Why it stands out
The 2020 Genesis G80 stands out as the last version of the first-generation sedan, and it still offered the core qualities that made the model appealing in the first place: strong value, generous equipment, and a comfortable, quiet driving experience. It came with either a 3.8-liter V6 or a 5.0-liter V8, and the V6 could be paired with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive while the V8 was rear-wheel drive only. An eight-speed automatic handled shifting duties, and the car’s all-wheel-drive system actively shifted power between the front and rear axles.
What made the G80 especially distinctive was how much safety and convenience equipment it included. Standard features included automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitors, lane-keep assist, high-beam assist, and a rear-view camera. It also earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS every year it was produced and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA. At the same time, the 2020 model still had the same interior shortcomings noted in testing, with switchgear that felt too much like Hyundai’s, and its fuel economy was not as good as some rivals. Even so, the cabin and suspension emphasized comfort, and that balance of refinement, equipment, and price is what made the 2020 G80 a compelling luxury sedan.
