Why it stands out
The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 stands out because it reflects how far pickup trucks have come. Rather than feeling like a bare-bones work vehicle, it offers many of the creature comforts buyers now expect from SUVs and crossovers, while still keeping the utility-minded features that make modern trucks more useful. The AT4 trim in particular is described as comfortable and capable, which gives it a broader appeal than a truck focused only on job-site duty.
It also has practical strengths that matter to shoppers comparing full-size pickups. The available powertrain choices are a plus, and the truck’s technology is noted for being easy to use. At the same time, it is not presented as perfect: advanced safety features are not standard, so buyers who want the most comprehensive driver-assistance equipment may need to look carefully at how it is equipped. Overall, the 2020 Sierra 1500 is distinctive for blending everyday comfort, capability, and modern truck convenience in a way that suits both commuting and work.

Absolutely stunning vehicle. Pure luxury pick-up truck. Serious power, w/a 6.2L V8 engine; smooth, wonderful ride, lots of driver convenience & safety features; comfortable seating, roomy cab interior....I could go on. GMC has left nothing out of their Sierra Denali line. Beautiful truck - everyone Ive talked to feels the same. Commanding presence on the road. Tops Dodge Ram & Ford models, in my opinion. I have a 2020 model. The 2023 model tops even THAT!!!

Generally — the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 earns a 4.28/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, advanced technology, strong performance, smooth ride, and the range of available options. That lines up with the truck’s use-case appeal: it blends everyday comfort with real pickup utility, so you can use it for commuting, family duty, and work.
The trade-offs are that advanced safety features are not standard, and the ride can feel rougher in more capable setups. Even so, the market shows 27.3% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.28/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a truck that many people find dependable in daily use, with praise for strong performance, a spacious cabin, and a smooth ride. The review summary also highlights value and the variety of configurations, which usually matters when you want a truck you can count on over time.
The expert drive notes reinforce that impression by emphasizing straightforward controls and a simple, easy-to-use setup. It also mentions that the truck is built around practical utility, which supports the idea that it is designed for long-term ownership rather than novelty.
At the same time, some owners reported engine-related frustrations, including oil burning and recalls, so a careful used purchase should focus on service history and mechanical condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 GMC Sierra 1500?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any truck you’re considering, because accident-free status is only a starting point. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has higher mileage, towing use, or signs of heavy wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the equipment matches how you plan to use the truck.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Base trim comes with a V6 engine, a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, and LED “light blade” headlights. Higher trims add more comfort and convenience, with the Elevation bringing heated front seats, remote engine start, and a heated steering wheel, while the AT4 adds an upscale, rugged feel with black leather, brown accents, all-terrain tires, and red tow hooks.
- Powertrain: You get five engine choices, including a 4.3-liter V6, a 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, a Duramax 3.0-liter turbodiesel, a 5.3-liter V8, and a 6.2-liter V8. Efficiency varies widely, with the turbodiesel delivering the best fuel economy and the 6.2-liter V8 delivering the strongest acceleration.
- Safety package: The truck includes a reversing camera, traction control, and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags. Available driver assistance features include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and rear cross-traffic alert. The AT4 test truck also had a surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and the rear camera mirror.
- Infotainment: The Base trim has a 7-inch touchscreen, while the SLE upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen. The system is described as easy to use, with clear graphics, large icons, tactile controls, and wireless charging available on higher trims.
- Fuel efficiency: The AT4 returns 15 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined. The most efficient version is the Duramax turbodiesel with rear-wheel drive at 23/30/26, while the 2.7-liter turbo returns 20/23/21 and the most efficient V8 returns 17/24/20.
Which 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?
The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, SLE, Elevation, SLT, Denali, and AT4.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point, and it already gives you a V6 engine, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a 7-inch touchscreen. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the Sierra lineup and can live without the extra comfort and convenience features found higher up.
- SLE: This trim adds an 8-inch touchscreen, an extra USB port, a WiFi hotspot, and remote keyless entry, plus access to more option packages. It’s the best-value choice if you want a more complete daily-driver setup without jumping too far in price.
- Elevation: This one leans into style and comfort with body-color exterior details, 20-inch wheels, black accents, heated front seats, remote engine start, and a heated steering wheel. It suits you if you want a more distinctive look and a nicer cabin without going all the way to luxury-trim pricing.
- SLT: This trim keeps many of the Elevation’s comfort features but adds a more classic, chrome-heavy look and a more road-friendly setup. It’s the trim to target if you want a well-equipped truck that feels more balanced for everyday driving.
- Denali: The Denali brings the luxury angle with 22-inch wheels, a head-up display, navigation, and wireless device charging. It’s the right pick if you want the most upscale Sierra experience.
- AT4: The AT4 is the off-road-oriented version, with all-terrain tires, red tow hooks, skid plates, upgraded suspension components, hill-descent control, and Rancho off-road shocks. It’s the best fit if you want a truck that can handle trail use while still feeling premium inside.
The safety package is not standard across the lineup, so check carefully that the trim you’re considering has the driver-assistance features you want.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 GMC Sierra 1500?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 27.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,345 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.49% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 76.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $33,610.99, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?
The current average of $33,608 sits slightly below last year's $36,726.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more carefully now but may also mean slower appreciation if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the softer pricing trend means you should pay close attention to trim, condition, and equipment, because well-kept trucks tend to hold buyer interest better than average examples.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.28/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include a reversing camera, traction control, and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and rear cross-traffic alert. The AT4 test truck also came with a surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and the rear camera mirror.
The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you need to check equipment carefully on any used example. That makes trim and option content especially important if safety tech is a priority for you.
Should I buy a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 27.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.49% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.28/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It blends everyday comfort, capability, and easy-to-use technology.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $31,602, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $33,608 average.
- It offers a redesigned, more capable, more useful full-size pickup.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $35,389, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $33,608 average.
- It adds unique features like an optional carbon-fiber composite cargo bed.
The bottom line: The 2020 is the sweet spot if you want a modern Sierra with strong owner satisfaction, broad trim choice, and a softer market price than newer examples. If your priority is saving money, the 2019 is the better value play; if you want newer features and don’t mind paying more, the 2021 is worth a look.
