CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Ford Escape
overall

Summary
With 3,477 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,523.00, 30.0% of 2020 Ford Escapes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Ford Escape 4.42 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
75.8% of 2020 Escape models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Ford Escape stands out as a small SUV that aims to deliver more than the basics. Ford describes it as raising the bar for the segment with impressive tech, performance, and cabin quality, and the available test-drive notes reinforce that it is meant to feel stylish and modern rather than merely practical. It also offers multiple powertrain options and standard advanced safety features, which gives it broad appeal for shoppers who want flexibility along with a strong equipment list.
That said, the 2020 Ford Escape is not without compromises. The main drawback called out in the test-drive data is that it does not offer much cargo space, so buyers who prioritize maximum utility may want to pay close attention to that limitation. Even so, its combination of design, technology, and safety content makes it a compelling choice for shoppers looking for a well-rounded compact SUV.

This model has all the safety features I’ve been looking for to drive safe and confident on the road! It’s also SO good on gas. The main reason I knew this was the one, was because it has all of this AND it was within my budget!!!

I love my new Ford Escape. It drives smoothly and the engine has zip. It is fully loaded and for a decent price. I also liked the Mazda CX-5, but I thought the Escape was a better value. Better engine and more features for a better price.

Is the 2020 Ford Escape a good car?
Generally — the 2020 Ford Escape earns a 4.42/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth driving experience, numerous features, and safety technology, and many also like its acceleration and comfort. The overview points to a compact SUV that blends multiple powertrain options with a strong equipment list, which helps it fit shoppers who want flexibility as well as a modern feel. The main trade-offs are limited cargo space and some complaints about space for taller occupants, plus a noisy engine under acceleration.
With 31.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a compelling price if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Ford Escape reliable?
Owners rate it 4.42/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle that many drivers find smooth, feature-rich, and safety-focused, with language that supports a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience. The expert notes also emphasize that the Escape delivers a level of quality that elevates it above a basic commuter SUV, which reinforces the sense that it is built to be a confident daily driver. Ford also includes a broad safety suite as standard, which can help reduce stress in everyday use.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that condition and maintenance history matter more than the badge, so you should verify how the vehicle was treated before you buy.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Escape?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can catch wear items, accident repairs, or signs of poor maintenance before they become your problem. Focus especially on cabin condition, cargo-area usability, and whether the vehicle’s equipment matches the trim you expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S comes with 17-inch steel wheels with plastic covers, a 4.2-inch instrument-panel screen, manually adjustable front seats, and a 4.2-inch center screen, while the SE adds 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, automatic climate control, heated front seats, a 10-way power driver’s seat, and an 8-inch Sync 3 system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Powertrain: The Escape offers four engine options, including a 180-horsepower 3-cylinder, a 250-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder, a 198-horsepower hybrid setup, and a plug-in hybrid variant; the conventional engines use an 8-speed automatic, while the hybrids use a CVT.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver drowsiness monitor.
- Infotainment: The base trim uses a 4.2-inch screen, while the SE upgrades to an 8-inch Sync 3 system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; the system also supports over-the-air updates.
- Fuel efficiency: The non-Sport hybrid returns 44 mpg city, 37 highway, and 41 combined; the SE Sport returns 43/37/40; the 1.5-liter turbo returns 27/33/30 combined, or 26/31/26 with AWD; the 2.0-liter turbo with AWD returns 23/31/26.
Which 2020 Ford Escape trim should I buy?
The 2020 Ford Escape is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, SE Sport, SEL, and Titanium.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The S is the most stripped-down choice, with a 4.2-inch screen, manually adjustable front seats, and steel wheels, so it misses the nicer cabin and tech upgrades found higher up.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SE is the best value because it adds the 8-inch Sync 3 screen, automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a power driver’s seat without jumping to the pricier upper trims.
- Premium/top trim: The Titanium brings the most upscale feel with unique 19-inch wheels, a dual-panel moonroof, acoustic-laminated glass, premium audio, leather seating, and a more luxurious cabin.
- Off-road trim: The SE Sport is more of a style-and-efficiency play than a daily-driver value pick, since it uses a hybrid drivetrain and sporty appearance touches rather than adding practical family-focused upgrades.
Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard across the lineup, so even the base trim gets a strong safety package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford Escape?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,532 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.22% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 76.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,091.29, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Ford Escape's resale value?
The current average of $15,515 sits slightly below last year's $16,905.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help future resale if you buy at the right number today. If you pay close to the lower end of the range, you give yourself a better chance of limiting depreciation pain later. The Escape’s broad appeal and strong feature set should help it stay relevant with used shoppers.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.42/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Ford Escape safe?
It earned the best overall score of Good from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in all phases of testing.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver drowsiness monitor. The Escape also comes with a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, a reversing camera, traction control, and a tire-pressure-monitoring system. That standard safety content is a major strength, especially if you want a used compact SUV with a broad driver-assistance package.
Should I buy a 2020 Ford Escape or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.22% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.42/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It brings a redesigned cabin, multiple powertrain choices, and standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $16,552, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $15,515 average.
- It keeps the same trim lineup with only minor updates.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2020 is the smarter target because it combines a lower average price with strong safety and feature content. If you’re willing to pay more for a slightly newer example, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative, but it does not appear to bring a major enough upgrade to justify the higher average price for most shoppers.
