Why it stands out
The 2019 Nissan Maxima stands out as Nissan’s premier sedan, combining considerable power and style with a premium midsize feel. It has endured for eight generations, and its reputation has been built over the past three decades on powerful V6 engines and crisp handling. That mix gives it a more engaging character than many shoppers expect from a sedan in this class.
For 2019, Nissan refreshed the Maxima ever so mildly, updating its style, technology, and interior features. In testing, it also impressed with great ride quality and premium interior materials. Those strengths help make it appealing to buyers who want a comfortable, upscale-feeling sedan with a sporty edge.
The tradeoffs are worth noting, though. The Maxima’s technology is described as outdated, and its design may be polarizing. Even so, for drivers who value strong performance, good handling, and a plush cabin, the 2019 Nissan Maxima remains a distinctive choice.

Excellent power, especially in sport mode. Fuel economy is on the low end with lots of city driving. Good fit and finish; doesnt feel cheap. The leather seats are plush, but durable. Good noise level at high speeds. Very little vibration on rough roads. Odd rattle in the back which sounds like a loose seat lock, but the seats are secure. Rear factory tint is bubbling after 2.5 years.

Is the 2019 Nissan Maxima a good car?
Yes — the 4.75/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.5/10. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise the Maxima for its powerful performance, stylish appearance, comfortable interior, good handling, and plush leather seats. The refreshed 2019 model also leans into a more upscale cabin with premium interior materials and a great ride quality.
The trade-offs are clear: the technology is described as outdated, and the design may be polarizing. That matters most if you want a sedan that feels modern in every interface rather than one that prioritizes style and comfort.
For you, the Maxima makes the most sense if you want a premium-feeling midsize sedan with strong road manners and a more upscale personality than a typical family car. 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.

Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as dependable and trouble-free overall, with praise that points to a car you can count on for everyday use. The V6 powertrain is presented as smooth and durable-feeling, and the Maxima’s long-running reputation adds to the sense that it is built for long-term ownership.
The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the powertrain delivers immediate, smooth thrust and that the suspension balances comfort with nimble response. That combination supports the idea of a sedan that should feel settled and predictable over time.
If you buy used, your main long-term risk is less about the core driving hardware and more about condition, maintenance history, and how well the car has aged cosmetically and electronically.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Nissan Maxima?
At 51.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has any signs of prior bodywork or uneven panel fit. Focus on wear items, interior condition, and whether the technology and trim features still work as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S skips navigation, while higher trims add more upscale materials and features; the Platinum Reserve brings semi-aniline saddle-colored leather with diamond quilting and bronze-colored trim.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 300 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive; fuel economy is rated at 20 mpg city, 30 highway, and 24 combined.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-emergency braking, a driver-attention monitor, and knee airbags for both front occupants; the SV adds blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, the SR adds pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning, and Platinum models add reverse emergency braking.
- Infotainment: Most trims get an updated navigation system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a customizable home screen, a high-speed USB-C port, and NissanConnect remote services; the base S does not come with navigation.
Which 2019 Nissan Maxima trim should I buy?
The 2019 Nissan Maxima is offered in 6 trim levels: S, SV, SR, SL, Platinum, Platinum Reserve.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, but it skips navigation, so it makes the most sense only if you want the lowest-cost way into the Maxima and can live without some convenience tech.
- SV: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control while keeping the Maxima’s core comfort and upscale feel intact.
- SR: Choose this if you want the sportier setup, including a firmer ride and added driver-assistance features such as pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning.
- SL: This is the better pick if you want a more comfort-focused Maxima with a more premium feel than the lower trims.
- Platinum: Step here if you want a richer luxury experience and the added safety benefit of reverse emergency braking.
- Platinum Reserve: This is the top luxury choice, with the most upscale interior treatment and the strongest premium presentation.
The safety-package trim note is simple: the SV adds blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, the SR adds pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning, and Platinum models add reverse emergency braking.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Nissan Maxima?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.
- Deal availability: 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 603 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.47% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 51.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,743.47, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Nissan Maxima's resale value?
The current average of $17,193 sits slightly below last year's $18,783.
That softer pricing suggests the Maxima has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation, which can help if you buy at the right number. If you keep the car in strong condition and maintain it well, you may be better positioned when it comes time to sell.
The market still rewards a sedan with a strong reputation for comfort, style, and performance, especially when owner satisfaction remains high. That can help support demand later, even if the segment itself is competitive.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Nissan Maxima safe?
The Maxima is an IIHS Top Safety Pick, and it scored five-star overall ratings from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for only the front-passenger side in a frontal crash and overall for the side-impact pole test.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes forward-emergency braking, a driver-attention monitor, and knee airbags for both the driver and front passenger. The SV adds blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, the SR adds pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning, and Platinum models add reverse emergency braking.
One important caveat is that the Maxima does not offer ProPilot Assist, so you do not get Nissan’s semi-automated highway driving suite here.
Should I buy a 2019 Nissan Maxima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 51.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.47% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 refresh brings updated style, technology, and interior features.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $17,526, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $17,193 average.
- It adds a more spacious, comfort-focused feel with standard advanced safety features.
The bottom line: buy the 2019 if you want the better value and are comfortable with its older tech and styling. If you can stretch for the 2020, you get a slightly newer take with a more spacious, comfort-oriented character.
