Why it stands out
Mercedes-Benz offers the 2018 E-Class as a midsize luxury car that aims for the top of its class, and the test-drive data frames it as a vehicle that delivers a lot of what buyers are paying for. The appeal here is straightforward: it is presented as one of the finest luxury cars available, with the kind of polish and prestige that make it stand out in a crowded segment.
Owner feedback reinforces that impression, with praise for the smooth ride, luxurious interior, powerful performance, advanced features, and elegant styling. The main caution is that some owners worry about high maintenance costs after the warranty period, along with minor wear-and-tear concerns, so the E-Class looks especially compelling for buyers who value refinement and are prepared for premium ownership costs.

The 2018 Mercedes E300 W213 is a very good value in the used car market. Find one with good maintenance history and not abused. The turbocharged four cylinder engine provides enough power for daily driving, is economical, and the car is very comfortable for long trips.

How much does the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,198 |
| Year-Round Low | $23,198 |
| Year-Round High | $25,355 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $25,357 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.51% |
Prices have softened 8.51% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,321 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class a good car?
Yes — the 4.76/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 8.00/10. The model scores 10/10 across Technology and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, luxurious interior, powerful performance, advanced features, and elegant styling. That lines up well with the overview’s focus on a midsize luxury car that aims for the top of its class and delivers the polish and prestige you expect from this nameplate.
With 37.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a compelling price if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.76/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for the smooth ride, luxurious interior, powerful performance, advanced features, and elegant styling. The expert commentary also emphasizes how calm, noise-proof, and composed the car feels on the road, which supports the impression of a well-sorted luxury sedan.
The main ownership caution is that premium maintenance costs can become more noticeable after the warranty period, so used buyers should plan for higher long-term upkeep than they would with a mainstream car.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?
At 60.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision or shows signs of cosmetic wear. Focus on condition details that matter on a premium used car: panel fit, interior wear, electronics, and evidence of deferred maintenance.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The E-Class lineup includes E300 sedan, E300 4Matic sedan, E400 coupe, E400 4Matic coupe, E400 wagon, E43 sedan, and E63 S sedan. The E300 and E300 4Matic are the most popular trims, while the E400 is the better choice if you want stronger performance and the coupe or wagon body styles. The Luxury Line is available only on the E300/E400 sedan and E400 wagon, and it swaps in a classic grille and standing hood ornament for a more understated look.
- Powertrain: The E300 uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, while the E400 uses a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 with 329 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. The E300 is described as underpowered for the car’s size, while the E400 is the better all-around choice. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and 4Matic all-wheel drive is optional on most versions.
- Safety package: Mercedes includes Car-to-X Communication, Pre-Safe Sound, automatic braking that can detect crossing traffic and people, and adaptive cruise control that can respond to changing speed limits. The safety content also notes rear side airbags on the test car and several advanced crash-avoidance and occupant-protection systems, though many of the most advanced features are bundled into an expensive package.
- Infotainment: The cabin tech includes Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a built-in web browser, voice inputs, a head-up display, and configurable digital displays. The system is loaded with features, but some of the most advanced equipment is tied to the Premium 3 package.
- Fuel efficiency: The E300 is EPA-rated at 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway in rear-wheel-drive form, and 21/29 with 4Matic. The E400 coupe is rated at 20/26, while the E400 4Matic wagon is rated at 19/25. The test data also notes 29 mpg on a highway-heavy drive in the E300 and 23 mpg over 600 miles in the E400.
Which 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class trim should I buy?
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is offered in 7 trim levels: E300 sedan, E300 4Matic sedan, E400 coupe, E400 4Matic coupe, E400 wagon, E43 sedan, and E63 S sedan.
Here's the short version:
- E300 sedan: This is the entry point and one of the most popular trims, but the 2.0-liter turbo four is described as underpowered for the E-Class. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting point and are comfortable with the base powertrain.
- E300 4Matic sedan: This adds all-wheel drive to the same basic setup, which can be useful if you want extra traction, but it still carries the same performance limitations as the rear-drive E300.
- E400 coupe: This is the best-value choice if you want the strongest balance of power, refinement, and style. The 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 is the recommended engine, and the coupe body gives you the more distinctive look and feel.
- E400 4Matic coupe: Choose this if you want the E400 coupe’s stronger V6 plus all-wheel drive. It is the right pick if traction matters more to you than keeping the lightest, simplest setup.
- E400 wagon: This is the practical choice in the lineup, and it is also one of the trims eligible for the Luxury Line. It suits you best if you want the E-Class experience with more utility.
- E43 sedan: This is the AMG step-up with a boosted version of the V6 and a more aggressive character. It is for buyers who want more performance than the standard E400.
- E63 S sedan: This is the extreme performance model with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and far more power than the rest of the range. It is the choice if outright performance matters most.
The safety package is impressive, but many of the most advanced features are tied to the expensive Premium 3 package, so you should check equipment carefully before you buy.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing softness to reward careful shopping.
- Deal availability: 37.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,321 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.51% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,198, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class's resale value?
The current average of $23,198 sits slightly below last year's $25,357.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at a strong price and keep the car in excellent condition, you can reduce the impact of depreciation, but premium ownership costs still matter when you think about total value.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.76/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class safe?
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class earns five-star ratings overall, in frontal crash, side crash, and rollover vulnerability from NHTSA, and it is a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Mercedes includes Car-to-X Communication, Pre-Safe Sound, automatic braking that can detect crossing traffic and people, and adaptive cruise control that can respond to changing speed limits. The test car also had optional rear side airbags, which are uncommon in coupes and sedans.
The main caveat is that many of the most advanced safety features are optional rather than standard, so you should verify exactly which systems are fitted on the used car you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 37.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.51% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.76/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary says you get what you pay for, and that this E-Class is one of the finest luxury cars on the face of the planet.
The bottom line: The 2018 E-Class is the right choice if you want a deeply polished luxury sedan and you’re willing to pay for premium ownership. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, the softer pricing and decent deal availability make this year especially worth a look, but you should still compare condition and equipment carefully before committing.
