Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback makes a strong impression with its stylish redesign, showcasing Toyota’s efforts to modernize the small car segment. Packed with a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine generating 168 horsepower, it delivers a balanced mix of power and efficiency, supported by an innovative Dynamic Shift CVT that enhances the driving experience. This new model benefits from an upgraded suspension that provides a smooth ride while handling everyday driving challenges effectively. Inside, owners appreciate the spacious interior equipped with quality materials and a new Entune 3.0 infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay. While the car offers a strong value proposition, it does face some criticism regarding its cargo space and steering feel, which might not satisfy performance enthusiasts. Overall, the Corolla Hatchback stands out for buyers looking for a reliable, fuel-efficient vehicle with a modern flair, perfect for city commuting and versatile enough for daily use.

So far, I really like it. It reminds me of two of my previous vehicles: the Honda Fit and the Toyota Prius V, which are both excellent vehicles.

Rating is for SE Upgrade Edition (Canadian) (4.5 stars so I rounded up) We bought this car (used) as a commuter for me, and it was a downgrade from our main / previous car, a BMW. So there was a bit of a learning curve (nowhere near the zip, altogether different brakes) but the majority of cars Ive driven have been Toyota sedans / hatchbacks, so it felt very similar to those. Pluses: It is so compact and easy to park - I am a nervous driver, but find I am able to park in tight lots without too much stress. Fun to drive at a low price point (not just up front, but gas - it sips regular & maintenance is very reasonable). Zippy enough for my husband, who is more of a car guy. Fits me well (Im 57) and feels good when driving. My much larger husband (62, muscular build) fits and can drive it comfortably. SE Upgrade version has heated steering wheel (yay) and the nicer wheels. This model also has heated seats, backup camera, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise, lane departure warning, emergency braking, and probably some features Ive forgotten. Minuses: Very little cargo / passenger space. I took a road trip with 2 other people, and between us and our luggage, almost every available inch of the car was full (well, we didnt block the rear window). It may have 3 rear seats, but the passengers would all have to be quite small. It feels like less storage than our coupe BMW had. I have 2 family members with Honda Fits (2013 & 2016) and Fits have amazing cargo space in comparison. Not a lot of leg room for front passenger. There was a fuel pump recall, which the dealer took care of (but be aware and check the records). I find that it hesitates a little sometimes when trying to turn quickly from a stop or slow (like when trying to turn left or right when theres a gap in traffic). Im not sure if its just because the car is less powerful than our old one but Ive tried to change my driving techniques to make sure I look for larger gaps. Overall, this is not my dream car but it is the right car for me, and the car I can afford to drive and maintain at this time. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable, inexpensive, fun vehicle.
