CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 1,977 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,979, 33.3% of 2019 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Mazda CX-5 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.
65.8% of 2019 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 stands out for blending style, safety, and driving enjoyment in a way that helped it win over buyers year after year. Mazda updated it just one year into its second generation, and the changes focused on the qualities that matter most to many shoppers: improved handling through an updated version of its G-Vectoring Control system, added smartphone connectivity with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and more power from a turbocharged engine in two new top-tier trims, the Grand Touring Reserve and Signature.
That combination makes the 2019 CX-5 appealing if you want a compact SUV that feels more polished than basic transportation. Its standard advanced safety features and strong value add to the appeal, while the stylish design and luxury-like interior impression are recurring strengths. The tradeoffs are worth noting, though: the base engine is described as underwhelming, and the technology can be unintuitive. Some owners also wished for higher-end touches such as a panoramic sunroof and more flexible rear-seat packaging.

This is a great car! Has android and Apple car play. Sirius XM ready. Grand Touring has all the creature comforts. Curve adaptive headlights improve nighttime driving visibility. Seats are ergonomic. Very good on gas! Decently powerful for a 4 cylinder. Comfortable seats. AWD models have great traction in wet. Havent driven in snow with it yet, but will be soon.

| Year-Round Low | $18,195 |
| Year-Round High | $19,436 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,435 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.39% |
Prices have softened 2.39% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,971 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2019 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.83/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its value, luxury feel, great handling, impressive fuel efficiency, and interior quality. The review summary also points to strong safety features, which lines up with the car’s broader appeal.
The main trade-offs are the unintuitive technology and the underwhelming base engine. That matters most if you want a compact SUV that feels polished in everyday use but still need to be comfortable with a less exciting entry-level setup.
The CX-5 is a strong fit if you want a compact SUV that feels more premium than basic transportation, especially if style and driving enjoyment matter to you. 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.
Is the 2019 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle that feels reliable, dependable, and trouble-free enough to inspire strong satisfaction over time. It also highlights the CX-5’s value and safety features, which usually matter to shoppers planning to keep a vehicle for the long haul.
The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the CX-5 as a strong all-around package with solid everyday usability and good long-term appeal. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about a known mechanical weakness and more about choosing a well-kept example with the right equipment and condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Mazda CX-5?
At 65.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, panel alignment, and signs of prior repair. It also makes sense to focus on the condition of the cabin and electronics, since the technology is one of the CX-5’s weaker points.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Sport trim includes LED headlights, a push-button ignition, a 7-inch touchscreen, and a strong safety suite, while Touring adds keyless entry, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear climate vents, heated front seats, two more USB ports, and an upgraded stereo. Grand Touring adds adaptive headlights, LED fog lights, leather upholstery, an upgraded driver display, and navigation, while Grand Touring Reserve and Signature bring the turbocharged engine and more luxury features. The base trim is the one most likely to feel light on convenience and connectivity.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder pairs with a 6-speed automatic and makes 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. The Grand Touring Reserve and Signature use a turbocharged version with up to 250 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, or 227 hp on lower-octane fuel.
- Safety package: Mazda’s i-ActiveSense suite is standard across the range and includes automatic headlights, wipers, and high beams; lane-departure warning and assist; adaptive cruise control; and forward-collision warning and mitigation. The 360-degree camera and parking sensors are reserved for the Signature trim.
- Infotainment: The infotainment system uses a 7-inch touchscreen, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard above the base Sport trim. MazdaConnect is responsive, but the scroll-wheel interface may not suit everyone.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 25 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined. The turbocharged setup is rated at 22 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined.
Which 2019 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it already brings LED headlights, a push-button ignition, a 7-inch touchscreen, and standard safety tech. It makes sense if you want the lowest price, but it’s also the trim most affected by the lack of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
- Touring: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds key convenience and comfort upgrades, including keyless entry, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear vents, heated front seats, extra USB ports, and an upgraded stereo.
- Grand Touring: This trim adds a more upscale feel with leather upholstery, adaptive headlights, LED fog lights, an upgraded driver display, and navigation. It’s a good pick if you want more polish without jumping to the turbo models.
- Grand Touring Reserve: This is where the more powerful turbocharged engine arrives, along with a head-up display, power-folding mirrors, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a windshield wiper de-icer. It suits you if performance and cold-weather comfort matter.
- Signature: This is the most luxurious version, adding ambient cabin lighting, upgraded leather upholstery, real wood trim, a 360-degree camera, and front and rear parking sensors. It’s the right choice if you want the most premium CX-5 experience.
The safety suite is standard across the lineup, while the 360-degree camera and parking sensors are limited to the Signature trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards comparison shopping rather than impulse buying.
- Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,971 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.39% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,195, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $18,972 sits slightly below last year's $19,435.
That kind of price movement suggests the CX-5 has softened a bit in the near term, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper what a future seller can expect. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you’ll be better positioned to preserve value.
The model’s broad appeal, strong owner satisfaction, and premium-leaning reputation should help support demand over time. Still, resale will depend heavily on trim, mileage, condition, and whether the vehicle has a clean history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 earns Top Safety Pick recognition from IIHS and five-star ratings in nearly every NHTSA category, with a four-star rating in rollover.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Mazda’s i-ActiveSense suite is standard across the range and includes automatic headlights, wipers, and high beams; lane-departure warning and assist; adaptive cruise control; and forward-collision warning and mitigation. That means you do not need to move up the trim ladder for the core driver-assistance package.
The main caveat is the rollover result, which is the one weaker point in an otherwise strong safety profile. The child safety anchors also earned an Acceptable rating from IIHS, so that is worth keeping in mind if you’re shopping with family use in mind.
Should I buy a 2019 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.39% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Mazda added Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a turbocharged engine option this year.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $16,760, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $18,972 average.
- It emphasizes style and driving enjoyment with a more premium feel.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $20,272, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $18,972 average.
- It leans further into premium materials and comfort.
The bottom line: The 2019 is the best all-around choice if you want the updated tech, strong safety, and a broad range of trims. If your priority is saving money, the 2018 is the better value play, while the 2020 makes sense if you’re willing to pay more for a slightly newer take on the same formula.
