How much does the 2018 GMC Terrain cost?

Prices have softened 9.64% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,806 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2018 GMC Terrain a good car?

Yes — the 2018 GMC Terrain earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 6.2/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Form and function.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, spaciousness, and the variety of features available, especially in higher trim levels. The overview also points to a compact crossover that can still make sense if you want a conceptually appealing SUV with a roomy cabin and a smooth driving feel. Even so, the same feedback points to brake sensitivity, limited power in some situations, and pricing concerns, so it fits you best if comfort and equipment matter more than outright value or polish.

Good and great deals account for 29.4% of listings, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2018 GMC Terrain reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a vehicle that many people find comfortable, spacious, and enjoyable to live with over time, and it also highlights the 2.0L turbo engine as a particularly satisfying choice. That same summary uses reliability-minded language in describing the Terrain as a vehicle owners can count on for comfort and everyday use. The expert driving notes also suggest a dependable-feeling chassis and controls, with steering that is easy to manage and brake behavior that is generally predictable in normal driving.

If you buy used, the main long-term ownership risk is that the Terrain’s value and mechanical appeal depend heavily on condition, maintenance history, and engine choice.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 GMC Terrain?

At 63.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with multiple owners. Pay close attention to body condition, brake feel, interior wear, and whether the equipment on the specific listing matches what you expect from the trim level. Because pricing can climb quickly with options, it also helps to confirm that the features you want are actually present.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali. The SL is the most basic version, with FWD, the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, and limited paint choices, while higher trims add more comfort, brightwork, and upscale equipment. The Denali stands out for its premium look and added features, but the lower trims make the biggest difference in how much equipment you get for the money.
• Powertrain: The Terrain offers a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder gas engine, a turbocharged 1.6-liter diesel engine, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter gas engine. The 1.5-liter is the standard engine, but the 2.0-liter is the stronger and more satisfying choice if you want better performance.
• Safety package: Standard Teen Driver technology and Rear Seat Reminder are included. Other driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems are mostly optional, and adaptive cruise control plus higher-speed automatic emergency braking are missing.
• Infotainment: The Terrain uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, OnStar services, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, navigation, an SD card reader, and four USB ports. Wireless device charging is included on Denali.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter test vehicle averaged 22.6 mpg, and the 1.5-liter engine was described as delivering disappointing fuel economy of 23.3 mpg.

Which 2018 GMC Terrain trim should I buy?

The 2018 GMC Terrain is offered in 4 trim levels: SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali.

Here's the short version:

• SL: This is the entry point, and it keeps the price lowest by sticking with FWD, the 1.5-liter engine, and very limited options. It makes sense only if you want the cheapest way into the model and can live with the bare essentials.
• SLE: This is the first trim that makes the Terrain feel more realistic for most shoppers, since the SL is too stripped down for many buyers. It is the best-value starting point if you want a usable mix of equipment without jumping too far in price.
• SLT: This trim is the better choice if you want more comfort and a more upscale feel without going all the way to Denali. It suits you if you care about a richer feature set and are willing to pay more for it.
• Denali: This is the top trim and the one that adds the most premium presentation, including extra brightwork, wireless charging, and the 7-speaker Bose sound system. It is the right pick if you want the most upscale Terrain and are comfortable paying for it.

Standard Teen Driver technology and Rear Seat Reminder are included, while many other driver-assistance features remain optional.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 GMC Terrain?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and focused.

• Deal availability: 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,806 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.64% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 63.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,784, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 GMC Terrain's resale value?

The current average of $13,784 sits slightly below last year's $15,255.

That softer pricing suggests the Terrain has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you choose a well-kept example and avoid overpaying for options that the market doesn’t strongly reward, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later. The biggest resale advantage will likely come from condition, equipment, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 GMC Terrain safe?

The 2018 GMC Terrain earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with a three-star rating for rear seat side-impact protection.

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard Teen Driver technology lets you set vehicle limits and review driving reports, and Rear Seat Reminder is also standard. Most other driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems are optional, and adaptive cruise control plus higher-speed automatic emergency braking are missing. The lower rear-seat side-impact result is the main safety caveat to keep in mind if you plan to carry passengers regularly.

Should I buy a 2018 GMC Terrain or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.64% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert summary says the 2018 Terrain is a conceptually appealing compact crossover that falls apart under scrutiny, with a questionable value equation and safety concerns.

The bottom line: If you want a used Terrain and can find a clean, well-priced example, the 2018 can work as a comfort-first compact crossover. If you’re a price-sensitive buyer, you should be especially selective and compare it carefully against other years or alternatives, because the 2018’s value and safety tradeoffs are hard to ignore.

How does the 2018 GMC Terrain compare to the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox?

Our experts score the 2018 GMC Terrain 6.2/10 and the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox 7.2/10.

The Terrain and Equinox share the same 1.5L 170 hp engine, but the Equinox has the edge in highway fuel economy and a lower average used price. The Terrain counters with a slightly higher share of good and great deals and a more premium-feeling presentation, but the Equinox is the stronger overall value based on the scores and the spec sheet.
