CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Honda HR-V
overall

Summary
With 971 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,259.00, 32.0% of 2018 Honda HR-Vs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Honda HR-V 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.67 / 10.
61.6% of 2018 HR-V models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Honda HR-V stands out as a small crossover that delivers big-car utility in a city-friendly package. Its appeal starts with the way it blends subcompact dimensions with the kind of practicality shoppers often want from a larger vehicle, making it an easy fit for daily driving without giving up versatility.
What makes the HR-V distinctive is its Fit hatchback foundation, higher ground clearance, optional all-wheel drive, and more premium cabin. It is also positioned below the CR-V and Pilot, and the expert test drive data notes that it is thousands of dollars less than the popular CR-V. That combination gives the 2018 HR-V a clear value angle for buyers who want crossover usefulness without moving up to a larger, pricier model.
There are limits to that bargain, though. The same source notes that when priced above $27,000, you might consider upgrading your seat. Owner feedback also points to sluggish acceleration and limited visibility, even as many drivers praise the HR-V for comfort, great gas mileage, user-friendly features, and a smooth ride.

The car is fantastic for its value. Loaded with neat features including remote start that wasn’t advertised! Heated cloth seats, a sun roof, side mirror camera and back up camera, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, eco option when driving etc. lots of trunk room and the back seats fold down as well for extra space! for me personally the car is not missing anything. It’s a major upgrade from what I had previously and it’s one of the best financial decisions I made going from an unreliable American made car make, to a reliable and trustworthy car make

I went for the FWD to get better gas mileage. It gets great economy. About 38 mpg on highway and 26 or so around the city and suburbs. Comfortable with good dashboard.

Great gas mileage, features were not over the top but dummy friendly to figure out. Handles nicely, fun to drive. I think the car is an excellent value. Wish it had arm rests, but other than that, its perfect!

If you find a listing below $15,363.78, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Honda HR-V a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Honda HR-V earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 6.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, great gas mileage, and user-friendly features. They also highlight the interior and versatility, especially for family use, and many describe it as a reliable daily driver with a smooth ride.
That lines up well with the overview: you’re looking at a small crossover that gives you city-friendly size without giving up the practicality and flexibility many shoppers want from a larger SUV. With 32.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Honda HR-V reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a reliable, trouble-free, and dependable ownership experience, with many drivers saying they can count on it for daily commuting. The expert test drive data also describes it as a composed, comfortable vehicle, which supports the sense that it’s built for steady everyday use rather than drama.
Honda’s standard maintenance coverage is a plus when you’re thinking about ownership costs, and the model’s straightforward mechanical setup should help keep long-term risk manageable for used buyers. Still, you should pay close attention to service history and how the transmission and electronics have aged on the specific vehicle you’re considering.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Honda HR-V?
At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if you’re comparing multiple examples with similar prices. Focus on overall condition, because the HR-V’s value depends heavily on how well it has been maintained and whether the cabin, electronics, and drivability still feel tight.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LX has similar alloys in one color, while EX and EX-L trims get two-tone 17-inch wheels. Only EX-L trims come with leather.
- Powertrain: A single 1.8-liter 4-cylinder makes 141 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque. The 6-speed manual is standard on front-wheel-drive LX and EX trims, while all-wheel drive is optional on all trims and pairs exclusively with the CVT.
- Safety package: Honda’s standard multi-angle reversing camera is included, and optional LaneWatch uses a camera in the right side-view mirror to show the blind spot on the central screen. Forward-collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and other electronic safety features are not available.
- Infotainment: The infotainment system does not support Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Response time is slow, maps are low resolution, and menu layouts are confusing. SiriusXM and HD Radio come on the top trim.
- Fuel efficiency: Fuel economy is EPA rated at between 25 and 27 mpg city and 31 and 34 mpg highway. The AWD EX-L is rated at 27/31, and the test vehicle averaged 25 mpg over 300 miles.
Which 2018 Honda HR-V trim should I buy?
The 2018 Honda HR-V is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The LX gives you the essentials, but it misses out on the more upscale touches found higher up the range. It also lacks the leather that comes on EX-L.
- Sweet-spot trim: The EX is the best value if you want a step up from the base model without going all the way to the top. It adds more visual appeal with two-tone 17-inch wheels and keeps the HR-V’s core practicality intact.
- Premium/top trim: The EX-L brings the most upscale feel, including leather and the most complete feature set in this lineup. It’s the trim to target if you want the nicest cabin and the most premium presentation.
- Off-road trim: None of the trims are aimed at off-road use, so there isn’t a dedicated off-road choice to prioritize.
The safety setup is limited across the range, since forward-collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and other electronic safety features are not available.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Honda HR-V?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,024 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,363.78, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Honda HR-V's resale value?
The current average of $16,261 sits slightly above last year's $16,199.
That kind of stability suggests the HR-V has held its value reasonably well, which is helpful if you plan to sell later. A steady price trend also means you’re less likely to see dramatic swings that punish you for buying at the wrong time. For a future seller, that usually points to a market that still recognizes the model’s practicality and everyday appeal.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Honda HR-V safe?
The HR-V scored the top Good rating in four of five crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), with an Acceptable rating for front side overlap. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rates the HR-V at five-star overall, with five-star ratings in side crash tests and four-star ratings for frontal crashes.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda’s standard multi-angle reversing camera is a useful basic safety feature, and optional LaneWatch adds a camera-based view of the right-side blind spot. But forward-collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and other electronic safety features are not available for the HR-V, which is a meaningful limitation for shoppers who want more modern driver assistance.
Should I buy a 2018 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert test drive data highlights its big-car utility in a city-friendly package, with higher ground clearance, optional all-wheel drive, and a more premium cabin.
The bottom line: If you want a practical, comfortable, and value-oriented subcompact crossover, the 2018 HR-V makes sense as a primary target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you should compare carefully against nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example you can find, since accident history and equipment gaps matter more here than a small difference in sticker price.
