For 2019, Mercedes-Benz has completely redesigned the Sprinter. It competes with the Ford Transit and Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana twins.

The Sprinter features a tall profile, a commanding road height, and a short, sloped hood. The standard look includes matte black bumpers, but for an extra charge, Mercedes-Benz will paint them for you.

The Sprinter Passenger Van is available in two trims, 1500 and 2500. Shoppers can choose between two wheelbase lengths and two engine options. The turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder gas-powered engine makes 188 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque and is capable of towing 5,000 pounds. The traditional diesel option carries over from last year, a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that puts out 188 hp and 325 lb-ft. As before, you can choose from standard rear-wheel (RWD) or optional four-wheel drive (4WD). Payload capacity ranges from 2,941 to 3,341 pounds with the 144-inch wheelbase. With the 170-inch wheelbase, it ranges from 3,067 to 3,307 pounds.

The Sprinter’s biggest upgrades are in the cabin. You now have the choice of a 7.0- or 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, called Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX). Drivers can operate it via touch, voice, or steering wheel controls. It also comes with a feature called PRO connect, which combines with a smartphone app to let fleet managers track vehicles, set operating restrictions, and receive reports on driving habits.

Driving a tall, heavy vehicle isn’t always easy, but Mercedes-Benz lessens the burden with a suite of safety options. Among them are automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, attention assist, a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition, LED lighting, and lane-keeping assist.

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter takes a familiar package and improves upon it.
