How much does the 2020 BMW 3 Series cost?

Prices have softened 7.27% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,409 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of cars to compare.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2020 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.14/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Drivers repeatedly praise its performance, beautiful design, and comfortable interior. The overview also frames it as a sedan for buyers who care about how a car feels on the road, while still being comfortable enough to broaden its appeal. On the downside, the expert notes point to a potentially polarizing design and weak value, which matches user feedback about pricing and value concerns.

The market still shows meaningful interest, with 35.0% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.14/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a car that many drivers feel good about living with, especially when it comes to performance and comfort. The review summary also suggests a premium sedan that can be satisfying over time, even if some shoppers worry about price and value. The expert notes add that BMW includes free scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles of ownership, which helps reduce early ownership burden.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright dependability and more about whether the car was maintained carefully and priced appropriately for its premium running costs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?

At 70.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a car with premium options or higher mileage. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and evidence of prior bodywork or cosmetic repair. Because this model can be expensive to buy and own, a clean, well-kept example matters more than chasing the lowest sticker price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 330i starts at a high price, while the M340i adds a much more desirable driving experience and a richer equipment mix. The interior is described as customizable with different colors and materials, and the M340i stands out as the trim that most driving enthusiasts will want.
• Powertrain: The M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, paired with BMW’s rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic transmission. The setup is tuned for strong acceleration and engaging handling.
• Safety package: To get BMW’s latest advanced driver-assistance systems, you need two Driving Assistance option packages. The standard feature list includes lane-keeping assist, and the car earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating when equipped with adaptive full LED headlights.
• Infotainment: The system includes a touchscreen display, natural voice recognition, gesture control, and the familiar knob and buttons on the center console. The touchscreen is described as intuitive, and the voice system can handle natural commands for navigation, climate, and audio.
• Fuel efficiency: The provided data does not state MPG or MPGe figures.

Which 2020 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2020 BMW 3 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 330i and M340i.

Here's the short version:

• 330i: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core 3 Series experience at the lowest starting price. It makes sense if you want the badge, the driving feel, and a more accessible way into the lineup, but the expert notes make clear that the M340i is the more compelling choice if you care most about performance.
• M340i: This is the best-value trim for enthusiasts because it adds the 382-horsepower turbocharged inline-six, xDrive availability, and the most exciting driving character in the lineup. If you want the version that best matches the car’s “Ultimate Driving Machine” reputation, this is the one to target.

For safety, the car earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating when equipped with adaptive full LED headlights, so make sure the example you’re considering has the right lighting setup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully but not so much that every listing is a bargain.

• Deal availability: 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,409 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.27% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 70.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $23,606, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $23,720 sits slightly below last year's $25,579.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you’ll be starting from a more favorable entry price than last year’s shoppers. Premium cars with strong enthusiast appeal can still hold attention, but the current trend shows that this model year has softened enough to reward careful shopping.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.14/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series safe?

The BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety when equipped with adaptive full LED headlights.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

To equip the car with BMW’s latest advanced driver-assistance systems, you need two Driving Assistance option packages. The standard lane-keeping assist is described as abrupt, and the expert notes suggest the systems are accurate but not especially smooth. That means you should pay close attention to which safety equipment is actually installed on the used example you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2020 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 70.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.27% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.14/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 stands out for its strong driving enjoyment, with the M340i reinforcing BMW’s performance-first identity.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $20,304, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $23,720 average.
• It keeps the traditional BMW sport-sedan formula while adding a notably improved software experience.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $24,867, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $23,720 average.
• It adds the 330e plug-in hybrid, giving you an efficiency-focused option.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of performance, comfort, and current-market value, the 2020 is the one to target. If your priority is saving money, the 2019 is the smarter budget play. If you want a newer-year option and are interested in efficiency, the 2021 is worth a look, but you’ll pay more for it.
