2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV test drive
overall
Small changes make the best deal in the electric vehicle world even better.
When it was originally unveiled with a 238-mile range, the Chevrolet Bolt EV eliminated most would-be EV owners' greatest concern: range anxiety. So how has Chevrolet improved its electric car? Well, some extendable sun visors to help with heat and a programmable heated steering wheel to combat cold are a good start.

I honestly cannot read about this car anymore than I have. First of all as someone who is 64, it has been a struggle and a half to find an EV that I can comfortably drive and fit into. Both are accomplished here, the fact that this car makes driving fun again. It has all the bells and whistles that one could ever want in a vehicle, well also not trying to gouge me for every nickel and dime that I have. I have never been this happy in a car in as long as I can remember. If you are budget conscious, a little bit bougie, or just want to show off while being on a budget. This car is for you just make sure you get the forward collision, the parking assist, and deluxe cruise control. If you get one with a replaced battery it goes 297 mile range. Yay!

The Bolt is an excellent city run-around vehicle. Quick and nimble. Very versatile. Anyone thinking about an EV a Bolt is a good intro. A note on the battery issue you may have heard about: the recall Chevrolet issued took care of it. Most cars should have already had the recall performed. The main traction battery gets replaced with a brand new battery with a brand new 8 year warranty! The new battery is actually a little bigger than the original so you get the benefit of slightly more range. But range will never be an issue; this car has plenty. You wont miss not ever having to visit a gas station again.

Is the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV a good car?
Yes — the 4.83/5 user rating and 7.67/10 expert rating point to a strong overall showing. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Safety. Owners consistently praise its fun driving experience, responsiveness, smooth ride, and city-friendly versatility, while the overview frames it as an EV that made range anxiety far less intimidating. With 29.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have a decent chance of finding a competitive example.
Is the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Reviewers repeatedly describe it as practical, dependable, and a car they can count on, especially for everyday use and city driving. The expert evaluation also emphasizes its smooth, easygoing electric power delivery and regenerative braking, which support a low-stress ownership experience. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the powertrain concept and more about finding a well-kept example with healthy battery performance and consistent charging habits.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82% — always verify the vehicle history report. You should still prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, because condition matters more than mileage alone on an EV. Focus on battery health, charging behavior, and whether the car has been used mostly for home charging or frequent DC fast charging.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LT starts with keyless ignition and entry, xenon headlights with LED running lights, automatic climate control, 17-inch alloys, cloth upholstery, and a 10.2-inch touchscreen with standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Premier adds leather seats, heated rear seats, ambient interior lighting, roof rails, a top-down camera system, and an upgraded rear-view mirror with embedded camera display. The base trim leaves some driver-assistance features optional, while the Premier is the only trim that can get the more advanced safety package.
- Powertrain: Every Bolt EV uses a single electric motor with front-wheel drive and 60kWh of batteries under the floor. Output is equivalent to 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, and the car reaches 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. The instant torque delivery and regenerative braking are key parts of the driving experience.
- Safety package: The available driver-assistance suite includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and automatic high-beams. Some of those features are optional on the LT, and the more advanced package is reserved for the Premier.
- Infotainment: The Bolt EV uses a 10.2-inch touchscreen with Chevy MyLink, standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, two USB ports, 4G LTE, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Wireless smartphone charging is available on the Premier with the Infotainment package, and over-the-air capability is not mentioned.
- Range & charging: The Bolt EV was originally unveiled with 238 miles of range. DC fast charging can add 90 miles of range every 30 minutes, and a depleted battery can be recharged in just over an hour. A 220-volt outlet can add 25 miles an hour, while a standard 110-volt outlet is much slower.
- Battery health: On a used EV, you should check battery state-of-health, ask how the car was typically charged, and confirm whether the battery still has meaningful warranty coverage left. Home charging is generally easier on ownership routines, while frequent DC fast charging can be worth asking about during inspection and history review.
Which 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV trim should I buy?
The 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV is offered in 2 trim levels: LT and Premier.
Here's the short version:
- LT: This is the value play if you want the Bolt EV’s core strengths without paying for extras. You still get the 10.2-inch touchscreen, standard smartphone integration, and the same electric powertrain, but some safety and convenience features remain optional.
- Premier: This is the better choice if you want the most complete Bolt EV experience. It adds leather seating, heated rear seats, ambient lighting, a top-down camera system, and access to the more advanced safety package, making it the best-equipped version.
The safety package is split by trim, with the more advanced driver-assistance features reserved for the Premier.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV?
This looks like a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on strong listings.
- Deal availability: 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 89 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 82.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,540.96, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV safe?
With a 5-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick nod from IIHS, the Bolt EV has a strong safety profile. It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts. The available driver-assistance suite includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and automatic high-beams. Some of those features are optional on the LT, and the more advanced package is limited to the Premier. The main caveat is that the most comprehensive safety tech is not standard on the base trim.
Should I buy a 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds thoughtful updates like extendable sun visors and a programmable heated steering wheel.
Consider the 2017 if:
- It delivers 238 miles of range and feels especially ordinary as a daily driver.
The bottom line: The 2018 is the better all-around pick if you want the Bolt EV’s strong range, improved everyday comfort, and solid owner satisfaction. If you’re shopping mainly on price, the 2017 can still make sense because it delivers the same core range story and may cost less.
