CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Jeep Compass
overall

Summary
With 3,128 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,416, 32.1% of 2018 Jeep Compasses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Jeep Compass 4.36 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
62.5% of 2018 Compass models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Jeep Compass stands out in the crowded small-SUV market by offering plenty of versatility and the ability to venture where few other compact crossovers dare. It is also positioned as a value play, since it costs less than any other vehicle in its segment and sits between compact SUVs and subcompact SUVs in pricing and other statistics. That combination gives it a distinctive place among mainstream crossovers: it aims to be affordable while still leaning into the Jeep brand’s off-road image.
As the sophomore year of the second generation, the 2018 Compass benefits from being part of a newer design than the original model it replaced. Owners commonly praise its smooth ride, numerous features, value for money, 4x4 capability, and interior upgrades. At the same time, a recurring drawback is lack of power, with many drivers wanting more acceleration, and some also mention blind spots and the absence of turbo-charged options.

This car is just what we were looking for. It is loaded with options and is a great value. I would recommend others to consider it when looking for a SUV.

The fact that this car has more features than newer models due to the specific package of this one, I highly recommend! I have wanted this specific color for exterior and interior for a while, but was even more pleasantly surprised when it came with a panoramic sunroof, Apple CarPlay, Remote start and more. Very happy and think anyone else would love this car as well, even though it is an older model.

This vehicle is the limited trim and has more features than I was expecting. I have researched and compared it to the Subaru Forester, the Honda CR-V, the Toyota Rav 4 and for the price, it was the best deal. It is a very smooth ride and very comfortable, not to mention sporty looking.

Is the 2018 Jeep Compass a good car?
Generally — the 2018 Jeep Compass earns a 4.36/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, numerous features, and value for money, while also highlighting its 4x4 capability and interior upgrades. In use, that makes it a strong fit if you want a small SUV that feels more versatile than a typical commuter crossover and still leans into Jeep’s capability-first identity. The market also shows 33.1% of listings as good or great deals, which supports the case for shopping carefully.
Is the 2018 Jeep Compass reliable?
Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that many people feel good about living with over time, especially because they repeatedly mention value, smooth ride quality, and 4x4 capability. The expert drive notes also emphasize that it is well rounded and well suited for daily driving, with a ride that soaks up bumps while still cornering well. If you want a used SUV you can count on for everyday use, the main ownership risk is that some buyers may still be bothered by its lack of power and highway passing strength.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Jeep Compass?
At 62.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the vehicle’s equipment matches the trim being advertised. Because this model can be found in a wide range of configurations, it is worth confirming that the features you want are actually present.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sport trim is the simplest version, with a reversing camera, push-button start, Bluetooth, six speakers, and a 5-inch touchscreen. Latitude adds automatically activating headlights, roof rails, 17-inch wheels, chrome interior finish, ambient LED lighting, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Limited brings a more upscale cabin with leather seating, heated and ventilated front seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and an 8.4-inch display. Trailhawk is the most rugged-looking version, with red tow hooks, a blacked-out hood, unique badging and grille, skid plates, off-road tires, and unique 17-inch wheels.
- Powertrain: The Compass uses a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine with 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. You can get front-wheel drive or available four-wheel drive, and the 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic is available with front-wheel drive. With four-wheel drive, the 9-speed automatic is optional on Sport and Latitude and standard on Trailhawk and Limited.
- Safety package: The Compass comes standard with seven airbags, all-speed traction control, stability control, the LATCH child-seat anchoring system, hill-start assist, rain brake assist, electronic roll mitigation, hill descent control, a reversing camera with active guidelines, and a trailer-sway damping system. Forward-collision warning and avoidance are available, and available lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, and Park Sense add more protection.
- Infotainment: Sport and Latitude use a 5-inch Uconnect touchscreen with voice control and Bluetooth. Those trims are available with a 7-inch touchscreen that adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Trailhawk and Limited get an 8.4-inch touchscreen standard, and that larger screen is also available on Latitude with the Navigation package.
- Fuel efficiency: The 4WD setup with the optional 9-speed automatic returned 22 mpg city, 30 highway, 25 combined. The 6-speed automatic and 4WD combination gets 22 mpg city, 31 highway, 25 combined, while the 4WD manual matches that result. Front-wheel drive returns 23 mpg city, 32 highway, 26 combined.
Which 2018 Jeep Compass trim should I buy?
The 2018 Jeep Compass is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Trailhawk, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the essentials without much extra cost. You get the reversing camera, push-button start, Bluetooth, six speakers, and the 5-inch Uconnect screen, so it works well if you want the lowest-priced way into the Compass lineup.
- Latitude: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like automatic headlights, roof rails, 17-inch wheels, ambient lighting, and a nicer cabin feel. If you want a more polished Compass without jumping to the pricier luxury-oriented trims, this is the one to focus on.
- Trailhawk: Choose this if you want the most off-road-focused version. It adds skid plates, off-road tires, unique wheels, red tow hooks, and a blacked-out hood, making it the clear pick for buyers who care most about trail use and rugged styling.
- Limited: This is the upscale choice, with leather seating, heated and ventilated front seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, and the larger 8.4-inch display. It suits you best if comfort and cabin features matter more than keeping the price down.
The safety package includes standard reversing-camera coverage, while forward-collision warning and avoidance remain available rather than standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Jeep Compass?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,128 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.00% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,406, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Jeep Compass's resale value?
The current average of $13,406 sits slightly below last year's $14,732.
That decline suggests the Compass has softened in the used market, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition so you are not starting from a weakened price position. Listings that are clean, well equipped, and priced near the lower end of the range should be easier to move later than higher-mileage or accident-history examples.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Jeep Compass safe?
The 2018 Jeep Compass earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
It comes standard with seven airbags, all-speed traction control, stability control, hill-start assist, rain brake assist, electronic roll mitigation, hill descent control, a reversing camera with active guidelines, and trailer-sway damping. The available driver-assistance suite adds forward-collision warning and avoidance, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, and Park Sense. One important caveat is that forward-collision warning and avoidance are not standard, so you should verify whether a used listing includes the safety equipment you want.
Should I buy a 2018 Jeep Compass or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.00% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 model benefits from the second-generation Compass design, which brings a newer platform, stronger interior appeal, and the Trailhawk’s off-road hardware.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $11,314, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $13,406 average.
- It aims to blend everyday comfort with real off-road ability.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced buy, the 2018 is the stronger choice because it combines newer design, broad trim variety, and a softer price trend. If your top priority is spending less up front, the 2017 can make sense, but you should be especially careful to compare condition, equipment, and capability before deciding.
