CarGurus Analysis: 2018 GMC Canyon

Summary
With 708 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,578, 30.5% of 2018 GMC Canyon listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 GMC Canyon 4.25 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2018 GMC Canyon stands out in the midsize pickup class because it blends truck utility with a more upscale personality than many rivals. By this point in the second generation, GMC had already moved the Canyon toward a more refined image, and the lineup included the Denali trim, which added a more luxurious feel. For buyers who want a smaller pickup that is easier to live with than a full-size truck, the Canyon’s size and maneuverability are part of its appeal, and its available off-road-oriented equipment gives it broader capability than a basic commuter pickup.
For 2018, the Canyon’s infotainment system had already been updated with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, and the smaller infotainment screen had been increased to seven inches. The Denali trim also carried features such as 20-inch chrome wheels, a spray-in bedliner, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, the Driver Alert package, a Bose premium audio system, and a wireless charging pad. That combination of upscale equipment and practical truck hardware is a big part of what makes this Canyon distinctive.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Canyon’s fuel economy was respectable rather than class-leading, and the model’s crash-test results were mixed, with the NHTSA giving it four stars overall and in frontal protection, five stars for side impacts, and three stars in rollover tests. It also depreciated faster than rival midsize pickups for most of this generation, so while the 2018 Canyon can be appealing for its comfort, features, and available luxury, shoppers should weigh those strengths against its costs and limitations.

While not having a lot to compare it to, it appears so far to be a strong running engine (2.8 Duramax) . The seating seams hard in contrast to my last truck (2500 HD ) , both being Denali versions with leather seats . The fuel mileage is outstanding averaging low to mid 30s . The electronics package is full of creature comforts including heated and cooled seats . Overall a nice ride.

Drivers commonly praise its strong running engine, comfort, and good looks, and many also like the extended bed option. The Canyon’s appeal is strongest if you want a smaller pickup that is easier to live with than a full-size truck, while still offering a more upscale personality than many rivals. With 31.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 GMC Canyon reliable?
Owners rate it 4.25/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback highlights a strong running engine and comfort, and those are encouraging signs if you want a truck you can count on. At the same time, some drivers mention transmission issues, so you should pay close attention to service history and how the truck drives on a test route. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk looks manageable, but only if you verify maintenance and condition carefully.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 GMC Canyon?
At 67.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was repaired properly. Put inspection priority on the transmission, since some owners have raised concerns there, and make sure the truck shifts smoothly in everyday driving. Also focus on overall condition and equipment, especially if you are considering a higher-trim example where repair costs can be more expensive.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 GMC Canyon?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right truck.
- Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 711 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.53% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 67.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,203, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 GMC Canyon's resale value?
The current average of $21,597 sits slightly below last year's $22,861.
That decline suggests the Canyon has been losing value, which can be a concern if you plan to sell in the near future. On the other hand, the softer market can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. If you keep the truck in strong condition and maintain it well, you can improve your odds of getting a better resale outcome later.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.25/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 67.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.53% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.25/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $20,044, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $21,597 average.
- It emphasizes serious towing and hauling capability in a smaller package.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping environment, the 2018 is the stronger primary target because it combines a softer price trend with solid owner satisfaction. If your top priority is saving money upfront, the 2017 is the better secondary path, especially if you value capability and can live with fewer features.
