CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Chevrolet Volt

Summary
With 186 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,881, 35.5% of 2018 Chevrolet Volt listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Chevrolet Volt 4.7 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2018 Chevrolet Volt stands out as a compact plug-in hybrid that blends everyday usability with meaningful electric driving range. In this generation, it moved beyond the earlier range-extended setup and used engine torque directly through a mechanical connection, helping deliver an EPA-estimated all-electric range of around 53 miles. It also seated five, could run on regular fuel, and came with Apple CarPlay, making it feel more modern and practical than many early electrified cars.
It was also well equipped for its class. The Volt used an 18.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, a dual-electric motor/generator, and front-wheel drive, with a 1.5-liter inline four rated at 149 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy was listed at 43/42 mpg and 106 MPGe in electric mode, while total range reached 420 miles. Standard equipment on the LT included automatic climate control, remote start, passive entry, a built-in WiFi hotspot, an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen, a rearview camera, cruise control, and Apple CarPlay, while available features included heated leather seats, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking.
For buyers, the 2018 Volt’s appeal is its mix of efficiency, technology, and flexibility. It offers strong electric-only capability for short trips, but it can still handle longer drives without the anxiety that comes with a pure EV. The tradeoffs are familiar ones: the rear seats are cramped, the cargo area is small, and the interior materials are described as cheap. Even so, it remains a compelling used choice for shoppers who want modern features and a practical plug-in hybrid setup.

The long-term appeal is strongest if you want a car you can count on for short electric trips and longer drives without much drama.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Chevrolet Volt?
At 70.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of the battery-related systems, charging behavior, and overall condition, since those are central to the Volt’s value proposition. It also makes sense to focus on wear items and interior condition, because a well-kept example is more likely to deliver the efficiency and convenience you want.

- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.94% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,878, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Chevrolet Volt's resale value?
The current average of $13,630 sits slightly below last year's $14,188.
That kind of price movement suggests the Volt has softened a bit in the market, which can matter if you're planning to sell later. A lower current average can make it easier for you to buy in, but it also means future resale gains may be limited unless you choose a particularly clean, well-equipped example. Strong condition and documented maintenance should help you stand out when it's time to list the car again.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Chevrolet Volt or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.94% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
The 2018 Volt is a strong choice if you want a used plug-in hybrid with proven owner satisfaction, useful electric range, and a market that still offers some deal opportunities. If your priority is finding the cleanest possible example at the lowest price, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the best-maintained listing rather than the model year alone.
