Why it stands out
The 2020 Honda Civic stands out as one of the best small cars you can buy, and its appeal comes from a mix of value, variety, and polish. For its 2020 model year, it brings minor design tweaks, more standard safety and convenience features, and more manual transmissions. It also continues to offer the performance and quality of more expensive cars while keeping the value and longevity expected of a Honda.
Another reason the 2020 Honda Civic remains distinctive is its breadth of choices. It offers multiple body styles and multiple powertrain options, which helps it suit a wide range of buyers. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: outdated technology is listed as a con, and some owners say it could use a bit more power and more USB ports. Even so, it is widely regarded as a reliable, affordable, and enjoyable car to live with.

Car drives really smooth, a great upgrade from my 2010 Kia Forte Koup. Everything in the car works great (was told most Hondas have AC issues but haven't had any issues with mine so far) highly recommend

I love this car. I just hope that future models will have blind spot on both passenger and drivers side. Otherwise, I think the car is near perfection. Great value for all it has to offer. The heated seats are a plus is cold weather.

How much does the 2020 Honda Civic cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,722 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,329 |
| Year-Round High | $19,934 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,933 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.07% |
Prices have softened 6.07% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,636 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable range of choices.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Honda Civic earns a 4.9/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, great fuel economy, and fun driving experience. They also highlight the stylish design, safety advancements, and overall reliable, affordable ownership experience.
The main trade-offs are the outdated technology and the recurring wish for more power and more USB ports. In practical terms, this is a strong fit if you want a polished small car with broad appeal, multiple body styles, and a value-focused ownership experience.
29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a reliable, affordable choice that owners feel good about living with over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes Honda’s value and longevity, which reinforces the Civic’s reputation for dependable ownership.
The Civic’s powertrains are described as smooth and flawless, and the overall package is built to deliver long-term satisfaction. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about mechanical drama and more about finding a well-kept example with the right maintenance history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Honda Civic?
At 55.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. Because the Civic’s appeal depends heavily on its value and polish, condition matters a lot when you compare listings.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Civic comes in three body styles—sedan, coupe, and 4-door hatchback—and the 2020 updates include new wheels, bumpers, and lighting changes on select versions. Base trims are more basic, while higher trims add more premium touches and convenience features.
- Powertrain: The lineup includes a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder with 158 horsepower and a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-4 with 174 horsepower; hatchback Sport and Sport Touring versions make 180 hp. The 1.5-liter engine is preferred for stronger mid-range acceleration and responsiveness.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing includes forward collision warning, emergency forward braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. It is standard on Si models and other Civic trims, while the Type R was not tested.
- Infotainment: A 7-inch touchscreen is standard on all models except the base LX, and it includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Top-end trims add Garmin-based navigation, and the system remains dated and more complex than newer Honda setups.
- Fuel efficiency: The Si is rated at 26 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined, while the base LX sedan is rated at 25 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined. Most CVT-equipped Civic models reach at least 30 mpg city and as high as 42 mpg highway.
Which 2020 Honda Civic trim should I buy?
The 2020 Honda Civic is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, Sport, and EX.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, and it makes the Civic’s value proposition accessible if you want the lowest starting price and don’t need the extra equipment found higher up.
- Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more style and equipment while keeping the Civic’s core affordability and broad appeal.
- EX: Choose this if you want the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine and a more upscale everyday experience.
Honda Sensing is standard on Si models and now appears across the Civic lineup, which is a useful safety note when you compare trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Honda Civic?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,636 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.07% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,329, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Honda Civic's resale value?
The current average of $18,722 sits slightly below last year's $19,933.
That price movement suggests the Civic has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. A lower entry cost today can make it easier to preserve value later, especially if you choose a well-equipped trim and keep the car in strong condition.
Because demand remains supported by the Civic’s reputation and broad appeal, a clean, well-maintained example should still attract buyers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic safe?
The 2020 Honda Civic earns the Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, except for four stars in the passenger frontal crash rating on the coupe.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing includes forward collision warning, emergency forward braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. Honda also improved the optional LED headlights, which helped secure the IIHS recognition for all body styles except the Type R, which was not tested.
The main caveat is the coupe’s four-star passenger frontal crash rating from NHTSA. That makes it worth checking the exact body style and equipment on any used listing you consider.
Should I buy a 2020 Honda Civic or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.07% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Minor design tweaks, more standard safety and convenience features, and more manual transmissions are the standout changes for this year.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $17,343, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $18,722 average.
- It offers a polished, value-focused driving experience with broad body-style and powertrain variety.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,353, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $18,722 average.
- It is the outgoing generation and remains appealing for its style, versatility, and engaging driving character.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and feature content, the 2020 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 can save you money, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the later-year version of this generation and are willing to pay more.
