How much does the 2018 Volkswagen Passat cost?

Prices have softened 1.67% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat a good car?

Yes — the 2018 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.7/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.

Owners consistently praise the roomy interior, comfortable seating, and impressive trunk space, and they also highlight its peppy acceleration and smooth ride. For you, that means the Passat fits well if you want a roomy mainstream sedan with a little more character than the average family car. It also remains a competitive midsize option, even if it is getting a little long in the tooth.

There are 34.7% good and great deals in the market, which suggests you can still find attractive pricing if you shop carefully.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling sedan with strong everyday usability, especially if you value a roomy cabin, comfortable seating, and a car that feels easy to live with over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Passat remains a competitive choice in the segment, which supports the idea that it can be a sensible long-term buy.

For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and equipped the way you want.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?

At 57.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, safety equipment, and interior condition. Because the market includes a sizable number of cars with prior incidents, you’ll want to focus on how well the car was repaired and whether any wear suggests harder use. It also makes sense to compare trim equipment closely so you know which convenience and safety features are actually present.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S trim includes automatic headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, a rear-view camera, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 5-inch touchscreen, but it lacks App-Connect for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Higher trims add features such as heated side mirrors and seats, V-Tex leatherette upholstery, a larger touchscreen, keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, and real leather on the top trim.
• Powertrain: The standard engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 174 hp and an 8% efficiency improvement, while the available 3.6-liter V6 delivers 280 hp and a more energetic driving feel.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control is not included, and lane-departure warning is available only on the SEL Premium.
• Infotainment: The base S uses a 5-inch touchscreen, while other trims get App-Connect with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Higher trims add a 6.3-inch touchscreen, and the available technology package brings an upgraded 8-speaker stereo and infotainment system.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter engine is rated at 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway, while the V6 returns 19/28/22.

Which 2018 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2018 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 5 trim levels: S, R-Line, SE, SEL Premium, GT.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value starting point if you want the lowest entry price and the core Passat experience. It gives you the essentials, but you’ll want the Driver Assistance package if safety tech matters to you, and you should note that App-Connect is not standard here.
• R-Line: This trim adds heated side mirrors and seats, V-Tex leatherette upholstery, a larger touchscreen, and more aggressive styling. It’s a good step up if you want more comfort and a more upscale look without jumping all the way to the top trim.
• SE: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it keeps the R-Line’s equipment while adding keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, rear air vents, and adaptive cruise control. It also gives you a strong mix of convenience and everyday usability.
• SEL Premium: This is the most feature-rich comfort trim, with real leather, power-folding mirrors, a power passenger seat, an automatic parallel parking system, lane-departure warning, and a memory seat system. Choose it if you want the most complete Passat experience.
• GT: This is the choice for you if you want the most character. It adds the V6, sport suspension, better-sounding exhaust, 19-inch wheels, and unique styling touches, making it the most engaging Passat in the lineup.

The base S trim can be equipped with the Driver Assistance package, which adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards comparison shopping more than impulse buying.

• Deal availability: 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 692 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.67% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 57.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,943, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $12,182 sits slightly below last year's $12,389.

That softer pricing suggests the Passat is in a buyer-friendly phase right now, which can help you if you’re shopping used but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that steady demand matters more than short-term price movement, and this model still has enough appeal to remain relevant in the midsize sedan market.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat safe?

The 2018 Volkswagen Passat earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, but Marginal ratings on the passenger side in the small-overlap front crash test and headlight tests keep it from earning a Top Safety Pick title from the IIHS.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The Passat includes plenty of airbags, including side curtains for front and rear passengers. The available Driver Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and those systems can be added to the base S trim. The GT comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, while lane-departure warning is reserved for the SEL Premium.

The main safety caveat is that the IIHS result and average braking performance are worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority.

Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.67% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Volkswagen added an upgraded 4-cylinder engine and a new GT trim with a V6 and sport suspension.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $10,548, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $12,182 average.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, and smartphone connectivity above the base trim.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, updated powertrain choices, and broader trim appeal, the 2018 is the better pick. If your priority is spending less up front and you’re comfortable with the older model year’s setup, the 2017 is the more budget-friendly path.

How does the 2018 Volkswagen Passat compare to the 2018 Honda Accord?

Our experts score the 2018 Volkswagen Passat 8/10 and the 2018 Honda Accord 8.2/10.

The Passat gives you a much lower average used price and a stronger share of good and great deals, which makes it the more affordable buy. The Accord counters with more power, better fuel economy, and a larger pool of listings, so it may be the better choice if you want stronger efficiency and broader market selection. If value and comfort matter most, the Passat makes a strong case; if you want the more polished all-around sedan, the Accord has the edge.
