CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
overall

Summary
With 989 currently listed for sale and an average price of $25,509, 33.3% of 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 4.38 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid stands out as a compact SUV that blends efficiency with a more rugged look than before. In this version, it no longer has the softer, more anonymous appearance it wore the year before; instead, it looks tougher and more rugged. That visual shift helps explain part of its appeal, especially for buyers who want a hybrid that does not feel purely economy-focused.
It is also presented as the sportiest and most cost-effective way to get into a RAV4, which makes it especially compelling on value. The fuel efficiency is a major strength, and the overall package is described as excellent value for money and stylish. The main drawback is its outdated technology, and owner feedback echoes that concern by noting that the tech features can feel a bit behind the times. Even so, the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid comes across as a practical, appealing choice for shoppers who want strong fuel economy, a comfortable interior, and a hybrid SUV with more personality than the average commuter vehicle.

I have only had the 2019 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid for a few days. So far I can say I enjoy driving it. The space inside is good for me and my daughter. The seats are comfortable. The ride is smooth. There is good acceleration when getting on the highway. The brakes work well.

I bought this car and I love it. I was in a small Kia Niro 2020 hybrid before and though my gas mileage was better I did not feel as safe as I do in the Toyota Rav4 hybrid. When I accelerate it actually accelerates and I live in a climate with ice and snow in the winter so the all wheel drive is something I feel better about having.

Owners consistently praise the impressive fuel economy, the performance, and the comfort of the interior. The main recurring trade-off is that the tech features can feel a bit outdated, and some owners say the cabin can be underwhelming for the price.
That fits the broader use case well: you’re looking at a compact SUV that leans into efficiency, comfort, and style rather than cutting-edge tech. With 34.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.
Is the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 4.38/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with strong confidence in the hybrid system and everyday use. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by noting that the battery chemistry has proven reliable over 20-plus years and millions of Toyota hybrids sold.
ToyotaCare also includes the first two service visits and roadside assistance, which helps reduce early ownership friction. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the hybrid system and maintenance history are clean before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?
At 71.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on any listing that looks unusually cheap. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and whether the hybrid and braking systems feel consistent on a test drive.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The XSE stands out with glossy black exterior trim, 18-inch wheels, blue-striped cloth seats, and sport-tuned dampers and springs, while the cabin uses padded surfaces, blue stitching, and upscale-looking trim details. The base trims are less richly equipped, so you should compare feature content carefully if you want the best value.
- Powertrain: The hybrid system pairs a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with two electric motors and a 1.6-kilowatt battery for 219 horsepower. It drives quietly and seamlessly around town, and the battery chemistry is described as reliable, though the standard AWD can be slow to counter wheelspin and the brake feel is soft.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense comes standard with forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise, traffic-sign recognition, and auto high beams. Rear emergency braking is optional, so that’s a trim-and-package detail worth checking.
- Infotainment: The screen accepts swiping and pinching gestures, and Apple CarPlay is standard, but Android Auto is not. Toyota’s Entune 3.0 apps depend on a smartphone connection, and the maps are described as dated.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates it at 41 mpg city, 38 highway, and 40 combined, and the expert test drive returned 36 mpg over 400 mostly highway miles.
Which 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the hybrid basics at the lowest price, but you should expect fewer of the style and comfort upgrades that make the higher trims feel more special.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday comfort and convenience without pushing you all the way to the top of the range.
- XSE: This is the standout choice if you want the coolest look and the most engaging driving feel, especially with the XSE Cold Weather package. It also gets the sportier chassis tuning that helps it feel more polished on the road.
- Limited: This is the trim to consider if you want the most upscale version of the hybrid and are willing to pay for it.
Toyota Safety Sense comes standard, and rear emergency braking is optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 982 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,310, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $25,329 sits slightly above last year's $25,179.
That small increase suggests the market has stayed stable rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For you as a future seller, that usually means pricing power is more predictable, especially if your vehicle has clean history and strong condition.
The model’s strong fuel economy and broad appeal should help keep buyer interest steady. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.38/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid safe?
The 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid earns four-star ratings for the driver's-side frontal crash test and rollover resistance from NHTSA, and five-star ratings for the front passenger in the frontal crash test and for front and rear passengers in the side barrier and side pole tests. The IIHS rated the RAV4, not the Hybrid, Good in all six crash tests and Superior for collision avoidance, but low headlight scores kept it from Top Safety Pick status.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense comes standard, including forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise, traffic-sign recognition, and auto high beams. A passenger-seat cushion airbag and a driver's knee airbag are also standard, while rear emergency braking is optional.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.38/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 brings a tougher, more rugged look and is the sportiest, most cost-effective way into a RAV4 Hybrid.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $26,966, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $25,329 average.
- It adds a roomier, more practical-feeling package with plenty of standard multimedia and safety features.
The bottom line: If you want the better value and can live with the older tech, the 2019 is the smarter buy. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model-year package, the 2020 is the cleaner upgrade path for price-insensitive shoppers.
