CarGurus Analysis: 2018 GMC Terrain
overall

Summary
With 164 currently listed for sale near Cleveland, OH and an average price of $12,819, 22.0% of 2018 GMC Terrains for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 GMC Terrain 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.17 / 10.
74.4% of 2018 Terrain models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 GMC Terrain arrives with a conservatively redesigned look, but the result is a compact crossover that does not live up to its promise. It loses the rugged styling that once helped it stand out, and it does not meet safety expectations for a brand-new design. The overall impression is that it looks appealing at first glance, but falls apart under closer scrutiny.
That weak first impression carries over to the value equation, which is described as questionable. Even so, the Terrain still has some practical appeal for buyers who prioritize comfort and space, and owners often praise the variety of available features, especially in higher trim levels. Some also find it smooth and enjoyable to drive, though brake sensitivity and a lack of power in certain situations are recurring concerns.

It’s the Denali so it has everything you need plus more. Only thing that would make it better would be a V6 but this 2.0 turbo has major get up and go.

The car is amazing and of great value. We purchased this vehicle for under the market value and it is in excellent condition. I did a thorough walk around and probably looked like an idiot looking for the smallest dents and scratches. The vehicle has great options, panoramic roof and good quality materials, especially for the price. What a steal my wife got!!!!

This car exceeded my highest expectations. Very nice ride, appropriate amount of room and has a very sporty feel. Has a lot of extra features that make it over all a very nice care. The push gear buttons will take some time to get use to but over all very very cool.

I like the car, but the brakes are a little sensitive and the pick-up (from a stop) can be jerky. Otherwise, it is smooth, comfortable, and a quiet ride.

How much does the 2018 GMC Terrain cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,150 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,143 |
| Year-Round High | $15,679 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,681 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.76% |
Prices have softened 9.76% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,804 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2018 GMC Terrain a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.71/5, and the expert rating is 6.17/10. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Form and function.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, spaciousness, and the variety of features available, especially in higher trim levels. Many also describe it as smooth and enjoyable to drive, with the 2.0L turbo engine drawing especially positive feedback. For you, that means the Terrain makes the most sense if you want a compact crossover that emphasizes comfort and everyday usability over a more rugged personality. Good and great deals account for 31.2% of listings, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 GMC Terrain reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a vehicle that many people find comfortable, spacious, and enjoyable to live with over time, and reviewers specifically call out the 2.0L turbo engine as a smooth, satisfying choice. The expert evaluation also describes the Terrain as a vehicle that can feel appealing in concept and useful in daily driving, with a cabin that improves on layout and materials quality. The same evaluation also notes that the Terrain’s value proposition is questionable, so long-term ownership risk is less about basic livability and more about whether you’ll feel satisfied with what you paid for it.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 GMC Terrain?
At 63.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible cosmetic repairs. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, tire wear, brake feel, and any signs that the vehicle has been used hard or repaired after a collision. If you’re shopping for a family vehicle, pay extra attention to the rear-seat area and the overall condition of the safety equipment.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Terrain is offered in SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali. The SL is stripped down, with FWD only, the 1.5-liter engine only, and limited paint choices, while higher trims add more comfort, convenience, and upscale touches. If you want the best value, the SLE is the minimum starting point, but the higher trims are where the Terrain’s feature content becomes more appealing.
- Powertrain: You can choose among a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder gas engine, a turbocharged 1.6-liter diesel engine, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter gas engine. The 2.0-liter is the stronger and more satisfying choice, while the 1.5-liter is the standard engine and the diesel is part of the broader lineup.
- Safety package: Teen Driver technology and Rear Seat Reminder are standard. Other driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems are available, but adaptive cruise control and a higher-speed automatic emergency braking system are missing.
- Infotainment: The Terrain uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also offers OnStar subscription services with a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, navigation, an SD card reader, and four USB data ports.
- Fuel efficiency: The 1.5-liter engine returned 23.3 mpg in testing, and the 2.0-liter engine averaged 22.6 mpg in testing.
Which 2018 GMC Terrain trim should I buy?
The 2018 GMC Terrain is offered in 4 trim levels: SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali.
Here's the short version:
- SL: This is the bare-bones entry point, with FWD only, the 1.5-liter engine only, and very limited paint and option choices. It makes sense only if you’re chasing the lowest possible price and can live without much flexibility.
- SLE: This is the minimum trim most shoppers should consider. It opens the door to a more realistic ownership experience and is the starting point if you want to build in useful equipment without jumping straight to the top of the range.
- SLT: This is the better-equipped middle ground if you want more comfort and convenience without going all the way to Denali pricing. It’s the trim to target if you want the Terrain’s upscale feel without overcommitting.
- Denali: This is the most luxurious version, with extra brightwork, premium leather, burnished aluminum trim, wireless device charging, and a 7-speaker Bose premium sound system. It suits you best if you want the most upscale Terrain and are willing to pay for it.
Teen Driver technology and Rear Seat Reminder are standard, while other driver-assistance features are mostly optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 GMC Terrain?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,804 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.76% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,143, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 GMC Terrain's resale value?
The current average of $14,150 sits slightly below last year's $15,681.
That decline suggests the Terrain has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help you as a buyer today but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price, the softer market can work in your favor because you’re starting from a lower entry point. Still, the model’s value story depends heavily on condition, equipment, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 GMC Terrain safe?
The 2018 Terrain earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA and a 3-star rating for rear seat, side-impact protection.
It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.
Teen Driver technology is standard, letting you set vehicle limits and review driving reports, and Rear Seat Reminder is also standard. The Terrain’s safety equipment list includes the usual driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems, but adaptive cruise control and a higher-speed automatic emergency braking system are missing. The rear-seat side-impact result is the key caveat you should keep in mind, especially if you plan to use this SUV for family duty.
Should I buy a 2018 GMC Terrain or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.76% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert review says the 2018 Terrain looks appealing at first glance but falls short under closer scrutiny, with safety and value concerns that matter if you’re shopping carefully.
The bottom line: If you want the 2018 Terrain, the best path is to shop selectively, verify history, and focus on condition and equipment rather than chasing the cheapest example. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the softened market can still make this year worth considering, but you should compare it carefully against other model years and similar compact crossovers before committing.
