Honda Pilot safe?
The 2020 Honda Pilot earns a five-star overall crash test rating from NHTSA and a Good rating from IIHS.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
HondaSensing is standard, and it includes forward-collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Standard safety equipment also includes front and side-impact airbags, child-seat anchors, Vehicle Stability Assist, and traction control.
Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and front and rear parking sensors are optional, so you may want to look for a well-equipped example if those features matter to you. The strong crash-test results and standard driver-assistance suite make safety one of the Pilot’s clear strengths.
Should I buy a 2020 Honda Pilot or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.06% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the roomy three-row layout, strong standard safety, and family-friendly usefulness that define the Pilot.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,558, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $22,511 average.
- It emphasizes quality, utility, comfort, and driving enjoyment with simpler, useful technology.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and a broad safety package. If you are willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2021 is the better path for buyers who want to compare against a slightly more expensive alternative.
