CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Ford Ranger
overall

Summary
With 199 currently listed for sale near Plano, TX and an average price of $23,397, 22.6% of 2020 Ford Rangers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Ford Ranger 4.79 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
95.5% of 2020 Ranger models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Ford Ranger stands out as a midsize pickup that blends capability with technology. It has decent fuel economy for a pickup truck, and it brings towing and hauling ability for tasks like pulling a boat trailer or carrying a truckload of home improvement gear. The truck also has a stylish design and a powerful engine, which help give it a more appealing personality than a purely utilitarian work truck.
At the same time, the Ranger is not without compromises. Its cabin comfort and everyday driving dynamics fall short, and the interior materials feel cheap. Advanced safety features are not standard, which may matter to buyers looking for a more complete package. Even so, the 2020 Ford Ranger can still be attractive to shoppers who want a capable, well-equipped midsize truck with strong utility and a good value reputation.

The truck is extremely comfortable and stable on the road. Amenities are more than adequate and the quality exceeds expectations. Power is more than sufficient and although I was concerned about the 10 speed transmission, it operates flawlessly. Very pleased with this truck.

I had a Lariat. It was comfortable for me but not for people over 6 feet tall..It had every feature I wanted except Fords trailer backing system. It was a good value compared to the 150. It handled my 7200 pound boat and trailer on Tennessees hilly roads easily. Unfortunately I crashed it and it was totaled. It protected me in the cabin without serious injuries. I plan to replace it with a 2024 Ranger.

Is the 2020 Ford Ranger a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Ford Ranger earns a 4.79/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.
Drivers consistently praise its great value, enjoyable driving experience, comfortable ride, sufficient power, and high-quality features. The Ranger’s capability also fits well with its use case as a midsize pickup for towing, hauling, and weekend utility. On the downside, the expert review notes that cabin comfort and everyday driving dynamics fall short, and the interior materials feel cheap.

The expert review also describes it as a balanced truck that delivers where it counts, with capability and tech that avoid headaches in day-to-day use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Ranger?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any truck you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the transmission, cabin wear, and any signs of hard use, especially if the truck was used for towing or off-road driving. Focus on condition and equipment level, since the Ranger’s trim and option mix can change the ownership experience a lot.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base XL is sparse, with vinyl floors, manual air conditioning, cloth upholstery, and manually adjustable front seats. The XLT adds more everyday convenience and is the best-value choice for most shoppers, while the Lariat brings a more upscale cabin with leather upholstery, heated power seats, and ambient lighting.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, paired with a ten-speed automatic. It’s punchy at low speeds and strong for passing, while 4WD is available if you want more traction.
- Safety package: Ford CoPilot 360 adds lane-departure warning and avoidance, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse parking sensors. Forward parking sensors and adaptive cruise control are available with the Technology Package.
- Infotainment: The XLT’s 8-inch touchscreen with SYNC 3 is the key upgrade, and it includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. FordPass Connect is available on the XL, but its remote features and hotspot service are subscription-based.
- Fuel efficiency: Rear-wheel drive returns 21 mpg city, 26 highway, 23 combined, while 4WD returns 22 mpg city, 24 highway, 22 combined.
Which 2020 Ford Ranger trim should I buy?
The 2020 Ford Ranger is offered in 3 trim levels: XL, XLT, and Lariat.
Here's the short version:
- XL: This is the most affordable way into the Ranger, but it’s very basic inside. You get the core truck hardware and useful connectivity, yet the cabin is stripped down enough that most shoppers will want to move up.
- XLT: This is the best-value trim. It adds the features that make the Ranger easier to live with every day, including the 8-inch touchscreen, SYNC 3, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, and Ford CoPilot 360.
- Lariat: Choose this if you want the most upscale Ranger experience. It adds leather upholstery, heated power front seats, LED bed lighting, power-folding mirrors, push-button start, and a premium sound system.
Ford CoPilot 360 is standard on the XLT and helps fill in the Ranger’s safety-feature gaps.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford Ranger?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to reward careful shopping.
- Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,498 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.88% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 76.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,767, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Ford Ranger's resale value?
The current average of $24,671 sits slightly below last year's $26,494.
That price movement suggests the Ranger has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right number. A softer market today can be good for you as a buyer, but it also means your eventual resale will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim choice. Well-kept trucks with desirable equipment should remain easier to move than stripped or heavily used examples.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.79/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Ford Ranger safe?
The Ranger earns Good scores in most IIHS crash tests, though it only earned Average in the passenger-side small-overlap test. It earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in most crash tests, four-star ratings in front passenger side testing, and three-star ratings in rollover crash testing.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Ranger comes standard with automatic headlights, automatic emergency braking, forward collision avoidance, pedestrian detection, a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, a child-seat anchoring system, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Ford CoPilot 360 adds lane-departure warning and avoidance, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse parking sensors. Forward parking sensors and adaptive cruise control are available with the Technology Package.
The passenger-side small-overlap result and the three-star rollover rating are the main caveats to keep in mind if safety is a top priority.
Should I buy a 2020 Ford Ranger or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.88% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.79/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It balances towing, hauling, and tech with a strong value reputation.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $22,860, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $24,671 average.
- It emphasizes price and power with a simple single-engine setup.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $26,346, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $24,671 average.
- It adds a more serious off-road identity with the Tremor package.
The bottom line: The 2020 is the sweet spot if you want a capable Ranger with strong value and broad appeal. If price is your top priority, the 2019 is the cheaper path; if you want a more off-road-focused setup, the 2021 is worth a look.
