CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Honda HR-V
overall

Summary
With 1,031 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,068, 30.6% of 2018 Honda HR-Vs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Honda HR-V 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.67 / 10.
59.5% of 2018 HR-V models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Honda HR-V stands out as a small crossover that delivers big-car utility in a city-friendly package. Its appeal starts with the way it combines the footprint of a subcompact with the practicality buyers want from a crossover, making it easy to live with in tight spaces while still feeling useful for everyday errands and commuting.
Honda also gives the HR-V a few traits that help it feel more substantial than its size suggests. It is based on the Fit hatchback, but it offers higher ground clearance, optional all-wheel drive, and a more premium cabin. The 2018 HR-V is also positioned as a less expensive alternative to the popular CR-V, which adds to its value appeal. Owners commonly praise its comfort, gas mileage, user-friendly features, interior versatility, and smooth ride, though some note sluggish acceleration and limited visibility.

The car is fantastic for its value. Loaded with neat features including remote start that wasn’t advertised! Heated cloth seats, a sun roof, side mirror camera and back up camera, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, eco option when driving etc. lots of trunk room and the back seats fold down as well for extra space! for me personally the car is not missing anything. It’s a major upgrade from what I had previously and it’s one of the best financial decisions I made going from an unreliable American made car make, to a reliable and trustworthy car make

I went for the FWD to get better gas mileage. It gets great economy. About 38 mpg on highway and 26 or so around the city and suburbs. Comfortable with good dashboard.

Great gas mileage, features were not over the top but dummy friendly to figure out. Handles nicely, fun to drive. I think the car is an excellent value. Wish it had arm rests, but other than that, its perfect!

Is the 2018 Honda HR-V a good car?
Yes — the 4.5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 6.67/10. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, great gas mileage, and user-friendly features. They also highlight the interior versatility and family-friendly usefulness, which fits the HR-V’s role as a city-friendly crossover with a practical footprint. In that context, the HR-V makes the most sense if you want easy everyday commuting, useful cargo flexibility, and a small crossover that feels more substantial than its size suggests.
31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still some room to find a competitive offer.
Is the 2018 Honda HR-V reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a reliable, dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with many drivers describing it as a car they can count on for daily commuting. The expert evaluation reinforces that sense of durability by emphasizing the HR-V’s composed road manners and comfortable, easygoing character. Honda also notes that the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a neglected example could be more frustrating than expensive, so condition and maintenance history matter more than the badge alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Honda HR-V?
At 59% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and any signs of prior repair. It also makes sense to focus on how the car drives and whether the cabin electronics, visibility, and everyday controls feel as expected. Because this model’s appeal is tied so closely to practicality and comfort, condition matters a lot when you’re comparing used examples.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LX has similar alloys in one color, while EX and EX-L trims add two-tone 17-inch wheels; only EX-L trims come with leather.
- Powertrain: A single 1.8-liter 4-cylinder serves all trims, with a 6-speed manual standard on front-wheel-drive LX and EX, while all-wheel drive is optional and pairs exclusively with the CVT.
- Safety package: Honda’s standard multi-angle reversing camera is included, and optional LaneWatch uses a camera in the right side-view mirror to show the blind spot on the central screen. Forward-collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and other electronic safety features are not available.
- Infotainment: The system does not support Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, response time is slow, and the maps are low resolution; SiriusXM and HD Radio come on the top trim.
- Fuel efficiency: Fuel economy is EPA rated at between 25 and 27 mpg city and 31 and 34 mpg highway, and the AWD EX-L is rated at 27/31.
Which 2018 Honda HR-V trim should I buy?
The 2018 Honda HR-V is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the HR-V’s core practicality at the lowest starting price. It makes the most sense if you want the least expensive way into the model and are comfortable with the simpler equipment set.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a more polished look with two-tone 17-inch wheels while staying below the top trim. It’s the trim to focus on if you want a better balance of equipment and price.
- EX-L: This is the most upscale version, with leather and the widest color selection, plus the top-trim audio and connectivity extras. Choose it if you want the most premium-feeling HR-V and are willing to pay more for it.
Safety-wise, the HR-V does not offer forward-collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, or other electronic safety features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Honda HR-V?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,023 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,348, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Honda HR-V's resale value?
The current average of $16,069 sits slightly below last year's $16,147.
That small decline suggests the market has been fairly stable rather than volatile, which is helpful if you plan to sell later. A steady price pattern can make it easier to estimate what your HR-V may be worth down the road, especially if you keep mileage and condition in check. Strong demand for practical, well-liked crossovers can also help support resale value when your vehicle is clean and well maintained.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Honda HR-V safe?
The 2018 Honda HR-V earns five-star ratings overall and in side crash tests from NHTSA, and four-star ratings in frontal crash tests. It scored the top Good rating in four of five crash tests conducted by IIHS, with an Acceptable rating for front side overlap, and it is not a Top Safety Pick.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda’s standard multi-angle reversing camera is a useful feature, and optional LaneWatch adds a camera-based view of the right-side blind spot on the central screen. However, forward-collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and other electronic safety features are not available for the HR-V. That missing equipment is the main safety caveat you should keep in mind when shopping used.
Should I buy a 2018 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It offers a city-friendly footprint, optional all-wheel drive, and a more premium cabin than you might expect from a subcompact crossover.
The bottom line: The 2018 HR-V makes sense if you want a practical, comfortable, and easy-to-live-with used crossover and you value steady pricing and strong owner satisfaction. If you’re shopping more aggressively on price, you can still find good value in this year, but you should be selective about condition and history because accident-free examples are not the majority.
