How much does the 2020 BMW 3 Series cost?

Prices have softened 8.23% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,454 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2020 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.1/5 user rating and an 8.2/10 expert rating, which points to broad appeal with clear enthusiast leanings. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Drivers repeatedly praise its performance, comfortable interior, and beautiful design, with especially strong enthusiasm for the M340 variant’s power and driving dynamics. The overview also frames it as a sedan for buyers who care about how a car feels on the road, while still being comfortable enough to widen its appeal.

The trade-offs are just as clear: the design can be polarizing, and value is a recurring concern. The expert notes also point to a high starting price and extra-cost options that can push the total up quickly.

With 32.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively if you want the right mix of driving feel and premium features.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.1/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a car that many drivers feel good about living with over time, especially when it comes to its performance and comfortable cabin. The expert notes also reinforce that it is built around a strong driving experience, which often aligns with buyers who plan to keep a car and enjoy it rather than treat it as a disposable commuter.

BMW includes free scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles of ownership, which helps soften early ownership costs. Even so, the high purchase price and option-heavy setup mean long-term ownership risk is still tied to how well the car was maintained and how much wear it has accumulated.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?

At 69.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been optioned heavily or driven hard. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of prior bodywork or interior wear, since value and pricing are already key concerns with this model.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 330i starts at $40,750 and is the entry point, while the M340i raises the stakes with a much more powerful setup and a higher price. The base car gives you the core 3 Series experience, but the M340i is the one that most clearly delivers the standout driving character.
• Powertrain: The M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, paired with BMW’s rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic transmission. It is tuned for strong acceleration and engaging road manners.
• Safety package: BMW says you need two Driving Assistance option packages to get all of the brand’s latest advanced driver-assistance systems. The standard setup is not described as fully loaded, so trim and option content matter here.
• Infotainment: The system includes a touchscreen display, natural voice recognition, gesture control, and the familiar center-console controller. The touchscreen is praised as intuitive, while gesture control is optional.
• Fuel efficiency: No fuel-economy figure is stated in the available data.

Which 2020 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2020 BMW 3 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 330i and M340i.

Here's the short version:

• 330i: This is the entry point and the trim to consider if you want the 3 Series experience without stretching to the top of the range. It keeps the core luxury-sedan formula intact, but the expert notes make clear that the M340i is the one that really transforms the car into a standout driver’s machine.
• M340i: This is the best-value trim if you care most about performance. It adds the 382-horsepower inline-6, rear-biased xDrive, a rear M Sport differential, and M Sport brakes, making it the clear choice for enthusiasts who want the most rewarding version of the car.

BMW says you need two Driving Assistance option packages to get all of the brand’s latest advanced driver-assistance systems.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,454 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.23% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 69.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $23,598, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $23,598 sits slightly below last year's $25,714.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key will be keeping mileage, condition, and maintenance history strong enough to stand out in a market where buyers have plenty of alternatives.

The 3 Series still has brand appeal and a strong enthusiast following, which helps support demand. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.1/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series safe?

The 2020 BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS when equipped with the adaptive full LED headlights.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW says you need two Driving Assistance option packages to get all of the brand’s latest advanced driver-assistance systems. The systems include lane-keeping assist, and the expert notes describe it as abrupt, which is worth keeping in mind if you want a smoother semi-automated driving experience.

Should I buy a 2020 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 69.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.23% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.1/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 stands out for its strong driving enjoyment and the arrival of the M340i, which reinforces BMW’s performance-first identity.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $20,157, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $23,598 average.
• It keeps the classic BMW sport-sedan formula while adding a stronger software experience.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $24,904, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $23,598 average.
• It adds the 330e plug-in hybrid for buyers who want efficiency without leaving the sedan format.

The bottom line: Buy the 2020 if you want the strongest blend of driving enjoyment and current-market value. If price is your top priority, the 2019 is the smarter bargain; if you want a newer lineup with a plug-in hybrid option, look to 2021.
