CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 2,136 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,925, 35.2% of 2019 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Mazda CX-5 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.
66.8% of 2019 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 stands out for blending style, safety, and driving enjoyment in a way that helped it win over buyers year after year. Mazda updated it just one year into its second generation, and the changes focused on the qualities that matter most to many shoppers: improved handling through an updated version of its G-Vectoring Control system, added smartphone connectivity with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and more power from a turbocharged engine in two new top-tier trims, the Grand Touring Reserve and Signature.
That combination makes the 2019 CX-5 appealing if you want a compact SUV that feels more polished than basic transportation. Its standard advanced safety features and strong value add to the appeal, while the stylish design and luxury-like interior impression are recurring strengths. The tradeoffs are worth noting, though: the base engine is described as underwhelming, and the technology can be unintuitive. Some owners also wished for higher-end touches such as a panoramic sunroof and more flexible rear-seat packaging.

Very good on gas! Decently powerful for a 4 cylinder. Comfortable seats. AWD models have great traction in wet. Havent driven in snow with it yet, but will be soon.

Is the 2019 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.83/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its value, luxury feel, great handling, and impressive fuel efficiency. They also highlight the interior quality and safety features, which line up with the CX-5’s premium-leaning positioning.
The main trade-offs are the unintuitive technology and the underwhelming base engine. That matters most if you want a compact SUV that feels polished and engaging rather than merely practical.
The CX-5 fits shoppers who want a stylish compact SUV with a more upscale feel than basic transportation. Good and great deals account for 35.0% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with repeated praise for value, safety, and the kind of quality that makes the vehicle easy to count on over time. That same long-term confidence is reinforced by the strong satisfaction around its interior quality and fuel efficiency.
The expert review also supports that impression by describing the CX-5 as a well-rounded, polished crossover with strong everyday usability. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about core reliability and more about whether the specific vehicle has been maintained well and equipped with the features you want.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Mazda CX-5?
At 66.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the vehicle’s equipment matches the trim you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Sport trim includes LED headlights, a push-button ignition, a 7-inch touchscreen, and a strong safety suite, while the Touring adds keyless entry, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear climate vents, heated front seats, two more USB ports, and an upgraded stereo. The Grand Touring adds adaptive headlights, LED fog lights, leather upholstery, an upgraded driver display, and navigation, while the Grand Touring Reserve and Signature add the turbocharged engine and more luxury features. The base trim is the one most likely to feel light on convenience and connectivity.
- Powertrain: Most trims use a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic and 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. The Grand Touring Reserve and Signature use a turbocharged version with up to 250 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, or 227 horsepower on lower-octane fuel.
- Safety package: Mazda’s i-ActiveSense suite is standard across the range and includes automatic headlights, wipers, and high beams; lane-departure warning and assist; adaptive cruise control; and forward-collision warning and mitigation. The top-tier Signature adds the 360-degree camera and parking sensors.
- Infotainment: The CX-5 uses MazdaConnect with a 7-inch touchscreen, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard above the base Sport trim. The system is attractive and responsive, though the scroll-wheel interface may not suit everyone.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 25 mpg city, 31 highway, and 28 combined. The turbocharged setup is rated at 22 mpg city, 27 highway, and 24 combined.
Which 2019 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-5 experience with LED headlights, a push-button ignition, a 7-inch touchscreen, and standard safety tech. It makes sense if you want the lowest price, but it is the trim most affected by the lack of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds key convenience and comfort upgrades, including keyless entry, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear vents, heated front seats, extra USB ports, and an upgraded stereo. If you want a balanced daily driver, this is the trim to target first.
- Grand Touring: This trim adds a more upscale feel with adaptive headlights, LED fog lights, leather upholstery, an upgraded driver display, and navigation. It suits you if you want a more premium cabin without jumping to the turbocharged models.
- Grand Touring Reserve: This is where the more powerful turbocharged engine arrives, along with a head-up display, power-folding mirrors, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a windshield wiper de-icer. Choose this if performance and comfort matter more than price.
- Signature: This is the luxury-leaning top trim, adding ambient cabin lighting, upgraded leather upholstery, real wood trim, a 360-degree camera, and front and rear parking sensors. It is the right pick if you want the most upscale CX-5 experience.
The safety suite is standard across the lineup, while the Signature is the only trim that adds the 360-degree camera and parking sensors.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,127 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.12% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,195, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $18,928 sits slightly below last year's $19,338.
That softer pricing suggests the CX-5 has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can help you if you plan to sell later because it may broaden the pool of interested shoppers. At the same time, the current market shows that values have eased rather than surged, so you should expect resale strength to depend more on condition, mileage, and equipment than on broad market appreciation.
Well-kept examples should still hold appeal because the CX-5 has a strong reputation for style, safety, and driving enjoyment. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 earns Top Safety Pick recognition from IIHS and five-star ratings in nearly every category from NHTSA, with a four-star rating in rollover.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Mazda’s i-ActiveSense suite is standard across the range and includes automatic headlights, wipers, and high beams; lane-departure warning and assist; adaptive cruise control; and forward-collision warning and mitigation. The top-tier Signature adds the 360-degree camera and parking sensors.
The main caveat is the rollover result, which is the one weaker point in an otherwise strong safety profile. If safety is a top priority, the standard driver-assistance coverage is a major strength, but the Signature’s extra camera and parking sensors add useful low-speed confidence.
Should I buy a 2019 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.12% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Mazda added Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a turbocharged top-end engine this year.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $16,873, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $18,928 average.
- It emphasizes style and driving enjoyment with a more premium feel.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $20,257, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $18,928 average.
- It leans further into premium materials and comfort.
The bottom line: The 2019 is the sweet spot if you want the updated tech and stronger feature set without paying newer-model pricing. If your budget is tighter, the 2018 can still make sense, but you give up some of the improvements that make the 2019 easier to recommend.
