How much does the 2018 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 10.93% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,381 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2018 BMW 5 Series a good car?

Yes — the 2018 BMW 5 Series earns a 4.9/5 user rating and an 8.3/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, powerful performance, and luxurious features. The model also stands out for its comfort and handling, and the overview points you toward a refined, comfort-first midsize luxury sedan with an efficiency-minded plug-in hybrid option in the 530e.

With 35.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2018 BMW 5 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a reliable, trouble-free ownership experience for many shoppers, while also noting some concerns about potential reliability issues. The expert evaluation also describes the 530e as planted and solid, which supports the sense that it can be a dependable daily driver when maintained properly.

The cost-effectiveness discussion also highlights that you can get into this model for less than 50 grand new, which helps offset ownership concerns if you buy carefully and keep maintenance up to date.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a few reported reliability concerns make a thorough pre-purchase inspection especially worthwhile.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 BMW 5 Series?

At 58.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a hands-on inspection of bodywork, panel alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this model can be optioned heavily, it also makes sense to confirm that the features you care about are actually present and functioning as advertised. Focus on overall condition first, then compare equipment and mileage against the asking price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 530e differs only slightly from the gasoline-powered 5 Series, with eDrive badging, a charging port, ambient lighting in BMW blue, and a reduced trunk capacity of 15 cubic feet instead of 19. It also has a flat cargo floor and a reduced fuel tank, so you should make sure the plug-in hybrid packaging still fits your needs.
• Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid setup adds electric torque and lets the car feel just as quick as the conventional version, while also delivering strong efficiency. It uses a traditional automatic, so it still shifts like a regular car.
• Safety package: The car can be equipped with driver-assistance packages that add blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and related features. Some of those systems are optional rather than standard, so verify exactly what the car has.
• Infotainment: The iDrive interface includes additional eDrive pages, and the car can be equipped with Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and enhanced connectivity through extra USB and Bluetooth connections.
• Fuel efficiency: The plug-in hybrid is rated at 72 MPGe when the batteries are topped off and 29 mpg once the battery charge is depleted.

Which 2018 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2018 BMW 5 Series is offered in 1 trim level: 530e.

Here's the short version:

The 530e is the trim to focus on if you want the most efficiency-minded version of the 5 Series and the lowest-priced entry into the lineup. It adds the plug-in hybrid drivetrain, strong electric torque, and the best cost-effectiveness score in the group, making it the best-value choice for shoppers who care about frugality without giving up luxury-car feel.

The safety-package note to keep in mind is that several desirable driver-assistance features are optional, so you should verify the equipment list carefully before you buy.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 BMW 5 Series?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,381 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.93% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,105, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $18,105 sits slightly below last year's $20,326.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price, you reduce the risk of taking a bigger depreciation hit later. The plug-in hybrid angle may help the car stand out with efficiency-minded shoppers, but condition and equipment will still matter a lot when it comes time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2018 BMW 5 Series earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety content also notes that the optional M Sport Brakes help it achieve a 124-foot stopping distance, which matters when you’re dealing with the added weight of the plug-in hybrid system. Driver-assistance features can be added through optional packages, so you should confirm whether the car you’re considering includes the safety tech you want.

Should I buy a 2018 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.93% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2018 adds the 530e plug-in hybrid, giving you a frugality-focused option that stands out in the lineup.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $17,030, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $18,105 average.
• It is a thoroughly redesigned midsize luxury sedan with a fresh chassis, new engines, and updated technology.

The bottom line: If you want the better all-around shopping opportunity, the 2018 is the stronger pick because it combines a lower average price, solid deal availability, and the unique 530e hybrid option. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2017 is the more budget-friendly alternative and still brings the redesigned 5 Series formula.

How does the 2018 BMW 5 Series compare to the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

Our experts score the 2018 BMW 5 Series 8.3/10 and the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 8/10.

The BMW gives you the stronger expert score, a lower average used price, and a much more efficiency-focused powertrain in the 530e. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has a slightly higher share of good and great deals and a slightly higher accident-free share, but it costs more on average. If you want the better value and the more distinctive hybrid angle, the BMW is the more compelling buy.
