Redesigned last year, the BMW X4 gets minor equipment changes for 2020. Key rivals include the Mercedes GLC-Class, Acura RDX, and BMW's own X3.

Last year’s redesign gave the X4 a more fastback-like profile, which works in its favor in terms of both aesthetics and functionality, since there’s more space for passengers and cargo. It’s unmistakably BMW: bold haunches filled with fancy alloy wheels, a kidney grille, and eye-catching lighting.

Two powertrains are available with the X4. The base xDrive30i features a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine rated for 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The M40i gets a 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder, which puts out 355 hp and 365 lb-ft. An 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive (AWD) come standard with both. The M trim also gets sport brakes, an adaptive suspension system, Shadowline exterior trim, and a body kit. The xDrive30i is rated for 23 mpg city, 28 highway, and 25 combined, while the M40i gets 21/27/23.

The Comfort Access keyless entry feature is newly standard for 2020, joining 19-inch wheels, a panoramic moonroof, power-folding heated side mirrors, a power liftgate, 10-way power front seats, and leatherette upholstery. For a heated steering wheel and heated front seats, consider the Premium Package.

Infotainment features are similar between the two trims. A 10.25-inch touchscreen comes standard with a 12-speaker audio system, HD Radio, Apple CarPlay, and real-time traffic information. Live Cockpit Professional is new for this year, and includes features like voice recognition, gesture control, and navigation. The optional Convenience Package adds wireless charging, WiFi capability, and satellite radio with a year’s subscription.

The BMW X4 has not been evaluated for crash-worthiness by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Safety tech for both trims includes a reversing camera and front and rear parking sensors. The Driving Assistance Package adds blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning. It’s hard to stand out in the crowded small luxury crossover segment, but the BMW X4’s unique styling and appealing powertrains certainly help. This BMW should be considered by most shoppers in this category.
