CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Subaru Forester

Summary
With 141 currently listed for sale near San Francisco, CA and an average price of $18,900, 31.9% of 2019 Subaru Foresters for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.

Why it stands out
The 2019 Subaru Forester stands out as a practical compact SUV built around the qualities many buyers want most: all-weather capability, passenger space, cargo room, and solid fuel economy. Subaru’s long history with the Forester also gives it a clear identity, and the 2019 model continues that formula with standard all-wheel drive, standard advanced safety features, and easy-to-use technology. For shoppers who value confidence in poor weather and a straightforward ownership experience, those strengths make it especially appealing.
At the same time, the 2019 Subaru Forester is not trying to win on excitement. Its performance is described as fairly pedestrian, and its styling is uninspired. Even so, that tradeoff may suit buyers who care more about usefulness than flash. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for its spaciousness, safety features, visibility, comfort, and all-wheel drive capability, while some drivers note the lack of a standard transmission option and difficulties with Android connectivity.

Reviewed a 2019 Subaru Forester on Nov 12, 2020
This is our first Subaru, we have previously driven - Toyota Rav4, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Patriot, and Hyundai Santa Fe. We wanted to find a Subaru Forester as we grow our family because of the longevity of the vehicle and the amazing safety ratings. The 2019 Forester is going to be perfect for us. It gets great gas mileage, the visibility from the drivers seat is unmatched, its spacious, and has plenty of room in the trunk for groceries, luggage, a dog, whatever you need. We like the height of the vehicle and it runs very smoothly. This car is a great value, especially if it lasts the way most Subarus seem to last! We also looked at getting an Outback, but after a bit of research, decided that the Forester was more fitting for our family and lifestyle.

How much does the 2019 Subaru Forester cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,970 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,706 |
| Year-Round High | $19,990 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,988 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.10% |
Prices have softened 5.10% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,176 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2019 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 4.9/5 user rating points to very strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 8.17/10. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the Forester for its spaciousness, safety features, visibility, comfort, and all-wheel drive capability. That lines up well with the Forester’s role as a practical compact SUV for families and shoppers who want confidence in poor weather and a straightforward ownership experience.
The main trade-offs are its fairly pedestrian performance and uninspired styling. In other words, you’re buying it for usefulness, not excitement.
Good and great deals account for 34.1% of listings, so there’s still room to find a competitive price if you shop carefully.
Is the 2019 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise for the Forester’s long-term usefulness, all-wheel drive capability, and the kind of practicality buyers can count on. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the Forester as a vehicle built around utility, value, and everyday confidence.
The ownership picture is helped by the Forester’s standard safety and easy-to-use tech, and the available maintenance-friendly ownership experience adds to its appeal. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright reliability and more about making sure the specific vehicle has been cared for properly.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Subaru Forester?
At 73.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this model is often bought for practicality and safety, condition matters as much as mileage. It’s also worth focusing on how well the cabin, infotainment, and driver-assistance features have held up in daily use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Base trim comes with standard LED headlights, symmetrical all-wheel drive, EyeSight, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, and useful cargo-friendly touches, while Premium adds a panoramic moonroof, power front seats, and 4G Wi-Fi capability. Sport adds unique styling, heated front seats, paddle shifters, and a windshield wiper de-icer, while Limited and Touring bring more upscale features such as leather upholstery, an 8-inch touchscreen, and additional comfort equipment.
- Powertrain: The 2019 Forester uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine with 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and standard symmetrical AWD. It emphasizes smoothness and efficiency over quick acceleration, and SI-Drive plus X-Mode help tailor response for different conditions.
- Safety package: EyeSight is standard on every trim and includes forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, adaptive headlights, and lane-keeping Assist. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on Limited and Touring, so lower trims miss those features.
- Infotainment: Base and Premium use a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while Limited and Touring get an 8-inch screen with Subaru Starlink. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the larger screen is optional on Sport.
- Fuel efficiency: The Forester is rated at 26 mpg city, 33 highway, and 29 combined.
Which 2019 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?
The 2019 Subaru Forester is offered in 5 trim levels: Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the value play if you want the Forester’s core strengths at the lowest entry point. You still get standard AWD, EyeSight, LED headlights, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, and the practical cabin layout that makes the Forester easy to live with.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a panoramic moonroof, power front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, reclining rear seatbacks, and 4G Wi-Fi capability without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- Sport: Choose this if you want more style and a few cold-weather and convenience upgrades, including unique exterior and interior accents, heated front seats, paddle shifters, LED fog lights, and a windshield wiper de-icer.
- Limited: This is the trim to target if you want the more upscale feel, with leather upholstery, a power rear tailgate, dual-zone climate control, the larger 8-inch touchscreen, and standard blind-spot monitoring plus rear cross-traffic alert.
- Touring: Pick this if you want the most comfort and convenience features, including heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, navigation, and one-touch quick-release folding rear seats.
Every trim includes EyeSight, so even the lower trims start with a strong safety foundation.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Subaru Forester?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,176 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.10% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 73.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,706, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $18,970 sits slightly below last year's $19,988.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. The current range still shows healthy demand, which helps support value, especially for well-kept examples with clean history and desirable equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Subaru Forester safe?
The 2019 Subaru Forester earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
It earns standard EyeSight driver-assistance features across the lineup, including forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, adaptive headlights, and lane-keeping Assist. It also includes a reversing camera and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags.
The Forester’s strong visibility adds another layer of everyday safety confidence. Lower trims do not get blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert, so those features are reserved for higher trims.
Should I buy a 2019 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.10% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 stands out for standard all-wheel drive, standard advanced safety features, and easy-to-use technology.
The bottom line: If you want a practical compact SUV with standard AWD, strong safety tech, and broad owner approval, the 2019 is the right year to focus on. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby model years and shop whichever one gives you the best combination of condition, equipment, and asking price.
