CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Ford Mustang
overall

Summary
With 2,032 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,079.00, 30.4% of 2018 Ford Mustangs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Ford Mustang 4.61 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.
60.6% of 2018 Mustang models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
With a nip here and a tuck there, plus substantial mechanical and technological improvements, the 2018 Ford Mustang aims to ensure its continued popularity. It comes across as less rudimentary and more sophisticated than ever, blurring the line between mainstream and premium cars as well as muscle and sports cars. That broader appeal is part of what makes it distinctive: it remains a pony car at heart, but it is presented as a more polished and capable package than the nameplate’s old reputation might suggest.
The 2018 Ford Mustang also stands out because its performance credentials are strong enough that its rivals are no longer described as being limited solely to the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a car with serious sporting intent but also a more refined feel than a bare-bones muscle car. Owners’ feedback reinforces that image, with praise for its power, sporty design, enjoyable driving experience, fast acceleration, and smooth ride. At the same time, some owners note limited trunk space and discrepancies in vehicle specifications, which are worth keeping in mind for shoppers who need everyday practicality.

This is a driver’s car. Base model, performance package, standard shift. It’s got all the right parts and it is exactly the car I would have ordered if I were there to purchase this car when it was new.

First the color Kona Blue is beautiful especially in the sunlight. Ride is smooth and comfortable. I love that you change to sport mode. And your comfort or sport for steering. Love it! Inexpensive muscle car.

Very good value. Car is missing nothing. I would compare it to a corvette.

Engine sounds good. Interior has lots of cigarette burns. Front bumper cover was repainted, could have done a better job on the clear coat. Scratch down the passenger side quarter panel. Would have bought for cash if price was a little bit lower.

Is the 2018 Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Ford Mustang earns a 4.61/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its power, sporty design, enjoyable driving experience, fast acceleration, and smooth ride. The overview also frames it as a more polished, capable pony car that blends mainstream and premium appeal, which fits buyers who want serious performance without a bare-bones feel. With 29.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.61/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also points to a car that feels fun, stylish, and affordable, with many drivers appreciating its enjoyable driving experience and smooth ride.
The expert review reinforces that sense of confidence by describing the Mustang as more sophisticated than before and noting that it delivers strong performance with a more refined feel. Ford also built in a range of driver-focused systems that help the car feel composed and predictable in everyday use.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been abused, especially if it was driven hard or modified.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Ford Mustang?
At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has performance upgrades or signs of hard use. Pay close attention to body condition, tire wear, brake wear, and whether the car’s equipment matches its advertised configuration. If you need the Mustang as an everyday car, make sure the specific example you’re considering still fits your practicality needs.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Premium trim adds higher-quality materials, exposed contrast stitching, and aluminum carbon-pattern trim, while the base setup is more basic inside.
- Powertrain: The 5.0-liter V8 makes 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, and the 10-speed automatic adds adaptive shift logic, paddle shifters, and multiple drive modes; the manual gets a twin-disc clutch and dual-mass flywheel.
- Safety package: Ford’s driver-assistance suite includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, driver monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alerts. The IIHS small-overlap frontal result is only Acceptable, and the IIHS had not sampled a Mustang with the new driver-assistance technologies at the time of the review.
- Infotainment: The Mustang gets a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, Sync 3, Track Apps, Ford Sync Connect, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Fuel efficiency: The V8-powered GT is rated at 19 miles per gallon in combined driving, and the review notes that the EcoBoost with a Performance Package is the value-oriented choice if you want to save fuel and money.
Which 2018 Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2018 Ford Mustang is offered in 3 trim levels: EcoBoost, GT, and Premium.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The EcoBoost is the value play, but you give up the richer cabin materials that come with Premium trim, and the review makes clear that the more basic interior can feel less upscale.
- Sweet-spot trim: The GT is the best fit if you want the Mustang’s core performance character, especially with the Performance Package, which adds chassis, suspension, steering, braking, and differential upgrades.
- Premium/top trim: Premium is the best choice if you want the nicer interior presentation, including higher-quality materials, contrast stitching, and the aluminum carbon-pattern trim.
The safety package is broad across the lineup, but the lane-keeping assist system can detract from driving enjoyment, and you can shut it off if you prefer.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Ford Mustang?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,052 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,233.98, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $22,181 sits slightly below last year's $23,409.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy at a better entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend more heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment than on broad market momentum alone. Well-kept examples with desirable features should hold up better than rougher cars or heavily modified ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.61/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Ford Mustang safe?
The 2018 Mustang earns an Acceptable rating from IIHS for small-overlap frontal-impact protection and Good ratings in other crash-test assessments. It also earns a five-star rating for rollover resistance from NHTSA.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford’s driver-assistance suite includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, driver monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alerts. The system is calibrated for performance driving, but the lane-keeping assist can be intrusive, so you may want to test it before you buy.
Should I buy a 2018 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.61/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 update brings meaningful mechanical, technology, and safety improvements, including a more sophisticated feel and a broader set of driver-assistance features.
The bottom line: If you want a Mustang that feels more polished than older versions and still delivers strong performance, the 2018 is the one to target. If your priority is simply the lowest possible purchase price, you can also compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than the newest badge alone.
