Summary
With 653 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,158.00, 30.0% of 2018 Volkswagen Passats for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Volkswagen Passat 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat stands out by adding more power and a bit of long-missing sportiness to Volkswagen’s midsize sedan. According to the test-drive summary, Volkswagen fitted it with an upgraded 4-cylinder engine and introduced a new GT trim that brings a V6 and a sport suspension. That combination gives the Passat a broader appeal than before, especially for buyers who want a family sedan with a little more character.
Even with those updates, the Passat is described as a competitive option in the midsize segment, though it is also said to be getting a little long in the tooth. The base S trim can now be equipped with advanced safety systems, including blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a forward-collision warning system with automatic emergency braking. Owner feedback also points to the Passat’s roomy interior, comfortable seating, and impressive trunk space, along with a smooth ride and strong value, while some drivers note the lack of features such as memory seats and a HomeLink system and mention that the steering can feel soft.

I have the SE Trim level. Roomy sedan that fits two adults up front and two kids plus a car seat in the back. On top of that it has the pep and acceleration of a sports car. Smooth ride yet fun to drive. The perfect all around combination.

You get a lot of bang for your buck with the VR6 in this surprisingly roomy sedan. The rear seat and trunk room is impressive. Pros - VR6 is powerful and pulls strong in any gear at any speed. It also has a wonderful throaty exhaust note. Put a Borla exhaust on this and you gain about 30 bhp and wow does it sound mean! - LED headlights are wonderful for night time visibility. - Tons of trunk space for a mid-sized sedan. - Handles well through turns with only minimum body roll. - Lots of standard safety features - AEB, Rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitor, etc. Cons - Soft steering - Skinny tires, need more rubber on the road to use all that horsepower without chirping or spinning when the lead foot is unleashed. -

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.71/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise the roomy interior, comfortable seating, impressive trunk space, smooth ride, and strong value. The overview also points to a family-sedan use case with more character than before, thanks to the added power and sportier GT setup.
With 30.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback repeatedly highlights the Passat as a value-focused sedan that feels comfortable and easy to live with, and it also points to a smooth ride and roomy cabin that support everyday dependability. The expert summary reinforces that it remains a competitive option in the midsize segment, while the performance notes describe the new base engine as smoother through the rev range and the automatic transmission as drama-free.
The cost-effectiveness notes also support low-stress ownership by emphasizing the model’s competitive pricing. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that age and mileage can expose wear items, so condition and maintenance history matter more than the badge.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?
At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on body alignment, paint consistency, tire wear, and any signs that safety systems or electronics were repaired after an incident. Because the Passat is getting a little long in the tooth, condition matters more than mileage alone.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim includes automatic headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, a rear-view camera, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 5-inch touchscreen, but it lacks App-Connect for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Higher trims add features such as heated seats, a larger touchscreen, keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, adaptive cruise control, and more upscale lighting and audio equipment.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder brings 174 hp, 184 lb-ft of torque, and an estimated 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined. The available 3.6-liter V6 makes 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and returns 19/28/22.
- Safety package: The available Driver Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The GT comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, while lane-departure warning is limited to the SEL Premium.
- Infotainment: Most trims include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while the base S does not. The system uses a 5-inch touchscreen on the base trim and a 6.3-inch unit on the R-Line, with an 8-speaker upgrade and navigation available in the Technology Package.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined. The V6 returns 19/28/22.
Which 2018 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 5 trim levels: S, R-Line, SE, SEL Premium, GT.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the essentials at the lowest price, including a rear-view camera, dual-zone climate control, and a power driver’s seat. It makes sense if you want the most affordable Passat and are willing to live without App-Connect unless you add the available Driver Assistance package.
- R-Line: This trim adds heated seats and mirrors, V-Tex leatherette upholstery, a larger touchscreen, satellite and HD Radio, and more aggressive styling. It’s a good step up if you want more comfort and a nicer cabin without jumping too far in price.
- SE: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, rear air vents, adaptive cruise control, and other convenience upgrades while staying below the top trim. If you want the most balanced mix of features and price, start here.
- SEL Premium: This is the most upscale Passat, with real leather, power-folding mirrors, a power passenger seat, memory seating, an automatic parallel parking system, and a lane-departure warning system. Choose it if you want the most comfort and tech the model offers.
- GT: This is the enthusiast pick, adding a V6, sport suspension, better-sounding exhaust, 19-inch wheels, and distinctive styling touches. It suits you best if you want the most character and the strongest performance.
The safety package is available on the base S, while lane-departure warning is reserved for the SEL Premium.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 679 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.67% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,942.17, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $12,222 sits slightly below last year's $12,820.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, that also means resale gains may be limited unless you keep the car in especially strong condition and choose a desirable trim. Well-kept examples with the right equipment should still attract interest because the Passat continues to appeal to shoppers who want space, comfort, and value.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat safe?
It earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, but it also receives Marginal ratings on the passenger side in the small-overlap front crash test and headlight tests, which keeps it from earning a Top Safety Pick title from the IIHS.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Passat includes plenty of airbags, including side curtains for front and rear passengers. The available Driver Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and the GT comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. Lane-departure warning is limited to the SEL Premium.
The main caveat is that the IIHS results and average braking distances keep safety from being a standout strength, so you should pay close attention to equipment level and condition when shopping used.
Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.67% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 adds an upgraded 4-cylinder engine and a new GT trim with a V6 and sport suspension.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $10,686, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $12,222 average.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring, App-Connect, and forward-collision warning with autonomous braking above the base S.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger engine lineup and the added GT trim, the 2018 is the better pick. If your priority is spending less and getting a well-equipped, comfort-first sedan, the 2017 is the more budget-friendly path.
