How much does the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle cost?

Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.

There are 327 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle a good car?

Yes — the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle earns a 4.71/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise the convertible version, the fun driving experience, and the Beetle’s stylish design and functionality. That lines up well with the Beetle’s use case as a style-first compact with nostalgic appeal and a final-year update that adds some extra mechanical significance.

With 29.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have a meaningful chance to find a strong-value example.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle reliable?

Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car people enjoy living with over time, especially for its fun driving character and the way it blends style with everyday functionality. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the updated engine brings added economy for the Beetle’s final lap, which supports the sense that this is a well-sorted late-cycle version.

Volkswagen also notes an extended 6-year warranty for 2018, which adds some ownership reassurance. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the car’s charm and more about finding one that has been maintained well and hasn’t accumulated hidden wear.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Beetle?

At 61.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-priced special edition or convertible. Pay close attention to body condition, interior wear, and whether the equipment on the car matches the trim and package claims in the listing.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S trim comes with LED running lights, heated mirrors, 16-inch alloy wheels, an 8-speaker stereo, a 5-inch touchscreen, a reversing camera, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Style & Comfort Package adds keyless ignition and entry, auto headlights and wipers, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, heated front seats with leatherette, a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen, HD and satellite radio, and VW Car-Net App-Connect with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
• Powertrain: The new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine delivers 174 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, with a new combustion cycle that adds 2 mpg in city driving. The automatic transmission is the only option, and the engine is tuned for smooth, on-demand power rather than quick acceleration.
• Safety package: The SE adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and VW Car-Net Security and Service. The Premium Package adds parking sensors, bi-xenon headlights, LED taillights, a Fender stereo, and an upgraded 6.3-inch touchscreen with navigation.
• Infotainment: The base setup uses a 5-inch touchscreen, while the Style & Comfort Package upgrades you to a 6.3-inch touchscreen with HD and satellite radio plus Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Premium Package adds navigation to the upgraded screen.
• Fuel efficiency: The updated engine adds 2 mpg in city driving, and the Beetle returned 29 mpg combined during testing.

Which 2018 Volkswagen Beetle trim should I buy?

The 2018 Volkswagen Beetle is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, Coast, and Dune.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, and it already gives you LED running lights, heated mirrors, 16-inch alloy wheels, a reversing camera, and a 5-inch touchscreen. If you want the lowest-cost way into the Beetle, this is the trim to start with, but the available Style & Comfort Package is what makes it feel much more complete.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and VW Car-Net Security and Service. It also opens the door to the Premium Package, which adds parking sensors, better lighting, a Fender stereo, and navigation.
• Coast: This special edition is the personality pick, with the Style & Comfort Package content plus a sunroof, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, houndstooth cloth upholstery, a surfboard-style dash pad, and unique Deep Sea Teal paint. It’s the trim to choose if you want the Beetle’s retro character turned up.
• Dune: This is the most expensive and most distinctive version, with special paint and graphics, a larger rear spoiler, 18-inch wheels, extra ground clearance, a wider stance, unique sport seats, and leather. It also includes the content from an SE Beetle with the Premium Package, but it deletes the top touchscreen and blind-spot monitoring, so it’s more about style than value.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that the SE’s blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is a meaningful upgrade, while the Dune deletes that feature despite its higher price.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Beetle?

This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting a deep buyer’s market.

• Deal availability: 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 327 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,769, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle's resale value?

The current average of $19,650 sits slightly below last year's $19,759.

That small decline suggests the Beetle’s market is fairly stable rather than volatile. For a future seller, that usually means you’re less likely to see dramatic swings, but you also shouldn’t expect rapid appreciation from normal ownership alone.

The good news is that steady pricing can help preserve confidence among used-car shoppers, especially when the car has a clear identity and strong enthusiast appeal. Special editions and well-kept examples may hold attention better than ordinary commuter cars because the Beetle’s personality is a major part of its value story.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle safe?

The 2018 Volkswagen Beetle earns five-star ratings from NHTSA overall, with four-star ratings in front and front passenger tests and in the rollover test.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Beetle’s safety equipment includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert on the SE, plus VW Car-Net Security and Service. The Premium Package adds parking sensors, which can make low-speed maneuvering easier.

One caveat is that the safety writeup notes there aren’t current test results available specifically for the convertible, so you should be especially careful if you’re shopping for an open-top version.

Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Beetle or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The year stands out for its final-year significance, updated 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, and special Coast edition.

The bottom line: If you want the Beetle with the most distinctive late-cycle appeal, the 2018 is the one to target. It combines the farewell-year story, the updated engine, and special-edition flair in a way that makes it feel more collectible than earlier versions. If you’re more price-sensitive, focus on the better-value trims and look for a clean, well-documented example rather than paying extra for the most cosmetic special editions.
