What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Chevrolet Cruze?

At 55.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a diesel example. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the car’s maintenance history matches its mileage and use. Because this model year has a meaningful share of accident history in the market, a clean, well-documented example is worth extra attention.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LT Diesel Hatchback looks like a conventional Cruze from the outside, but it adds a diesel drivetrain, a small TD badge, and a more upscale standard equipment set. It also comes with the Convenience Package, including a power driver’s seat, keyless entry and ignition, and remote start, which helps explain its higher price.
• Powertrain: The diesel setup pairs a 1.6-liter turbodiesel engine with a 9-speed automatic. It delivers 240 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm and 137 hp at 3,750 rpm, with combined fuel economy estimated at 35 mpg and real-world results that can run higher.
• Safety package: Teen Driver is standard, and it lets owners set speed and distance limits for a secondary driver while sending app-delivered reports and notifications. The car also includes full-length side curtain, knee, and front and rear side airbags.
• Infotainment: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the Chevy MyLink system is paired with them. The tech setup also includes Teen Driver support for monitoring secondary drivers.
• Fuel efficiency: The diesel powertrain is rated at 35 mpg combined, with test results that averaged at least 40 mpg and topped 50 mpg on a highway loop.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Chevrolet Cruze?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on a strong listing.

• Deal availability: 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,399 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.46% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 55.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,840, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze's resale value?

The current average of $9,854 sits slightly below last year's $10,765.

That price movement suggests the Cruze has softened enough to give used buyers some leverage, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later. The diesel’s niche appeal can help it attract the right shopper, but condition and documentation will matter a lot when you eventually resell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze safe?

The 2018 Chevrolet Cruze earns five-star overall and frontal crash ratings from NHTSA, along with four-star ratings in side crash and rollover tests.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Teen Driver is standard, giving you tools to set speed and distance limits for a secondary driver and receive reports and notifications when those limits are exceeded. The car also includes full-length side curtain, knee, and front and rear side airbags. One caveat is that the rollover and side crash results are lower than the frontal and overall ratings, so safety-minded shoppers should pay close attention to the car’s condition and equipment.

Should I buy a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.46% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Chevrolet’s diesel-focused approach gives this year a distinctive niche for efficiency-minded shoppers.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $9,263, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $9,854 average.
• It adds a sloping rear hatch for more utility and broader appeal.

The bottom line: If you want the more distinctive and efficiency-focused choice, the 2018 is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2017 is the smarter budget play, especially if you value hatchback utility over the diesel-specific appeal.
