Owners consistently praise its luxurious features, distinct style, smooth handling, and comfort, and they also describe it as a great value in its class. That lines up with the S90’s role as Volvo’s flagship sedan, aimed at you if you want a midsize luxury car that feels upscale and different from the usual choices. What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volvo S90?

At 68% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and any signs of prior repair quality. Because this sedan is positioned as a luxury car with advanced tech and safety systems, you’ll also want to confirm that the electronics, driver-assistance features, and infotainment all work as intended. Pay close attention to comfort-related condition items too, since owner feedback suggests interior space and day-to-day livability matter a lot in this model.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S90’s cabin is described as richly finished, with supple leather, matte-finish walnut wood, polished aluminum trim, beveled metal accents, and ambient lighting. The test car was heavily optioned, so you should expect meaningful feature differences between lower and higher-spec examples.
• Powertrain: The S90 T6 uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with turbocharging and supercharging, making 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. It uses an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, and the review notes strong straight-line performance along with a claimed 5.7-second 0-60 mph time.
• Safety package: Every S90 comes standard with Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driving system, and free emergency crash-notification service for 10 years. The review also notes that the system did not consistently assist the driver in every situation, so you should test its behavior carefully.
• Infotainment: The Sensus system uses a vertically oriented touchscreen that is easy to understand but can be distracting while driving. The review also mentions digital instrumentation with four display themes and a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The test loop returned 22.3 mpg, and the car returned 24.2 mpg over a full week of driving.

Which 2017 Volvo S90 trim should I buy?

The 2017 Volvo S90 is offered in 1 trim level: T6.

Here's the short version:

The T6 is the one to focus on because it’s the trim described in the review, and it brings the S90’s core appeal together: strong power, standard all-wheel drive, and the upscale cabin that defines the car. It suits you best if you want the full flagship-sedan experience and value style, comfort, and performance more than bargain-basement pricing.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that every S90 comes standard with Pilot Assist, but the review says it was not consistently dependable in real-world use.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volvo S90?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 175 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.16% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 68.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $15,725, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Volvo S90's resale value?

The current average of $15,725 sits slightly below last year's $16,407.

That kind of price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may temper near-term resale upside if you plan to sell soon. If you buy well now, you may have less depreciation pressure than someone who paid closer to last year’s average. The key for future resale will be condition, mileage, and whether the car’s luxury features and safety systems remain in strong working order.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Volvo S90 safe?

The 2017 Volvo S90 receives the highest possible ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, with the exception of headlight performance, which is deemed Marginal.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Every S90 comes standard with Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driving system, and free emergency crash-notification service for 10 years. The review also notes that Pilot Assist did not consistently assist the driver in every situation, so you should not assume it will replace attentive driving. The Marginal headlight result is the main safety caveat to keep in mind.

Should I buy a 2017 Volvo S90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.16% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 stands out for its flagship-sedan styling, strong safety reputation, and standard Pilot Assist.

The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive version of the S90’s design, safety focus, and luxury feel, the 2017 is the right place to start. If you’re shopping mainly on price, you should still compare nearby model years, but the 2017 already shows a softer market and enough inventory to make it worth targeting a well-kept example.
