How much does the 2020 BMW 3 Series cost?

Prices have softened 9.51% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,469 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2020 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.1/5 user rating and an 8.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Drivers consistently praise its performance, comfortable interior, and beautiful design. The overview also points to a car that is built for driving enjoyment while still being comfortable enough to broaden its appeal.

The trade-offs are clear: the design can be polarizing, and value is a recurring concern. That makes it a stronger fit if you want a premium sedan that prioritizes the driving experience over bargain pricing.

Good and great deals account for 35.9% of listings, so you still have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.1/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. Review feedback also points to a car that many drivers find dependable and trouble-free enough to recommend, with long-term ownership confidence showing up in the way people describe it.

The expert notes reinforce that sense of durability by describing the car as a polished, well-engineered sedan with free scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles of ownership.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that premium ownership costs can rise quickly if the car has been poorly maintained or heavily optioned.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?

At 68.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been optioned heavily or driven hard. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and whether the cabin, electronics, and driving feel match the mileage and asking price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 330i starts at $40,750, while the M340i rises to $56,000 and adds a much more performance-focused character. The M340i is the standout if you want the most engaging version, but the 330i is the better-value starting point if you want the core 3 Series experience without the higher sticker shock.
• Powertrain: The M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, plus xDrive all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic transmission. It is the trim that best captures the car’s performance-first personality.
• Safety package: To get the latest advanced driver-assistance systems, you need two Driving Assistance option packages. The suite includes lane-keeping assist, but the notes suggest the systems can feel less smooth than you might expect.
• Infotainment: The system includes a touchscreen display, natural voice recognition, gesture control, and the familiar center-console controller. The touchscreen is the easiest way to use it, while gesture control is optional.
• Fuel efficiency: The M340i can reach 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, but no MPG figure is stated in the available data.

Which 2020 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2020 BMW 3 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 330i and M340i.

Here's the short version:

• 330i: This is the trim to start with if you want the 3 Series experience at the lowest entry price. It gives you the core luxury-sedan formula, and the review notes suggest many driving enthusiasts would be happy with it while saving a meaningful amount of money.
• M340i: This is the best-value trim if you care most about performance. It adds the turbocharged inline-6, xDrive, and the more serious chassis and brake hardware that make the car feel especially rewarding to drive.

The safety package is not standard and requires two Driving Assistance option packages.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?

The market looks selective rather than overheated, which gives you room to shop carefully.

• Deal availability: 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,469 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.51% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 68.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $23,354, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $23,354 sits slightly below last year's $25,808.

That price movement suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you purchase near the current average or below it, you may have less downside left than a buyer who paid closer to original market highs.

Condition and trim matter a lot here, especially because higher-spec versions can be expensive to maintain and replace. A well-kept example with strong documentation should be easier to resell than one with a questionable history or neglected service.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.1/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series safe?

The 2020 BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety when equipped with the adaptive full LED headlights.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

To equip the car with all of BMW’s latest advanced driver-assistance systems, you need two Driving Assistance option packages. The available systems include lane-keeping assist, though the notes say the tuning can feel abrupt and not especially smooth.

Should I buy a 2020 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.51% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.1/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 stands out for its strong driving enjoyment, powerful engine, and comfortable premium feel.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $20,012, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $23,354 average.
• It emphasizes BMW’s traditional sporty formula with a more software-forward feel.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $24,957, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $23,354 average.
• It adds the 330e plug-in hybrid model for buyers who want efficiency without leaving the 3 Series lineup.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of driving enjoyment and comfort, the 2020 is the best primary target. If price matters most, the 2019 is the smarter value play, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the newer lineup’s added efficiency option.
