What should I look for when buying a used 2020 GMC Sierra 1500?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 76% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a vehicle history report on any truck you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the engine, transmission, suspension, and any signs of hard use. Focus on condition details that matter in a pickup, including wear from towing, hauling, off-road use, and whether the truck’s equipment matches how you plan to use it.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Base truck comes with a V6 engine, a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, and LED headlights, while the SLE adds an extra USB port, a WiFi hotspot, an 8-inch touchscreen, and remote keyless entry. The Elevation adds body-color exterior details, 20-inch wheels, heated front seats, remote engine start, and a heated steering wheel, while the SLT adds many of those comforts with more chrome styling. The AT4 is the off-road-oriented version with all-terrain tires and red tow hooks, and the Denali adds chrome accents, 22-inch wheels, a head-up display, navigation, and wireless device charging.
• Powertrain: You get five engines to choose from, including a 4.3-liter V6, a 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, a Duramax 3.0-liter turbodiesel 6-cylinder, a 5.3-liter V8, and a 6.2-liter V8. The lineup gives you a wide spread of power and efficiency, and the 10-speed automatic is paired with rear-wheel drive or available 4WD.
• Safety package: Standard safety features include a reversing camera, traction control, and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, a surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and the rear camera mirror.
• Infotainment: The Base truck gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while the SLE moves up to an 8-inch touchscreen. The system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and a sensible menu layout with tactile controls; wireless charging appears on higher trims.
• Fuel efficiency: The AT4 returns 15 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined. The most efficient version is the turbodiesel with rear-wheel drive at 23/30/26, the 2.7-liter turbo returns 20/23/21, and the most efficient V8 is the 5.3-liter with rear-wheel drive at 17/24/20.

Which 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, SLE, Elevation, SLT, Denali, and AT4.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the entry point, and it already gives you a V6, a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, a USB port, and LED headlights. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the Sierra, but it is the most stripped-down version.
• SLE: This trim adds an extra USB port, a WiFi hotspot, an 8-inch touchscreen, and remote keyless entry, plus access to more option packages. It’s the best-value choice if you want a more complete daily driver without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• Elevation: This one adds body-color bumpers, door handles, and grille surround, along with 20-inch wheels and black accents. Inside, you get heated front seats, remote engine start, and a heated steering wheel, so it suits you if you want a more distinctive look and more comfort features.
• SLT: This trim keeps many of the Elevation’s comfort features but wraps them in more classic chrome styling. It’s the right pick if you want a more road-friendly setup, and it’s the trim CarGurus recommends.
• Denali: This is the luxury-focused version, with plenty of chrome, 22-inch wheels, a head-up display, navigation, and wireless device charging. Choose it if you want the most upscale Sierra experience.
• AT4: This is the off-road-oriented trim, with all-terrain tires, red tow hooks, beefed-up skid plates, upgraded suspension components, hill-descent control, knobby off-road tires, and Rancho off-road shocks. It’s the best fit if you want trail capability and don’t mind a rougher ride on pavement.

The safety package is strongest on higher trims, where more advanced driver-assistance features become available.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 GMC Sierra 1500?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 6,788 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.17% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 76.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $32,965, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?

The current average of $32,965 sits slightly below last year's $35,897.

That price movement suggests the Sierra has become more accessible for buyers, which can make it a tougher market for sellers trying to hold top-dollar pricing. If you plan to sell later, the current softness means you may need to price competitively to stand out.

On the other hand, the Sierra’s broad appeal, strong utility, and comfort-focused reputation help support demand. Trucks with a good mix of capability and owner satisfaction tend to stay relevant with used shoppers, especially when they’re configured well and maintained properly.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.28/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?

The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include a reversing camera, traction control, and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, a surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and the rear camera mirror.

The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you need to move up the trim ladder or find the right option package to get the fuller suite of driver aids.

Should I buy a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 76% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.17% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.28/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It blends SUV-like comfort with truck utility and offers multiple powertrain choices.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $30,919, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $32,965 average.
• It was completely redesigned and feels thoroughly updated.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $34,534, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $32,965 average.
• It adds unique features like an optional carbon-fiber composite cargo bed.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, comfort, and capability, the 2020 is the sensible target. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 can save you money while still delivering the redesigned Sierra experience. If you want to spend more for a newer configuration and specific features, the 2021 is worth a look.
