CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Ford Explorer

Summary
With 5,705 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,916.00, 30.6% of 2019 Ford Explorers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Ford Explorer 4.6 / 5 stars.
71.4% of 2019 Explorer models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Ford Explorer stands out as a roomy, family-oriented midsize SUV with a broad mix of powertrains and a layout that still feels practical for everyday use. It rides on Ford’s D4 platform, which gave this generation a crossover-like character, and it was available with rear-wheel drive by default, with all-wheel drive offered as an option. That setup helped make it more car-like to drive than earlier Explorers, while still preserving the utility buyers expect from the nameplate.
Powertrain choice is one of the Explorer’s biggest differentiators. In 2019, buyers could get a 290-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, a 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder, or a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 twin-turbo. The available 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 was the performance standout, and the generation also offered a hybrid in other model years, though not for 2019. Ford also gave this generation modern infotainment and safety equipment, including SYNC, Ford Co-Pilot360 features, and available conveniences such as heated and ventilated front seats, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and adaptive cruise control.
At the same time, the 2019 Explorer is not without compromises. The source material notes that this generation rarely ranked at the top of its class in any one area, and reliability has been a recurring concern for the model line. Even so, it remains appealing for shoppers who want a used SUV with strong engine choices, available all-wheel drive, and a familiar, versatile cabin.

Really great. Lots of high tech features. Looks nice and is easy to handle. I would prefer the ST model for even more features and power. However for now, this one fit our budget.

How much does the 2019 Ford Explorer cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,924 |
| Year-Round Low | $16,921.87 |
| Year-Round High | $19,165.95 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,171 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.72% |
Prices have softened 11.72% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 5,863 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $16,921.87, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2019 Ford Explorer a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.6/5, which points to strong overall satisfaction. Reviewers repeatedly praise the value for money, powerful engine options, and advanced features. For you, that makes it a compelling choice if you want a roomy, family-oriented midsize SUV with practical everyday usability and a broad mix of powertrains. With 30.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. In owner feedback, reliability is called out positively alongside the vehicle’s dependable feel and trouble-free ownership experience, even as some shoppers note minor comfort and camera-screen complaints. For used buyers, that means the biggest long-term ownership risk is less about day-to-day satisfaction and more about making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been well maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Ford Explorer?
At 71.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with prior damage. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially on body condition, alignment, and signs of uneven wear. Focus your test drive on how the SUV feels in everyday use, since comfort-related concerns can matter as much as cosmetic condition.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Ford Explorer?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 5,863 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.72% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,921.87, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $16,924 sits slightly below last year's $19,171.
That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable entry point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, condition and maintenance history will matter even more because buyers will have plenty of comparable listings to choose from. A well-kept example should still hold appeal thanks to steady shopper interest in roomy, family-friendly SUVs.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.72% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $22,141, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $16,924 average.
- It brings an all-new chassis with more technology and hybrid and high-performance powertrains.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2019 if you want the better value and are comfortable shopping carefully for condition and history. If you want the newer redesign, more technology, and a more modern feel, the 2020 is the stronger upgrade, but you’ll pay notably more. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2019 is the more practical path; for shoppers prioritizing newer hardware, the 2020 is worth the premium.
