CarGurus Analysis: 2019 BMW X5
overall

Summary
With 200 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,559, 28.0% of 2019 BMW X5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 BMW X5 4.56 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
91.0% of 2019 BMW X5 listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 BMW X5 stands out as a midsize crossover that still leans hard into BMW’s long-running idea of car-like handling in an SUV form. It is an all-new X5 with more room and improved power, and the redesign gives it a bigger kidney grille with active shutters. BMW also stretched it 1 inch longer, 3 inches wider, and 1 inch taller than the previous model, though the changes are subtle enough that you have to look closely to notice them.
Inside, the 2019 X5 brings a redesigned interior with an updated version of the iDrive system and a suite of Level 2 autonomous technology. That combination gives it a more modern feel, but the tech still lags the segment’s best, so it is not the most advanced choice in its class. Even so, the X5 remains appealing for buyers who want a luxury SUV that emphasizes driving enjoyment, comfort, and a strong overall blend of utility and performance.

The car is a good value. I love all the features, the only must have that was missing was the seat massager and a few other accessories but overall love it.

Tires were worn down and even peeling off on the front right tire. Wheels are aftermarket. Car was clean on the inside, but nor on the outside and faded on plastic parts of vehicle. Compared to others like it, price was high for its condition.

Over the years, we have had an E53, E70, F15 and now a G05 xdrive X5. All have been fantastic vehicles to own. The new G05 is by far, the most technology packed one of the bunch. Great power, performance and handling make it a pleasure to own and drive. While expensive, the way the SAV looks and drives continues to outweigh the cost. Very enjoyable all around!

User feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience for many drivers, with praise centered on comfort, performance, and luxury features. At the same time, some owners mention electrical issues and a limited back seat, which are the kinds of concerns you should take seriously when shopping used.
The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the engine and transmission combination is a major strength, with smooth power delivery and a well-sorted automatic that helps the X5 feel composed in everyday driving. The cost-effectiveness notes also suggest that even the base setup gives you a strong powertrain, which is a good sign for long-term satisfaction if you want to avoid chasing higher trims.
If you buy one used, focus on service records and make sure any electrical or comfort-related complaints have been addressed before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 BMW X5?
At 73.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has any accident history or incomplete service documentation. Pay close attention to how the electronics, driver-assistance features, and cabin systems operate, since those are the kinds of areas that can become expensive if they need repair. It’s also smart to check rear-seat space and overall interior condition, because owner feedback suggests those are common pressure points.
Key things to evaluate:
Trim level: The xDrive40i comes with all-wheel drive, adaptive LED headlights and foglights, a panoramic sunroof, an adaptive suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, faux-leather upholstery with heated front seats, a power liftgate, ambient lighting, and a digital gauge cluster with a 12.3-inch secondary touchscreen. The M Sport design package adds unique 20-inch wheels, an adaptive M suspension tune, an M steering wheel and aero kit, upgraded leather, four-zone auto climate controls, keyless entry, satellite radio, and roof rails. The xDrive50i adds the V8 engine, upgraded multi-contour front seats with real leather upholstery, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon stereo. The best-value choice is the xDrive40i, since it already brings the core luxury and performance mix without pushing you into the pricier V8 setup.
Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder in the xDrive40i or a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 in the xDrive50i. The inline six is described as smooth and consistently strong, while the eight-speed automatic is praised for its smooth shifting and improved efficiency. The xDrive40i is also tied to EPA-estimated 20 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined.
Safety package: The standard safety suite includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert. The base setup already brings a strong safety package, so you do not need to jump to a higher trim just to get meaningful driver assistance.
Infotainment: The cabin includes an updated iDrive system, a digital gauge cluster, and a 12.3-inch secondary touchscreen. The available tech package adds a head-up display, wireless charging, enhanced USB and Bluetooth connectivity, a rear-view camera with 3D view, gesture control, and automatic parallel parking via Parking Assistant Plus. The system is described as less advanced than the class leaders, so test it carefully before you buy.
Fuel efficiency: The xDrive40i is rated at 20 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined.
Which 2019 BMW X5 trim should I buy?
The 2019 BMW X5 is offered in 2 trim levels: xDrive40i, xDrive50i.
Here's the short version:
xDrive40i: This is the trim to target if you want the best balance of price, performance, and equipment. It already includes the core luxury features, the strong turbocharged inline-six powertrain, and the standard safety suite, so you get the X5 experience without paying extra for the V8.
xDrive50i: Choose this if you want the extra punch of the turbocharged V8 and are willing to pay more for it. It adds more power, real leather upholstery, upgraded front seats, and a premium stereo, but it makes more sense for buyers who care most about performance and top-end equipment than value.
The safety package is already strong on the xDrive40i, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the important driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 BMW X5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.
- Deal availability: 36.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,817 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.08% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 73.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,610, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 BMW X5's resale value?
The current average of $24,610 sits slightly below last year's $27,990.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained. If you keep service records and avoid accident history, you give yourself a better chance of standing out when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 BMW X5 safe?
The 2019 BMW X5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS and a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover tests and five-star ratings in side crash tests.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety suite includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert. That gives you a strong baseline of driver assistance even before you start looking at options.
One caveat to keep in mind is that the brake-by-wire setup can feel a little unfamiliar, and the expert review notes that stopping distances with the M Sport brakes are longer than a key rival’s. That does not make the X5 unsafe, but it is a reminder to inspect brake condition carefully on any used example.
Should I buy a 2019 BMW X5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 36.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.08% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 brings an all-new redesign with more room, improved power, and a modernized interior with updated iDrive and Level 2 autonomous technology.
The bottom line: If you want the redesigned X5 with strong performance, a comfortable cabin, and a market that has already softened, the 2019 is a smart year to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can still shop carefully within this year’s listings and focus on accident-free examples with clean service histories.
