CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Volkswagen Passat
overall

Summary
With 678 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,329, 30.4% of 2018 Volkswagen Passats for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Volkswagen Passat 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
54.4% of 2018 Passat models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat stands out as a midsize sedan that adds some much-needed sportiness to a long-running formula. Volkswagen gave it a more-powerful base engine, and the lineup also gained a new GT trim with a V6 and a sport suspension. That combination makes this Passat more interesting than a purely practical family sedan, while still keeping it competitive in the segment.
It also became more appealing on the safety front, since blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a forward-collision warning system with automatic emergency braking could now be added to the base S trim. At the same time, the Passat was described as getting a little long in the tooth, so its appeal is less about cutting-edge freshness and more about offering a familiar sedan with useful updates.
Owners of the 2018 Volkswagen Passat also praised its roomy interior, comfortable seating, and impressive trunk space, along with its value, peppy acceleration, and smooth ride. Some noted the absence of features such as memory seats and a home link system, and a few commented that the steering felt soft.

I have the SE Trim level. Roomy sedan that fits two adults up front and two kids plus a car seat in the back. On top of that it has the pep and acceleration of a sports car. Smooth ride yet fun to drive. The perfect all around combination.

You get a lot of bang for your buck with the VR6 in this surprisingly roomy sedan. The rear seat and trunk room is impressive. Pros - VR6 is powerful and pulls strong in any gear at any speed. It also has a wonderful throaty exhaust note. Put a Borla exhaust on this and you gain about 30 bhp and wow does it sound mean! - LED headlights are wonderful for night time visibility. - Tons of trunk space for a mid-sized sedan. - Handles well through turns with only minimum body roll. - Lots of standard safety features - AEB, Rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitor, etc. Cons - Soft steering - Skinny tires, need more rubber on the road to use all that horsepower without chirping or spinning when the lead foot is unleashed. -

The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with many drivers emphasizing its roomy cabin, comfortable ride, and strong value. That kind of feedback usually matters most when you want a used sedan you can count on for routine commuting and family duty.
The expert evaluation also supports that impression by describing the Passat as a competitive, familiar sedan with useful updates rather than a risky redesign. The cost-effectiveness commentary reinforces that it stays attractive against pricier rivals.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright reliability drama and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn down by age or heavy use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?
At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven panel gaps, tire wear, or paint mismatch. Focus on overall condition, because the best used examples will stand out more by how they’ve been cared for than by mileage alone.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim includes automatic headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, a rear-view camera, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 5-inch touchscreen, but it lacks App-Connect. Higher trims add features such as heated side mirrors and seats, a larger touchscreen, keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, real leather, and a memory seat system.
- Powertrain: The standard engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 174 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, and it returns 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined. A 3.6-liter V6 is also available with 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, along with fuel economy of 19/28/22.
- Safety package: Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking can be added to the base S trim through the Driver Assistance package. Adaptive cruise control is not available on every trim, and lane-departure warning is limited to the SEL Premium.
- Infotainment: Nearly all trims include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while the base S does not. The system uses a 5-inch touchscreen on the base trim and a 6.3-inch touchscreen on the R-Line, with an 8-speaker infotainment upgrade available on the SE Technology Package.
- Fuel efficiency: The base 2.0-liter engine is rated at 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined, while the V6 returns 19/28/22.
Which 2018 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 5 trim levels: S, R-Line, SE, SEL Premium, GT.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the value starting point if you want the lowest entry price and the core Passat experience, but you should strongly consider the Driver Assistance package because it adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
- R-Line: This trim adds heated side mirrors and seats, V-Tex leatherette upholstery, a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, HD Radio, and more aggressive styling, making it a good step up if you want more comfort and visual presence without jumping to the top of the range.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it keeps the R-Line’s equipment while adding keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, rear air vents, and adaptive cruise control.
- SEL Premium: Choose this if you want the most upscale Passat experience, with real leather, a power passenger seat, power-folding mirrors, a memory seat system, an automatic parallel parking system, and a lane-departure warning system.
- GT: This is the choice for you if you want the most character, since it adds the V6, sport suspension, better-sounding exhaust, 19-inch wheels, and unique styling touches.
The safety package is a smart add on the base S, but the SE is the trim that best balances equipment and value.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards comparison shopping more than impulse buying.
- Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 684 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.30% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,941, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $12,410 sits slightly below last year's $12,834.
That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper what you recover later as a seller. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you can reduce the impact of that softer trend.
The year-round range also matters: values have stayed fairly tight, which usually points to a stable but not rapidly appreciating used-car market. For a future seller, that means condition, mileage, and trim choice will matter more than hoping for a big price rebound.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat safe?
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat earns five-star ratings from NHTSA, but Marginal ratings on the passenger side in the small-overlap front crash test and headlight tests keep it from earning a Top Safety Pick title from the IIHS.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Passat includes plenty of airbags, including side curtains for front and rear passengers. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking can be added to the base S trim through the Driver Assistance package, and those systems come standard on the GT.
The main caveat is the weaker IIHS showing, so if safety is a top priority, you should pay close attention to trim and equipment rather than assuming every used example is equally equipped.
Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Volkswagen added a more powerful base engine and a new GT trim with a V6 and sport suspension.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $10,610, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $12,410 average.
- It emphasizes comfort, value, and a spacious interior.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2018 is the better pick because it brings more power, more character, and useful safety updates. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2017 is the better value path, especially if you find one in clean condition with the equipment you want.
