CarGurus Analysis: 2020 BMW 3 Series
overall

Summary
With 1,512 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,985, 33.3% of 2020 BMW 3 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 BMW 3 Series 4.14 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
72.0% of 2020 BMW 3 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 BMW 3 Series stands out as a sedan built for drivers who care as much about the experience behind the wheel as they do about everyday comfort. BMW’s own summary says the arrival of the 2020 BMW M340i, positioned between the existing 330i and the forthcoming M3, shows there is substance behind the brand’s “The Ultimate Driving Machine” slogan. That makes the 2020 3 Series especially appealing to shoppers who want a car with a performance-first personality rather than a purely practical one.
At the same time, this BMW is not just about sharp responses and power. The test-drive data highlights that it is fun to drive, comfortable, and powered by a strong engine, which gives it a broad appeal for buyers who want a sporty sedan that can still work well in daily use. The tradeoff is that its design may be polarizing, and it is described as poor value for money, so it is best suited to buyers who prioritize driving enjoyment and refinement over bargain pricing.
Owner feedback generally reinforces that impression, with praise for the car’s design, performance, and comfortable interior. Some reviewers also noted that the cabin can feel a bit cramped for taller occupants and that interior noise can be distracting, which are worth considering for anyone weighing the 2020 BMW 3 Series against its strengths.

Purchased the 2020 M340 , so far so good . I actually had an S4 previously. They are really similar but M340 takes the performance to the next level .

I have test driven only the M 340. It is excellent. I am currently driving an M240 convertible and if I was not a lover of the open sky would definitely trade this in. The power delivery is excellent and the interior is well appointed. I love the tactile feel. The steering wheel is a nice touch. The only criticism is that getting into the back can be a bit of a chore if you are over 6 feet.

Simply it seemed to me that the BMW 3 is great but being a big guy I find it a bit too small in the cabin. .

How much does the 2020 BMW 3 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $24,015 |
| Year-Round Low | $23,621 |
| Year-Round High | $25,838 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $25,489 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.78% |
Prices have softened 5.78% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,506 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Generally — the 2020 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.14/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
Owners repeatedly praise the design, performance, and comfortable interior, and the M340 variant gets especially strong feedback for its power and driving dynamics. The car is also described as fun to drive and comfortable, which fits a sedan that aims to balance daily usability with a performance-first personality.
The main trade-offs are its polarizing design and weak value proposition, and some reviewers mention a cramped cabin for taller occupants plus distracting interior noise. That makes it a better fit if you care more about driving enjoyment and refinement than bargain pricing or maximum space.
Good and great deals account for 33.6% of listings, so there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.14/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that many drivers feel good about living with over time, especially when you factor in the praise for its comfortable interior and strong performance. The review summary also leans toward a dependable ownership experience for shoppers who value the car’s core strengths and are willing to accept its premium positioning.
The test-drive notes reinforce that sense of confidence by describing the car as fun to drive and comfortable, with a strong engine that supports everyday use. BMW also includes free scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles of ownership, which helps soften early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability than about paying premium-car money for a vehicle that can still feel expensive to own.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?
At 71.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had multiple owners or any repair history. Focus on condition, equipment, and how the car was maintained, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on whether it still feels tight, refined, and well cared for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 330i starts at a much lower price than the M340i, and the M340i adds a more aggressive appearance and a stronger performance focus. If you want the best value, the 330i is the trim to compare first, while the M340i suits you if you want the most engaging setup and can justify the higher cost.
- Powertrain: The M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive. It is tuned for strong acceleration and enthusiast-friendly handling.
- Safety package: BMW says you need two Driving Assistance option packages to get all of its latest advanced driver-assistance systems. The lane-keeping assist is described as abrupt, so you should verify exactly which systems are installed on any listing you consider.
- Infotainment: The latest iDrive system includes a touchscreen display, natural voice recognition, gesture control, and the familiar knob and buttons on the center console. The touchscreen and voice system are strong points, while the flatter control layout can be harder to use by touch.
- Fuel efficiency: No fuel-economy figure is stated in the available data.
Which 2020 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2020 BMW 3 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 330i and M340i.
Here's the short version:
- 330i: This is the trim to start with if you want the most accessible entry point into the lineup. It gives you the core 3 Series experience at a much lower price than the M340i, and it makes the strongest sense if you care more about the badge, balance, and everyday livability than maximum performance.
- M340i: This is the best-value trim if you want the full enthusiast version of the car. It adds the standout performance hardware, the 382-horsepower turbocharged inline-6, and the most compelling driving character in the range.
BMW says you need two Driving Assistance option packages to get all of its latest advanced driver-assistance systems.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,506 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.78% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,621, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $24,015 sits slightly below last year's $25,489.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently today. For a future seller, it also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car is equipped.
Because this model still attracts buyers who want a sporty luxury sedan, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones. Listings with desirable equipment and strong presentation are likely to hold up better than average.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.14/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series safe?
The BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS when equipped with the adaptive full LED headlights.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
BMW says you need two Driving Assistance option packages to get all of its latest advanced driver-assistance systems. The lane-keeping assist is described as abrupt, and the systems are presented as optional rather than standard, so you should check equipment carefully on any used listing.
Should I buy a 2020 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.78% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.14/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- BMW’s 2020 update proves the car still backs up its “Ultimate Driving Machine” reputation.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $20,655, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $24,015 average.
- It keeps the traditional sport-sedan formula while adding a more modern software experience.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,347, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $24,015 average.
- It adds the 330e plug-in hybrid for buyers who want an efficiency-minded option.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of performance and everyday comfort, the 2020 is the right year to target. If price matters more than having the newest version, the 2019 is the smarter value play. If you want a newer model-year alternative and are open to a broader lineup, the 2021 is worth a look, but you will pay more for it.
