CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Ford Explorer

Summary
With 4,753 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,639, 30.8% of 2018 Ford Explorers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Ford Explorer 4.74 / 5 stars.
66.6% of 2018 Explorer models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Ford Explorer stands out as a roomy, family-oriented midsize SUV with a strong emphasis on comfort and everyday usability. It offers seating for up to seven passengers, and many buyers choose the six-passenger layout with second-row captain’s chairs. The cabin also brings a useful mix of convenience and technology, including push-button start, keyless entry, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a 13.2-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and two USB ports. Higher-spec models add features such as panoramic twin-panel moonroofs and Bang & Olufsen sound systems.
It also has a more engaging driving character than many shoppers might expect from a three-row SUV. The Explorer’s rear-wheel-drive bias helps handling, and the available 300-horsepower 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder is described as surprisingly adept. For buyers who want more muscle, the optional 3.0L EcoBoost V6 develops 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, and the Explorer is presented as genuinely fun to drive. The available hybrid was also a notable strength, combining 318 horsepower with a combined 27 mpg, which is excellent for this class.
At the same time, the 2018 Explorer is not without compromises. The source notes that the Explorer doesn’t feel as premium inside as its price suggests, and some competitors do better on fuel economy, off-road ability, or interior and cargo space. Owner feedback also points to a comfortable ride and strong performance, while mentioning pricing and long-trip comfort as possible drawbacks. That mix of space, available power, and broad feature content makes the 2018 Ford Explorer appealing, but it is best understood as a capable all-rounder rather than the clear leader in every area.

Love this car!!! I feel like I'm in a tank! So safe and enjoying all the added features of this car. Only complaint would be gas mileage, but feeling safe on the roads is way more important. Had Jeeps in the past, this blows them out of the water.

How much does the 2018 Ford Explorer cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,594 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,594 |
| Year-Round High | $17,303 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,304 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.88% |
Prices have softened 9.88% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 4,800 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2018 Ford Explorer a good car?
Yes — the 4.74/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise the spacious interior, comfortable ride, and strong performance, and many also like the extra convenience features such as heated seats and a sunroof. The Explorer’s roomy, family-oriented layout makes it a practical fit if you want a three-row SUV with broad everyday usability. With 31.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer.
Is the 2018 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.74/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback also points to a dependable ownership experience, with drivers highlighting comfort, strong performance, and a generally trouble-free feel in day-to-day use. That said, used buyers should still plan for a careful inspection, because long-term ownership risk depends heavily on how well each individual vehicle has been maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Ford Explorer?
At 67% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with accident records. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on overall condition, signs of past repairs, and whether the vehicle has been maintained consistently. Because this model is often bought for family use, it’s especially smart to check interior wear, comfort features, and how well the vehicle has held up over time.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Ford Explorer?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,800 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.88% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 67.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,594, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $15,594 sits slightly below last year's $17,304.
That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy at a better entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend more on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle is presented when you list it. Well-kept examples should hold up better than average because buyers still respond to the Explorer’s space and family-friendly appeal.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.74/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 67% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.88% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.74/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
If you want a roomy, well-liked Explorer and you’re focused on value, the 2018 is a sensible primary target because pricing has eased and owner satisfaction is strong. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than chasing the lowest sticker price alone.
