CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Ford Escape
overall

Summary
With 3,469 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,516.00, 31.7% of 2020 Ford Escapes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Ford Escape 4.42 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
75.6% of 2020 Escape models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Ford Escape stands out as a small SUV that aims to deliver more than the basics. Ford describes it as raising the bar for the segment with impressive tech, performance, and cabin quality, and the available test-drive notes reinforce that it is meant to feel stylish and modern rather than merely practical. It also offers multiple powertrain options and standard advanced safety features, which gives it broad appeal for shoppers who want flexibility along with a strong equipment list.
That said, the 2020 Ford Escape is not without compromises. The main drawback called out in the test-drive data is that it does not offer much cargo space, so buyers who prioritize maximum utility may want to pay close attention to that limitation. Even so, its combination of design, technology, and safety content makes it a compelling choice for shoppers looking for a well-rounded compact SUV.

This model has all the safety features I’ve been looking for to drive safe and confident on the road! It’s also SO good on gas. The main reason I knew this was the one, was because it has all of this AND it was within my budget!!!

I love my new Ford Escape. It drives smoothly and the engine has zip. It is fully loaded and for a decent price. I also liked the Mazda CX-5, but I thought the Escape was a better value. Better engine and more features for a better price.

Is the 2020 Ford Escape a good car?
Generally — the 2020 Ford Escape earns a 4.42/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth driving experience, numerous features, and safety technology. The review summary also points to strong acceleration and comfort, which fits a compact SUV that aims to feel more polished than basic.
The main trade-offs are limited space for taller occupants, a noisy engine under acceleration, and some mixed feedback on the gearshift design and wireless charging compatibility. Ford positions it as a well-rounded small SUV with multiple powertrain options and a strong equipment list, so it makes the most sense if you want flexibility and tech rather than maximum utility. Good and great deals account for 27.8% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Ford Escape reliable?
Owners rate it 4.42/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. The review summary also points to a vehicle that feels smooth, feature-rich, and safety-focused, which are all traits that usually matter when you want something you can count on over time.
The expert notes reinforce that impression by describing the Escape as a high-tech, handsome, and surprisingly athletic small SUV. Ford also includes a broad set of standard safety and convenience features, which can help reduce day-to-day ownership friction.
If you buy used, your biggest long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about choosing a well-kept example with the right equipment and condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Escape?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on every candidate, because accident-free listings are common but not guaranteed. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible wear. Focus on cabin condition, cargo-area wear, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re shopping.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S comes with a 4.2-inch instrument-panel screen, a 4.2-inch center screen, manually adjustable front seats, and steel wheels, while the SE adds an 8-inch Sync 3 screen, automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a power driver’s seat. The SE is the value pick because it adds the most useful everyday upgrades without pushing you into the pricier upper trims.
- Powertrain: The Escape offers four engine options, including a 180-horsepower 3-cylinder, a 250-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder, a 198-horsepower hybrid setup, and a plug-in hybrid variant. The turbo engine is described as brisk, while the hybrid setup is the most efficient version.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver drowsiness monitor. The base trim still gets a full suite of driver-assistance features.
- Infotainment: The base trim uses a 4.2-inch screen, while the SE upgrades to an 8-inch Sync 3 system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system also supports an over-the-air update that improves CarPlay multitasking.
- Fuel efficiency: The non-Sport hybrid returns 44 mpg city, 37 highway, and 41 combined. The SE Sport returns 43/37/40, the 1.5-liter turbo returns 27/33/30 combined, the AWD version of that engine returns 26/31/26, and the 2.0-liter turbo with AWD returns 23/31/26.
Which 2020 Ford Escape trim should I buy?
The 2020 Ford Escape is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, SE Sport, SEL, Titanium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the least expensive way into the Escape, but it comes with the smallest screens and the most basic cabin setup. You should only choose it if price matters more than convenience features.
- SE: This is the best-value trim. It adds the 8-inch Sync 3 screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a power driver’s seat, making it the smartest choice for most shoppers.
- SE Sport: This trim adds a sportier look and a hybrid drivetrain, so it makes sense if you want efficiency with a more distinctive appearance.
- SEL: This trim adds more comfort and convenience, including a hands-free liftgate, memory seating, a heated steering wheel, and upgraded exterior details.
- Titanium: This is the most premium choice, with larger wheels, LED fog lamps, acoustic-laminated glass, a dual-panel moonroof, premium audio, leather seating, and a more upscale cabin feel.
The base S still gets a full suite of driver-assistance features, so safety equipment is not the reason to move up the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford Escape?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find decent value.
- Deal availability: 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,530 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.07% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 75.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,092.82, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Ford Escape's resale value?
The current average of $15,516 sits slightly below last year's $16,879.
That price movement suggests the Escape has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future buyers if you plan to sell later. A softer market today can also mean less upside for immediate resale, especially if you buy near the top of the range. If you choose a well-equipped trim and keep mileage and condition in check, you should be in a better position to hold value than if you buy a stripped or heavily worn example.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.42/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Ford Escape safe?
It earns a Good rating from IIHS in all phases of testing.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver drowsiness monitor. The Escape also comes with a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, a reversing camera, traction control, and a tire-pressure-monitoring system.
The safety story is especially strong because those advanced driver aids are standard rather than reserved for higher trims. That said, you should still confirm the exact feature set on any used example, since trim and equipment combinations can vary.
Should I buy a 2020 Ford Escape or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.07% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.42/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It brings multiple powertrain options, strong tech, and standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $16,468, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $15,516 average.
- It keeps the same trim lineup and adds only minor updates.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the stronger buy because pricing has softened and the equipment list is still competitive. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model year with only modest changes, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative; otherwise, the 2020 gives you the better price-to-feature balance.
