Why it stands out
The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon stands out as a stylish alternative to the familiar crossover SUV formula. It is aimed at drivers who want a roomy and practical vehicle with added foul-weather traction, but who do not want to drive one of the same SUVs as everyone else. That combination gives it a distinctive appeal: it offers everyday usefulness without leaning into the look and feel of the typical family hauler.
Beyond its design, the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon is described as fun to drive and an excellent value for money. Those strengths make it appealing to buyers who want something more engaging than the average practical vehicle. The main drawback noted is unintuitive technology, so while the Arteon has a lot going for it, its controls may take some getting used to.

Until recently I had a 17 Passat R-line 1.8T (totalled unfortunately). I test drove the Arteon R-line and was impressed with the power (268 HP), but... It was a far more expensive car, but really offered nothing more than the Passat, other than the additional 98 horsepower. I test drove a used 19 Arteon (asking price 28,500), and didnt feel that the value was there. I would be more likely to buy a 22 Passat R-line 2.0T for a slightly higher price.

How much does the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,604 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,123 |
| Year-Round High | $19,907 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,943 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.71% |
Prices have softened 6.71% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 72 listings available, which suggests a relatively limited pool of inventory to choose from.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon a good car?
Generally — the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon earns a 4/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Form and function, and Cost effectiveness.
It stands out as a stylish alternative to the typical crossover SUV, while still giving you roomy, practical utility and available all-wheel drive for foul-weather traction. The expert notes also describe it as fun to drive and an excellent value for money.
The main trade-off is unintuitive technology, and the expert review also points to packaging quirks around Car-Net availability. If you want something more distinctive than a mainstream family hauler but still useful every day, this model fits that brief well.
Only 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is somewhat selective rather than broadly discounted.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The expert review describes the Arteon as comfortable, practical, and enjoyable to drive, which supports the case for steady day-to-day ownership. It also notes that the car’s mechanical components proved commendable during testing, even if the transmission could be a little rough in Comfort mode.
The cost-effectiveness notes also point to strong warranty coverage and mention free scheduled maintenance in later model-year coverage changes, which reinforces the idea that ownership costs can be manageable. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is more about technology and feature packaging than basic durability.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volkswagen Arteon?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 75% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re shopping outside the cleanest listings. Focus on overall condition, feature operation, and whether the car’s technology behaves the way you expect in daily use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE gives you the Arteon’s core style and utility, while SEL adds navigation, Digital Cockpit, adaptive headlights, and other upgrades that make the cabin feel more complete. SEL Premium is the most feature-rich choice, but the base trim leaves some desirable tech and convenience items off the table.
- Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic. The available 4Motion all-wheel-drive system helps with traction, and the car’s fuel economy is better than a typical SUV.
- Safety package: Every Arteon includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. SEL adds adaptive headlights, while SEL Premium adds automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.
- Infotainment: The standard setup uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Car-Net App Connect, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mirror Link. Navigation is standard on SEL, and SEL Premium adds the top-tier tech extras, including the premium audio system and parking assistance features.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test loop returned 23.9 mpg in combined driving, versus an EPA rating of 23 mpg combined.
Which 2019 Volkswagen Arteon trim should I buy?
The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon is offered in 3 trim levels: SE, SEL, and SEL Premium.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the value play if you want the Arteon’s style, roomy hatchback utility, standard all-wheel-drive availability, and core driver-assistance features without paying for extras you may not need.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds navigation, Digital Cockpit, adaptive headlights, and a more complete tech-and-convenience mix without jumping all the way to the top trim.
- SEL Premium: Choose this if you want the most advanced comfort and convenience equipment, including the premium sound system, parking assistance, surround-view camera, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.
For safety, every Arteon gets important driver-assistance features, but adaptive headlights are added with SEL and automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist are reserved for SEL Premium.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Volkswagen Arteon?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without expecting huge discounts everywhere.
- Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 72 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.71% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 75.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,123, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon's resale value?
The current average of $18,604 sits slightly below last year's $19,943.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you can reduce the hit from depreciation.
The Arteon’s distinctive styling and strong utility should help it stand out to future shoppers who want something different from a crossover. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon safe?
The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon earns a Poor rating from IIHS headlight testing, which keeps it from earning a Top Safety Pick rating.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Every Arteon includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. SEL adds adaptive headlights, and SEL Premium adds automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.
The main safety caveat is the poor headlight performance, which is the standout weakness in an otherwise strong safety package.
Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Arteon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 75% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.71% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 stands out as a stylish, practical alternative to the typical crossover SUV, with strong value and fun-to-drive character.
The bottom line: If you want the Arteon’s distinctive styling, roomy hatchback utility, and strong value, the 2019 is the right place to start. If you’re especially price-sensitive, shop carefully for a clean, well-priced listing and prioritize the SEL trim if you want the best balance of features and value.
