How much does the 2017 Honda Pilot cost?

Prices have softened 6.56% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 2,556 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.

Is the 2017 Honda Pilot a good car?

Yes — the 2017 Honda Pilot earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.2/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, and Form and function.

Owners consistently praise its reliability, spaciousness, and tech features, and they also highlight the strong AWD capability and comfortable ride. That lines up well with its family-focused role as a practical midsize crossover for hauling people and cargo. Even with some complaints about fuel economy and transmission behavior, the overall package is well suited to everyday family use. 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2017 Honda Pilot reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback repeatedly points to reliability, and owners describe the Pilot as dependable and a vehicle they can count on over the long term. The expert review also reinforces that theme by noting Honda’s reputation for dependability and expected longevity. Honda’s cost-effectiveness commentary adds that resale values are strong, which supports confidence in long-term ownership. For used buyers, the main risk is less about the brand’s reputation and more about finding a well-kept example with a clean service history.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Honda Pilot?

At 60.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually strong. Focus on signs of prior body damage, uneven panel gaps, and any evidence of repair quality that could affect long-term ownership. It also makes sense to pay close attention to how the transmission behaves on a test drive, since some owners have raised concerns there.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LX is the most stripped-down version, and it lacks the HondaLink infotainment system and the Honda Sensing package. Higher trims add more convenience and tech, while the Elite stands out with standard AWD and the most complete equipment list.
• Powertrain: Every version uses a 280-horsepower 3.5-liter V6. The Touring and Elite add a 9-speed automatic, while the other trims use a 6-speed automatic.
• Safety package: Honda Sensing is the named driver-assistance suite, and it is offered on every trim except the LX. It includes collision-avoidance and driver-assistance technology, but blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are reserved for the Elite.
• Infotainment: HondaLink is standard on every version except the LX. It includes an 8-inch display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HondaLink services, HondaLink Assist, SiriusXM, Pandora, text-messaging support, extra USB ports, and a multi-view reversing camera.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert review cites 22 mpg in combined driving for an AWD Pilot with the 9-speed automatic, and observed fuel economy came in at 21.9 mpg on the test loop.

Which 2017 Honda Pilot trim should I buy?

The 2017 Honda Pilot is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, Elite.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the least expensive way into the Pilot, but it is also the most basic. You give up HondaLink and the Honda Sensing suite, so it makes the most sense only if you want the lowest entry price and can live without the extra tech and driver-assistance features.
• EX: This is the first trim that unlocks Honda Sensing, making it the best-value choice for many shoppers who want the safety tech without jumping too far up the price ladder. It also adds the infotainment system that the LX lacks.
• EX-L: This trim adds leather and is the point where the Pilot starts to feel more upscale and family-friendly. It is a good fit if you want a nicer cabin and available rear-seat entertainment without going all the way to the pricier Touring or Elite.
• Touring: This trim adds the 20-inch wheels, the 9-speed automatic, and more family convenience features. It suits you if you want a more fully equipped Pilot and are willing to pay for the extra comfort and tech.
• Elite: This is the top trim, with standard AWD and the fullest equipment list. It is the right pick if you want the most complete Pilot and value the added safety convenience of blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert.

Honda Sensing is available on every trim except the LX, while blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are limited to the Elite.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Honda Pilot?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,556 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.56% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 60.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,771, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Honda Pilot's resale value?

The current average of $16,771 sits slightly below last year's $17,948.

That decline suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can make it harder for a future seller to command top dollar immediately. Still, the Pilot’s strong owner satisfaction and reputation for dependability help support demand over time. If you keep the vehicle in good condition and maintain it well, it should remain appealing to used shoppers who want a practical family SUV. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Honda Pilot safe?

The 2017 Honda Pilot earns a five-star crash-test rating from the federal government and a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety; with Honda Sensing, that rating improves to a Top Safety Pick+.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Honda Sensing is the named driver-assistance suite, and it is offered on every trim except the LX. The suite covers collision-avoidance and driver-assistance technology, but blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are not available unless you move up to the Elite. The review also notes that Honda’s lane-watch setup is limited to the right side of the vehicle, which is a notable shortcoming compared with a full blind-spot system.

Should I buy a 2017 Honda Pilot or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.56% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert review highlights strong AWD capability, a comfortable ride, and a practical family-hauling focus.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $14,693, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $16,771 average.
• The 2016 blends SUV styling with minivan-like practicality.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market value and a well-liked family SUV, the 2017 is the better starting point. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly alternative and still delivers the Pilot’s core practicality.

How does the 2017 Honda Pilot compare to the 2017 Toyota Highlander?

Our experts score the 2017 Honda Pilot 7.2/10 and the 2017 Toyota Highlander 7.2/10.

The Pilot gives you more power, stronger used-market value, and a larger pool of listings to shop from. The Highlander is slightly more efficient in city driving, but the Pilot’s lower average used price makes it the more affordable choice for many shoppers. If you want the better bargain in a three-row family SUV, the Pilot has the edge; if you care more about a slightly different efficiency profile, the Highlander remains competitive.
