Is the 2020 Ford Ranger a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Ford Ranger earns a 4.79/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.

Drivers consistently praise its great value, enjoyable driving experience, comfortable ride, sufficient power, and high-quality features. That lines up with the Ranger’s use case as a capable midsize pickup that can handle towing, hauling, and everyday driving without feeling purely utilitarian.

The trade-offs are worth keeping in mind: the cabin comfort and interior materials fall short, and the truck can feel pricey compared with some rivals. Even so, it remains appealing if you want a well-equipped midsize truck with strong utility and a good value reputation. Good and great deals account for 30.9% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

That kind of response suggests you can count on it for regular use, especially if you want a midsize pickup that balances capability with everyday livability.

The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Ranger delivers where it counts, with strong towing and hauling ability and tech that avoids headaches when you use it. If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the truck has been maintained well and hasn’t been affected by the transmission recall.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Ranger?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any truck you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the transmission, brakes, tires, and suspension, and pay close attention to cabin wear and overall condition since the interior materials are a known weak point.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The XL is the most basic version, with steel wheels, vinyl floors, manual air conditioning, cloth upholstery, and manually adjustable front seats. The XLT adds more everyday convenience and is the best-value choice for most shoppers, while the Lariat brings leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, push-button start, and ambient cabin lighting.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, paired with a ten-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive is available.
• Safety package: Ford CoPilot 360 adds lane-departure warning and avoidance, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse parking sensors. Forward parking sensors and adaptive cruise control are available with the Technology Package.
• Infotainment: The XL keeps things basic with an AM/FM stereo, four speakers, Bluetooth, and a USB port. The XLT upgrades to SYNC 3 with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and available voice-activated navigation. The Lariat adds a premium B&O sound system with ten speakers.
• Fuel efficiency: Rear-wheel drive returns 21 mpg city, 26 highway, 23 combined, while four-wheel drive returns 22 mpg city, 24 highway, 22 combined.

Which 2020 Ford Ranger trim should I buy?

The 2020 Ford Ranger is offered in 3 trim levels: XL, XLT, and Lariat.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the entry point, and it keeps costs down with the most basic equipment. It makes sense if you want the Ranger’s core capability and don’t mind a stripped-down cabin, but it’s the least appealing choice for most used buyers.
• XLT: This is the best-value trim. It adds 17-inch aluminum wheels, body-color bumpers, remote keyless entry, a remote locking tailgate, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, SYNC 3, and Ford CoPilot 360, making it the sweet spot for comfort, tech, and safety.
• Lariat: This is the upscale choice, with 18-inch machined aluminum wheels, a chrome-accented grille, LED bed lighting, power-folding mirrors, leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, push-button start, ambient lighting, and the B&O audio system. It suits you if you want the most polished Ranger experience.

Ford CoPilot 360 is standard on the XLT and adds a meaningful safety upgrade over the XL.

• Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,502 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.99% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 76.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $23,760, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Ford Ranger's resale value?

The current average of $24,317 sits slightly below last year's $26,429.

That price movement suggests the Ranger has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help you if you buy now and hold the truck for a few years. If market conditions stay steady, a used Ranger purchased near the current average should have less downside risk than one bought when prices were higher.

For a future seller, the key is to buy a clean example with strong equipment and a solid history, because those trucks tend to stay easier to move. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.79/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Ford Ranger safe?

The Ranger earns Good scores in most IIHS crash tests, and it earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in most crash tests, four-star ratings in front passenger side testing, and three-star ratings in rollover crash testing.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, a child-seat anchoring system, a tire-pressure monitoring system, automatic headlights, automatic emergency braking, forward collision avoidance, and pedestrian detection. Ford CoPilot 360 adds lane-departure warning and avoidance, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse parking sensors, while forward parking sensors and adaptive cruise control are available with the Technology Package.

The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard across the lineup, so you’ll want to confirm exactly which driver-assistance features are on the truck you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2020 Ford Ranger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.99% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.79/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 Ranger balances capability, tech, and value while keeping towing and hauling front and center.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $22,524, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $24,317 average.
• It offers a simpler, price-focused return of the Ranger nameplate.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $26,198, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $24,317 average.
• It adds the Tremor package for more serious off-road capability.

The bottom line: You should start with the 2020 if you want the best balance of price, equipment, and broad appeal. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 is the value play, while the 2021 makes more sense if you specifically want the newer off-road-focused upgrades.
