CarGurus Analysis: 2018 BMW X5

Summary
With 1,731 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,656, 34.3% of 2018 BMW X5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 BMW X5 4.35 / 5 stars.
69.4% of 2018 X5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 BMW X5 stands out as a luxury midsize SUV that still puts driving feel at the center of the experience. By this generation, BMW had moved the X5 toward a cleaner, more refined design while keeping the qualities owners and critics liked about it, and the result was an SUV that remained rewarding to drive. It also offered a broad range of powertrains, including turbocharged inline six-cylinder engines, turbo V8s, and a turbocharged diesel, along with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
For buyers, the 2018 model year is appealing because it sits near the end of a generation that had already gained many of its desirable features. The third-generation X5 offered BMW’s iDrive infotainment technology and many modern safety features, and the luxurious interior included a small, optional third-row seat. Starting with the 2017 model year, it also added iDrive 6.0 with touchscreen functionality, wireless smartphone charging, and Wi-Fi hotspot access. That combination of comfort, technology, and versatility helps explain why the X5 has long been a popular used luxury SUV.
There are tradeoffs, though. The third-generation X5 was not especially trouble-free compared with some rivals, and major maintenance or repairs can be expensive. It also was not the most fuel-efficient choice, especially in V8 form. Even so, a well-maintained 2018 BMW X5 can be a strong pick for shoppers who want a premium SUV with a polished cabin and a more engaging driving character than many competitors.

I think this car is way too overpriced for the features and the condition. Considering it has almost 90k miles, and with the base packaging, this should be somewhere around 16-18k at the dealership assuming no technical or mechanical issues observed with the car. Almost 21k is crazy. The car does not have: M package Premium plus package, whatever that was called that gives you multi controllable seats, shade screens on the back 360 camera and all the other good stuff. The car seemed factory base model, with no features. So 21k is way too expensive.

Is the 2018 BMW X5 a good car?
Generally — the 4.35/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise the comfort, smooth driving experience, and blend of luxury and utility, while also highlighting the sporty handling and performance that make this SUV feel more engaging than many rivals. You also get a useful mix of technology and everyday practicality, which fits well if you want a luxury midsize SUV that can handle commuting, family duty, and longer trips. With 34.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 BMW X5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.35/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that many drivers find dependable in day-to-day use, with comfort and utility helping it feel like a trustworthy long-term companion. At the same time, used luxury ownership can bring higher maintenance exposure, so your best protection is a well-documented service history and a careful pre-purchase inspection.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 BMW X5?
At 69.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was minor or structural. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the body, suspension, electronics, and interior condition, since those areas can reveal how well the SUV was maintained. Because this is a used luxury model, you should also pay close attention to service records and signs of deferred maintenance.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 BMW X5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,740 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.57% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,542.59, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 BMW X5's resale value?
The current average of $17,643 sits slightly below last year's $20,179.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and maintenance history rather than just the badge alone. Well-kept examples should hold up better than neglected ones, especially in a segment where buyers expect strong presentation and documented care.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.35/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 BMW X5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.57% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.35/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $25,199, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $17,643 average.
- It brings a redesigned interior with updated tech and more room.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2018 is the stronger starting point because pricing has softened and inventory is broad enough to shop selectively. If you want the newer redesign and are willing to pay a much higher entry price, the 2019 is the better alternative; price-sensitive buyers should stay focused on the 2018.
