CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Ford Explorer

Summary
With 245 currently listed for sale near San Bernardino, CA and an average price of $15,881, 22.9% of 2018 Ford Explorers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Ford Explorer 4.74 / 5 stars.
78.4% of 2018 Explorer models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Ford Explorer stands out as a roomy, family-oriented midsize SUV with a strong emphasis on comfort and everyday usability. It offers seating for up to seven passengers, and many buyers choose the six-passenger layout with second-row captain’s chairs. The cabin also brings a useful mix of convenience and technology, including push-button start, keyless entry, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a 13.2-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and two USB ports. Higher-spec models add features such as panoramic twin-panel moonroofs and Bang & Olufsen sound systems.
It also has a more engaging driving character than many shoppers might expect from a three-row SUV. The Explorer’s rear-wheel-drive bias helps handling, and the available 300-horsepower 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder is described as surprisingly adept. For buyers who want more muscle, the optional 3.0L EcoBoost V6 develops 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, and the Explorer is presented as genuinely fun to drive. The available hybrid was also a notable strength, combining 318 horsepower with a combined 27 mpg, which is excellent for this class.
At the same time, the 2018 Explorer is not without compromises. The source notes that the Explorer doesn’t feel as premium inside as its price suggests, and some competitors do better on fuel economy, off-road ability, or interior and cargo space. Owner feedback also points to a comfortable ride and strong performance, while mentioning pricing and long-trip comfort as possible drawbacks. That mix of space, available power, and broad feature content makes the 2018 Ford Explorer appealing, but it is best understood as a capable all-rounder rather than the clear leader in every area.

Love this car!!! I feel like I'm in a tank! So safe and enjoying all the added features of this car. Only complaint would be gas mileage, but feeling safe on the roads is way more important. Had Jeeps in the past, this blows them out of the water.

| Year-Round Low | $15,641.48 |
| Year-Round High | $17,353.99 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,355 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.85% |

There are 4,784 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing prices and trims.
If you find a listing below $15,641.48, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Ford Explorer a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Ford Explorer earns a 4.74/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Drivers consistently praise the spacious interior, comfortable ride, and strong performance. Many also like the available heated seats and sunroof, which add to the SUV’s everyday appeal. For you, that makes it a practical fit if you want a roomy, family-oriented SUV with a more premium feel and useful passenger and cargo space.
With 30.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful number of opportunities to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.74/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with repeated praise for the SUV’s comfortable ride and strong performance. That kind of positive long-term sentiment matters because it usually reflects a vehicle people feel confident living with day to day.
For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about whether the model is appealing and more about finding one that has been maintained well and hasn’t accumulated avoidable wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Ford Explorer?
At 66.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from ones with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on overall condition, maintenance evidence, and signs of past repairs rather than relying on photos alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Ford Explorer?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,784 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.85% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,641.48, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $15,645 sits slightly below last year's $17,355.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on how well your vehicle is presented, maintained, and documented. Clean history and strong condition should matter more when you eventually go to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.74/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.85% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.74/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
The 2018 is a strong choice if you want a roomy, comfortable, family-friendly SUV and you can verify condition carefully before buying. If your priority is maximizing value, the 2018 makes sense when you find a clean, well-priced example. If you are especially price-sensitive, it is worth comparing nearby model years and focusing on the best-maintained listing rather than the cheapest one.
