CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Honda HR-V
overall

Summary
With 971 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,259.00, 32.0% of 2018 Honda HR-Vs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Honda HR-V 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.67 / 10.
61.6% of 2018 HR-V models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Honda HR-V stands out as a small crossover that delivers big-car utility in a city-friendly package. Its appeal starts with the way it blends subcompact dimensions with the kind of practicality shoppers often want from a larger vehicle, making it an easy fit for daily driving without giving up versatility.
What makes the HR-V distinctive is its Fit hatchback foundation, higher ground clearance, optional all-wheel drive, and more premium cabin. It is also positioned below the CR-V and Pilot, and the expert test drive data notes that it is thousands of dollars less than the popular CR-V. That combination gives the 2018 HR-V a clear value angle for buyers who want crossover usefulness without moving up to a larger, pricier model.
There are limits to that bargain, though. The same source notes that when priced above $27,000, you might consider upgrading your seat. Owner feedback also points to sluggish acceleration and limited visibility, even as many drivers praise the HR-V for comfort, great gas mileage, user-friendly features, and a smooth ride.

The car is fantastic for its value. Loaded with neat features including remote start that wasn’t advertised! Heated cloth seats, a sun roof, side mirror camera and back up camera, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, eco option when driving etc. lots of trunk room and the back seats fold down as well for extra space! for me personally the car is not missing anything. It’s a major upgrade from what I had previously and it’s one of the best financial decisions I made going from an unreliable American made car make, to a reliable and trustworthy car make

I went for the FWD to get better gas mileage. It gets great economy. About 38 mpg on highway and 26 or so around the city and suburbs. Comfortable with good dashboard.

Great gas mileage, features were not over the top but dummy friendly to figure out. Handles nicely, fun to drive. I think the car is an excellent value. Wish it had arm rests, but other than that, its perfect!

How much does the 2018 Honda HR-V cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,244 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,368.24 |
| Year-Round High | $16,261.74 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,201 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +0.27% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
With 1,015 listings available, you have a decent amount of inventory to compare before you buy. If you find a listing below $15,368.24, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Honda HR-V a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Honda HR-V earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 6.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, great gas mileage, and user-friendly features, and they also highlight the interior versatility that makes it useful for family duty and daily commuting. The HR-V’s city-friendly size and crossover practicality fit well with the overview’s emphasis on big-car utility in a small package, especially if you want something easy to live with without moving up to a larger SUV. With 26.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop carefully for value.
Is the 2018 Honda HR-V reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a reliable choice that many drivers feel good about keeping for daily use, with praise for its smooth ride and trouble-free feel. The expert driving notes also support that impression by describing the HR-V as composed, comfortable, and easy to maneuver, which usually matters when you’re planning to keep a vehicle for the long haul. Honda’s standard multi-angle reversing camera and optional LaneWatch add everyday confidence, and the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the HR-V’s older powertrain and dated tech can make it feel less current than newer rivals.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Honda HR-V?
At 60.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Pay close attention to body condition, repair quality, and whether the car’s equipment and safety features match the trim being advertised. Because this model can be found in a wide range of conditions, the difference between a clean example and a repaired one matters a lot.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LX has similar alloys in one color, while EX and EX-L trims get two-tone 17-inch wheels. The EX-L also adds leather, and the top trim brings SiriusXM and HD Radio, so feature gaps are most noticeable at the lower end.
- Powertrain: A single 1.8-liter 4-cylinder makes 141 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque. The front-wheel-drive LX and EX can be had with a 6-speed manual, while all-wheel drive is optional on all trims and pairs with the CVT.
- Safety package: Honda’s standard multi-angle reversing camera is included, and optional LaneWatch uses a camera in the right side-view mirror to show the blind spot on the center screen. Forward-collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and other electronic safety features are not available.
- Infotainment: The system does not support Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, response time is slow, and the maps are low resolution. Voice recognition is adequate, but the interface is dated and confusing.
- Fuel efficiency: Fuel economy is EPA rated at between 25 and 27 mpg city and 31 and 34 mpg highway. The AWD EX-L is rated at 27/31, and the manual transmission is described as quicker than the CVT.
Which 2018 Honda HR-V trim should I buy?
The 2018 Honda HR-V is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, and it makes the HR-V’s core value case work if you want the lowest price and can live without the nicer cabin touches and extra convenience features found higher up.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more equipment without pushing the price into the range where the HR-V starts to feel harder to justify.
- EX-L: Choose this if you want the most upscale cabin in the lineup, including leather and the top-trim audio and connectivity extras, but it makes the HR-V’s value proposition less compelling.
The safety package is limited across the lineup, so don’t expect advanced driver-assistance features on any trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Honda HR-V?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,015 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,368.24, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Honda HR-V's resale value?
The current average of $16,244 sits slightly above last year's $16,201.
That small increase suggests the HR-V has held its value fairly well, which is a good sign if you plan to sell later. Stable pricing also points to steady demand rather than a market that is weakening. For you, that means a clean, well-kept example should remain relatively easy to move when it’s time to trade or sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Honda HR-V safe?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration rates the HR-V at five-star overall, with five-star ratings in side crash tests and four-star ratings for frontal crashes.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda’s standard multi-angle reversing camera is a useful everyday safety feature, and optional LaneWatch helps show the right-side blind spot on the center screen. But forward-collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and other electronic safety features are not available, and the lack of forward-collision alert with auto-braking keeps it from earning a Top Safety Pick. The IIHS gave it Good ratings in four of five crash tests and an Acceptable rating for front side overlap, so the crash performance is solid but not class-leading.
Should I buy a 2018 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It offers a practical, city-friendly crossover package with a value angle that sits below larger Honda SUVs.
The bottom line: The 2018 HR-V makes sense if you want a practical, easy-to-park crossover and you’re comfortable trading away newer tech and advanced safety features. If you want the strongest value, focus on a clean, well-priced example with a documented history. If you’re price-sensitive and can accept the dated infotainment and modest power, this year can still be a smart buy.
