The expert review also emphasizes the Silverado’s broad powertrain lineup and its ability to serve as a versatile, dependable full-size pickup across different use cases.

Chevrolet also includes 10 years of free remote diagnostics and maintenance prompts, which can help you stay on top of ownership needs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that some examples may have been worked hard, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?

At 72% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a truck with towing, off-road, or heavy-use signs. Pay close attention to body condition, camera functionality, and interior wear, since some owners mention feature and visibility complaints. If you’re shopping a higher-trim truck, make sure the equipment you expect is actually present.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Silverado’s look changes with grilles, finishes, wheel designs, and bumper treatments, and the cabin design varies in feel across trims. Base versions can feel more utilitarian, while higher trims add more upscale touches.
• Powertrain: You can find multiple engine choices, including a 3.0-liter turbodiesel 6-cylinder, a turbocharged 2.7-liter 4-cylinder, and a 6.2-liter V8, along with different transmissions. The diesel can return up to 27 mpg on the highway, and the 6.2-liter V8 is described as the engine to recommend.
• Safety package: Forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and camera-based adaptive cruise control are limited to LTZ and High Country. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning can be added to LT and RST.
• Infotainment: You get a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Chevrolet Connected Access, and a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot. Available upgrades include navigation, wireless device charging, a high-definition display, SiriusXM 360L, and a 7-speaker Bose system.
• Fuel efficiency: The diesel engine returns up to 27 mpg on the highway, and the test truck averaged 16.8 mpg in mixed driving.

Which 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is offered in 6 trim levels: WT, Custom, LT, RST, LTZ, and High Country.

Here's the short version:

• WT: This is the work-focused starting point, and it makes sense if you want the Silverado’s core capability without paying for extra comfort or tech.
• Custom: This trim adds more personality and is also one of the trims that can be paired with the Trail Boss treatment, making it a better fit if you want a more distinctive look.
• LT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it sits in the middle of the lineup and can be paired with useful add-ons like blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning.
• RST: Choose this if you want a more style-forward truck and want access to the same optional blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning features.
• LTZ: This is where the Silverado’s advanced safety tech becomes standard, including forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and camera-based adaptive cruise control.
• High Country: This is the most upscale choice, with the same advanced safety suite as LTZ and the most premium positioning in the lineup.

The safety-package cutoff is important: the most advanced driver-assistance features are standard only on LTZ and High Country.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 13,338 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.60% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 72.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $27,863, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500's resale value?

The current average of $27,863 sits slightly below last year's $30,483.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer now, but it also suggests future sellers may face a more competitive resale environment if the market stays loose. Trucks with stronger equipment, cleaner histories, and better-maintained condition should hold up better than stripped or heavily used examples. If you buy well today, you improve your odds of minimizing depreciation later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 safe?

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, and the IIHS gives it a Marginal rating for front passenger protection in a small overlap frontal-impact collision on the right side.

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

Chevrolet includes a rear-seat reminder system and Teen Driver as standard equipment, but the more advanced driver-assistance features are not broadly standard. Forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and camera-based adaptive cruise control are limited to LTZ and High Country, while blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning is available on LT and RST. The IIHS also says the headlights are Poor, which is a notable shortcoming.

Should I buy a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 72% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.60% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds a new 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine, broader powertrain availability, a bed-view camera, and camera-based adaptive cruise control.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $25,851, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $27,863 average.
• It’s a redesigned truck with a comfortable ride, solid performance, and a spacious interior.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $30,353, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $27,863 average.
• It adds broad appeal with easy-to-use technology and a more livable cabin.

The bottom line: The 2020 is the right pick if you want the year’s added powertrain and tech updates at a softer price than newer models. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, the 2019 can still make sense; if you want a newer truck and can spend more, the 2021 is the better upgrade path.
